إن أعرضت دنياك عنك بوجهها

يا لاهيا عن غرامي

تحمر وجنته مهما مررت به

هل جسوم يوم النوى ودعوها
Is grief their lot when lovers part
أشاقك سلع أم هفت بك ذكراه

إذا الدهماء أجراها
When the darkness spreads its veil
وظبي تجرد عن قمصه
A young man took off his shirt
إن تعتب الخل في ذنب جزاك قلى
If you blame my mistakes, little as they may be,
إن تذم الحسود ذمك جهرا
If the envious blame you openly
العشق همة نفس
Love is an aspiration of the soul
ما تضم الجيوب والأطواق
What pockets and belts do not contain,
صدعت أكبادي صدع الزجاج
You have shattered my livers like glass,
سائلي عن توحشي وهو أنسي
Ask me about my solitude, yet it is my companion
ودونكها يا روضة الجود والندى
With you lies its fragrance, O garden of generosity and dew
شهدت لحسنك آية لا تنكر
A sign of your beauty is witnessed, one cannot deny
وغانية تغنينا فتغني
And a songstress sings to us, so she sings
سبع لي اليوم أيا
Seven years today, O my beloved
شقائق النعمان والباقلا
The anemones and ranunculus
سبع لي اليوم أيا بغيتي لي
Seven days have passed, O my beloved,
ومجدب الخصر غض الردف ناعمه
With a slender waist and soft hips
من عذيري من عذول
Who can blame my love
إليك صحيفة شكوى محب
To you a letter of complaint from a lover
يبدي خيالا منك زار خياله
He shows a dream of you that his dream visited
أهيل ودي نداء صب
My love calls out at dawn
كتبت وشوقي يملي أسى
I wrote while my longing dictated sadness,
وذي تمائم تبري من وساوسه
With talismans that dispel his doubts,
كنت أظن البعاد يسلي

