يا أيها الصاحب الأجل
O my dear companion
تجاهلت لما لم أر العقل نافعا
I ignored when I saw no use in reason
وهو ظليم كان باليمامه
While he was unjust, his tale remains
قالت سمعت أن حرا ضاعا
She said, "I heard that a free man got lost, in a town he arrived at, sick.
قلت أفدنيها فقال قيلا
I said, inform me, so he said briefly,
الحمد لله الذي حباني
Praise be to Allah who granted me
خرجت من بعض ضروب البصره
I went out from Basra
قلت ومن جابر قال رجل
I said, "And who is Jabir?" He said, "A man
لو قيل لي ما تمنى
A contented heart
لصحبة السلطان
The companionship of the sultan
فقالت الظبية قد
The doe said, "You have
قال نعم خرجت في جماعة
He said yes, I went out with a group
فقل لوزير نقده لكتابه
So tell the minister who criticizes his book
وكم ميت قد صار في الترب عظمه
How many dead men's bones in earth do dwell,
فيغتدي كزوجة البيطار
So she went astray like the perfumer's wife
قال نعم كانت عجوز خرفه
He said yes, she was an old demented woman
وشرهن الفاجره
The shameless wicked woman
من خاف سوء العاقبه
He who feared an evil end, did not neglect to watch
لا درع أوقى من أجل
No shield is more powerful than destiny
من لك بالصدوق
Who do you have that is truthful
فقالت الغزاله
The gazelle said:
قلت للنزلة لما
I weep for my life
صنعت بي الأيام في أرض قاشا
The days in the land of Qasha have made of me
سأدرك ما أملته من مآربي
I will attain what I have hoped for
نزوركم لا نكافيكم بجفوتكم
We visit though we cannot match your coldness,
بدت غرة النيروز باللهو والأنس
Roses bloomed at New Year's dawn
مغنى الصبا ما لي أراك دريسا
The morning breeze, why do I see you scattered?
نسيمها كالمسك في نشره
Her breeze is like musk in its diffusion
البخل ليل عاتم
Stinginess is a gloomy night
ملكتم القلب فلا تعتقوا

خذا فرص اللذات مما سمحت بها
Seize pleasures' chances from what fate allows;
غلام زيد شريكه
My friend, my comrade true
قد كنت أحرس قلبي خائفا وجلا
I was guarding my heart in fear and dread
كفاني عجزا أن أقيم على الصدى
It is enough incapacity for me to stand on the echo,
قد قلت للشيخ الرئيس
I said to the generous old man,
عذب اللمى خنث الصبا
Sweet is the tender youth
حي على خير العمل
Greet the best of deeds
دعوه ما شاء فعل
Let him call whatever he wants, and do
يقول أبو سعيد إذ رآني
Abu Sa'id said when he saw me
بي مثل ما بك يا حمام البان
I'm like you, O dove, in the branches
كقصة البعير والجمال
Like the story of the camel and the camel-calf
لا يأمن السلطانا
No ruler feels secure
أنت الذي صيرت عبدك محسنا
You are the one who made your servant benevolent,
يبيت في كفها تشمرخه
He sleeps in the palm of her hand, she moves it
قم يا غلام فهاتها
Rise, my boy, and bring it to me
بخوزستان أقوام
In Khuzestan live folk
كانا عدوين كما قيل لنا
They were two enemies, as we were told
في كفه من اليراع
In his palm a bundle of resolve
ومدلل دقت محاسن
With a delicate, refined beauty
إن المراة لا تريك
A woman does not show you
لو أن لي نفسا صبرت لما
If I had a soul that was patient for what
نزل الشيب بفودي ضيفا
Gray hair descended upon my temples as a guest
فقالت الربيبه
The wise woman said in response:
إِلا زمان صدقه
Except for the era of its truthfulness,
لا تنصبن عاملا
Do not appoint an employee
ولم أر أو في ذمة من دراهمي
And I have not seen or known in my dealings a dirham
فاجتزت في طريقي
I passed by on my path
أبعد سعيد بن المؤمل أعدل
Is there anyone more generous than Saʿīd ibn al-Muʾammal after his death?
بلد أبو الفتح اللئيم عميده
A country whose stupid leader is Abul Fath
أشد شيء كبوه
The hardest thing to tolerate
أيا ظبية الوعساء من أبرق الحمى
O doe-eyed one from the flashing fever,
ما كنت أعرف قدر أي
I knew not the worth of my days
أباح العراقي النبيذ وشربه
The Iraqi permits wine and its drinking
فقالت الجيداء
The beautiful woman said:
تقول ليس الماجد
The honorable is not
فقالت الأيكيه
The wise owl spoke
قال سمعت أن ذئبا أبصرا
I heard that a wolf saw
قال أَبو أَيوب ما هذا المثل
Abu Ayyoub said, what is this example?
