في طاعة النديم

1. In obeying the critic
And in the passion of love

١. في طاعَةِ النَّديمِ
وَفِي هَوى الحِسَانْ

2. I disobeyed every chider
And obeyed with infatuation

٢. عَصَيْتُ كُلَّ عاذِلْ
ودِنْتُ بافْتِتانْ

3. As for me, I have no escape
From passion

٣. أمَّا أنا فَما لي
عَنِ الهَوى مَحِيْصْ

4. I am infatuated with a gazelle
Difficult to please and eager

٤. فُتِنتُ في غَزالِ
صَعْب الرِّضى حَريصْ

5. I remained scheming
In his grasp a shirt

٥. ظَلْتُ عَلى احْتِيالي
في كفِّهِ قَنِيصْ

6. With a beautiful appearance
Above embroidered clothes

٦. ذُو مَنْظرٍ وَسِيْمِ
مِن فَوقِ خُوطِ بانْ

7. Swaying in tresses
I have no control over them

٧. يَخْتالُ في غَلائِلْ
مالي بِها يَدانْ

8. O He who is sworn by
The injustice of this lad

٨. يا مَنْ لِمُسْتهامِ
مِنْ جَوْرِ ذا الغُلامْ

9. Who robs me of my sleep
And makes me sick

٩. يَغْتالُني مَنامي
يَسُومُني سَقامْ

10. He has corrupted people
With every kind of passion

١٠. قَدْ عاثَ في الأنامِ
بأضْرُبِ الغَرامْ

11. More unjust than Sodom
Running the course of time

١١. أجْوَرُ من سَدُوم
يَعْدو مَدى الزَّمانْ

12. To the heart of an ignorant man
More obedient than a rein

١٢. على فُؤادِ ذاهِلْ
أطوَعَ مِنْ عِنانْ

13. I hung him as a gazelle
With the Romans his destination

١٣. عُلِّقْتُهُ غَزالا
للرُّومِ مُنْتَهاهْ

14. His belt enticed me
To my youthful restraint

١٤. زَنَّارهُ اسْتَمالا
حِلمي إلى صِباهْ

15. If he said something to me
I wouldn't understand his meaning

١٥. إن قالَ لي مَقالا
لَمْ أدْرِ ما عَناهْ

16. Or if I complained of my worries
He wouldn't know what's wrong

١٦. أوْ أشْتكي هُمُومي
لم يَدْرِ ما عَنانْ

17. For the heart is in the snares
Of his passionate hands

١٧. فالقَلْبُ في حَبائِلْ
أيدي هواهُ عانْ

18. I swore by the Gospels
And the sanctity of Christ

١٨. أقْسَمتُ بالأناجِلْ
وحُرْمَةِ المَسِيحْ

19. That I will not obey the chider
Regarding you or take advice

١٩. ما إنْ أُطِيْعُ عاذِلْ
فيكَ ولا نَصيحْ

20. So how much longer will you procrastinate
O one burning with agony

٢٠. فكَمْ وكَمْ تُماطِلْ
ذا لَوْعةٍ قَرِيحْ

21. My features have been distorted
With sickness from the eyes

٢١. قد امَّحَتْ رُسُومي
سُقْماً عن العَيانْ

22. So have mercy on the moaning of a weak man
Without it, nothing is clear

٢٢. فارْحَمْ أنين ناحِلْ
لولاهُ ما اسْتَبانْ

23. Tell me, how can one feel at ease
A love-struck youth

٢٣. قلْ كيفَ يَسْتريحُ
صَبٌّ متَيَّمُ

24. Whose tongue is eloquent
But love incomprehensible

٢٤. لِسانُهُ فَصيحُ
والحُبُّ أعْجَمُ

25. Is there anyone to translate?
A boy whom Rome loved

٢٥. ها حالَتِي تَلُوحُ
فَهَلْ مُتَرجِمُ

26. How can we restrain the tongue
At times I do not complain

٢٦. صُبَيّ عَشَقتْ رُومي
وِشْ نَحْفَظ اللسانْ

27. Of a lover with no translator

٢٧. السَّاعَ ما نشاكِلْ
عاشِقْ بِتُرْجُمانْ