لله حمام حكتني حاله
For God I have a dove that told me its condition:
أعرض عن العالم مسترضيا
Turn away from the world appeased
إن شئت عزا فاغش أبواب
If you desire glory, besiege the doors
ملاك الأمر تقوى الله فاجعل
The command's angel is piety of God, so make
إذا ما دعتك النفس يوما لريبة
If ever your soul whispers you towards sin
دن بالتواضع والإخبات محتسبا
Be humble and meek, hoping for reward,
ما أبقت الدنيا على ناسك
The world did not abide pious folk,
عدوك داره ما اسطعت حتى
Your enemy, his house did not shine
الزم مكانك فالتغرب ذلة
Stay in your place, for expatriation is humiliation
سافر تنل بالأسفار كل علا
Travel, that you may gain all heights,
أحرى ثيابك أن تجمله
The most fitting of your garments to adorn it
يا مجيب المضطر عند الدعاء
O You who answers the distressed when he prays
استفز الأنام مرآه
His mirror provoked people
هبت من النوم عين البهار
The eye of spring has awoken from sleep
أدر الكؤوسا على الطرب
Turn the cups to joy
خط السنا ذهبا في اللازوردي
The snā traced gold in the lapis lazuli;
يا رياضا أهدى لأنفي بهارا
O beautiful gardens that bring joy to my soul
يا رب أسود وافانا وفي يده
O Lord, a black night has befallen us, and in its hand
ظن أني أفقت من أشواقي
He thought I had awoken from my longing,
سبع لي اليوم أيا بغيتي لم
Seven days for me today, O my beloved
رمدت لواحظه فقال طبيبه
His eyelids fluttered and his doctor said
سقنيها بالكبير
Give it to me in a large cup
واد دموع العاشقين تمده
A valley where lovers' tears flow
وخرساء إلا زمان الربيع
Silent except in springtime
جاء الشتاء بغيمه متحجبا
Winter came veiled in its clouds
عامل زمانك إن النقص شيمته
Treat your time well, for shortcoming is its trait
حيا الربيع بنرجس وبهار
Spring greeted with narcissus and blossoms
يا من تعجب في اصطبار
O you who are surprised at the patience of his lovers about him, and confused
لله أربعة من الدهر
Four from time are for God
تطريز خديك بالريحان والراح
The embroidery of your cheeks with basil and breeze
وعاذلة في تركي العشق والصبا
And a reproacher for leaving love and youth
بدت فشدت في مساق حسن
She appeared, so she allured, in a beautiful gait,
غمض عن العوراء تأمن عارها
Turn a blind eye to the blemished one, to spare her shame
سبع لي اليوم أيا بغيتي لم يبد لي
Seven days for me today, O my beloved
ابذل المال لا تبال ببذله
Spend your wealth, do not care for its loss
خذوا بقية نفسي وامحقوا الأثرا
Take the rest of my soul and wipe away all trace
قدك في ملبسك الوردي
Your stature in your pink dress -
غيم سما أم دخان ند
Is it a cloud of the sky or smoke of fire
لله سر جمال أنت معناه
God has a secret of beauty, you are its meaning
أجل عينيك في وشي تعاين
Lift up your eyes in wonder to see
كن كمثل الباز حالا
Be like the falcon now
بغنج تلك الأعين النجل
With the charm of those languid eyes
يا من غدا ينفق العمر الثمين بلا
O you who spends the precious life in vain
إلى كم يناديك داعي الوتر
To how long is the caller of the lute calling you?
سبع لي اليوم أيا بغيتي لميبد
Seven days for me today, O my beloved
سل بذي الضال والسمر
Ask the one with loss and vigil
بحق فضل الرسول سولي
By the right of the Messenger's grace, comfort me
يامن يغيث الورى من بعد ما قنطوا
O You who brings relief to mankind after they despair
يا من عرا قلبه انكسار
O you whose heart is broken with anguish
إذا وجدت فجد للناس قاطبة
If you find, be generous to all people
شقت على الأرض السماء جيوبها
The sky has split open its folds upon the earth,
أنا بين الحياة والموت وقف
I stand between life and death, a standstill
قل يا غزال من خط واوين
Say, O gazelle, who designed the two crescent moons
أقمت في الحب شاهدين
I have established in love two witnesses:
ما زهرة الدنيا سوى زهرة
The blossoms of this world are nothing but flowers
من عاذر المشتاق من عاذل
Who can blame the lover for his longing
في طاعة النديم
In obeying the critic
يا راكب الفلك والأفلاك تهواه
O rider of ships and orbits that entice you,
لله خزية الجلباب صونها
God's maiden the cloak did guard her
دع التأنق في لبس الثياب وكن
Abandon self-adornment in your attire, and don
يا ليلة قد كساها النور سربالا
O night clothed in light like a flowing robe
في راحتيك حياة الروح والبدن
In your hands lie the life of my soul and body
دماء فوق خدك أم خلوق
Blood upon your cheek or a beauty mark?
إذا بدا الأحسن فوق الحصان
When the best appears atop the steed
ألا خير ما للمرء عقل يزينه
Behold, the best a man can have is reason to adorn him,
سل نفحة الخيري في غسق الدجى
Ask the breath of benevolence in the dusk of gloom
إذا ما دعتك دواعي الهوى
When passion's call doth bid thee stray
ألا هل درى من بات غير مؤرق
Does he not know that I spent the night sleepless
مرآك النضير علا وجلا
Your radiant face has risen, resplendent,
يا بدر تم تسامي الطرف عن أفق
O full moon that rises above the horizon from my glance,
أيامنا بالحمى ما كان أحلاك

قاتل عداك وضاربهم بمكرمة
Kill your enemies with nobility
أقول وعين الدمع نصب عيوننا
I say, and tears of sorrow are flooding our eyes,
يا غاديا في حرصه رائحا
O you who go in pursuit of desire, rushing
ومستوجب الرعي عند الكرام
He who deserves the pasture by the generous
أعطر بخيرينا نسيما
Perfume the breeze with our goodness
ووردية الجلباب أعجبها الورد
The one in the striped robe was entranced by the rose
يا من حصلت على الكمال بما رأت
O you who gained perfection from what
رميته بوردة مطرفا

وصفراء قد سويت صعدة
أودى بقلبك صدع ليس يلتئم
من عذيري من تجني شادن
ما بين نجد وتلعة العلم
أقبل العيد فابتدرت مهلا
قد أرخيت حجب الظلام
كم قتيل من عذرة وطعين
أسراة الحي بي منكم رشي
كل شيء ولا قطيعة بين
باكر إلى رشف الثغر والكاس
ياعرب كاظمة أفيكم أظلم
مجال لطفك بين النفس والنفس
أدر كؤوس الرضا نارا على علم
الدهر يحكم بيننا يا ظالمه
أوفى كما زار الخيال الطارق
تهب نسيمات الصبا من ربا نجد
ما بين فاتر طرفها وجفوني
أحسنت أحسنت أم الحسن
سبع لي اليوم أيا بغيتي يبد
هذي الحدوج فأين عفر ظبائها
الله يكفي عاذلي ورقيبها
أهلا بنور بهار قد حبتك به
هلم إلى الرياض فقد تردت
بدر تم بأفق قلبي تجلى

من لم يشاهد موقفا لفراق
لا زلت يا فخر الملوك مؤثلا