كان به مستأنسا مختصا
He found comfort in him, confided in him
لكل جنب مضجع
For every side there is a resting place
ما كل قول يسمع
Not every word that's heard is wise
رحيب رواق الحلم يكفي اعتذاره
The broad courtyard of dreams is apology enough
يا بن ودي وأين مني ابن ودي
O son of my love, where is a son of my love from me
وعندي شوق دائم وصبابة
I have an everlasting longing and youthfulness
عشقت شمائله الوزارة فاغتدت
Her graceful form enamored his ministers
أي السهام بدت لنا
Which of the arrows appeared to us
ولو أنني استمددت من ماء مقلتي
If only I could draw from the water of my tears,
فصوص زمرد في كيس در
Emeralds in a pearl pouch -
أخيط بتخريقه
I sew with his shreds
هذه سنة أبناء النهى
This is the way of the children of passion
نظام العلا ما بال قلبك قد غدا
My Lord, why has your heart turned
فكان قول الصادحه
The wise woman spoke,
بأبي وجهك ما أحسنه
By your face, how beautiful it is!
وكأن السماء والنجم فيها
The sky and its stars seem
الري دار فارغه
The rain is an empty house
أرى الطريق قريبا حين أسلكه
I see the road near when I walk it
سار يبغي باللها مداحه
He went seeking praise from God
حباها بإحسان وبادر مسرعا
He endowed her with kindness and hastened
أيا من حبه نسك
Oh you who is worshipped through love
لا بارك الله في قاشان من بلد
May Allah not bless the lands of Qashan
لكن دون الخبز في داره
Yet without bread in his house
ومبلبل الأصداغ بل
My thoughts are troubled, my mind confused,
إني بحب الجبال بعت كما
With my love of mountains, as you know
أدخلني الدهر في حرامي
Time brought me into unlawful acts
لا تبِعني وقد خبرت ودادي
Do not follow me when you know my love is new
وإذا سخطت على القوافي صغتها
When I'm upset at meter, to another place I'll lead it,
أبو المعالي تاج الأئمه
Abu Al-Ma'ali, crown of imams
أنا دار دارك وهي في شرع العلا
My abode is your abode, though it lies
زعموا لي أن نفسي درة
They claimed my soul's a pearl
أما إنه لولا الهدى وجنونه
Had it not been for his passion and his madness,
اسقني يا ضرة القمر
Give me to drink, O bright moon,
كان بِمصر بدر
There was a Badr in Egypt
قالوا أقمت وما رزقت وإنما
They said you stayed put and were not provided for, yet
من جاوز القصد ظلم
Whoever exceeds the limit oppresses
ينشدني أشعاره دائبا
He recites his poems to me always
كبر على الكل إذا لم يكن
Celebrate goodness though my share be naught
لو أعطي الدست لسانا فنطق
If my hand could speak, it would say
بأبي أهيف مهضوم الحشا
By my father taken in his prime,
إنما المال منتهى أمل الخامل
Wealth is but the ultimate hope of the greedy
أبني لا تخشوا علي زماني
My sons, do not worry for me,
حدثني شيخ من الأعراب
An old Bedouin told me,
قد قلت للشيخ الرئيس الذي
I said to the chief sheikh, to whom
بغداد دار طيبها آخذ
Baghdad is a pleasant abode
لذ بنظام الحضرتين الرضا
Enjoy the system of the two dignities, Ridha
لا تجزعن لنائت
Do not despair of reproach
فقالت الحمامه
The dove said:
بغداد دار رياضها أنف
Baghdad is a land whose gardens are springs,
عادت فزارت وِسادي
You have come back, O night visitor,
وإذا البيادق في الدسوت تفرزنت
When banners in the valleys flutter and dance,
لهفي على بغداد دارِ الهوى
My longing for Baghdad, abode of passion
من مبلغ عني أطفالي
I inform my children
شر الرجال الأرعن
The worst of men is the vulgar brute,
وجهي يرق عن السؤال
My face shines from your question,
يا حبذا أهيف خطط
O how excellent are the lines of his beautiful handwriting,
كعامر بن دارم بن راشد
Like Aamir ibn Daarim ibn Raashid
قد كانت الأرزاق محبوسة
The provision was made scarce
يا عاذلي كف عن العذل
O reproacher, cease your reproach
ومجدولة جدل العنان إذا رنت
When she sings, the plaited one loosens her reins,
إذا ابتليت فاصبر
When afflicted, be patient,
لا غرو إن ملك ابن إسحاق
No wonder the son of Isaac ruled
أريد من الأيام تطبيبها نفسي
I want the days to heal my soul
كأن في رأسي ولا رأس لي
As if in my head there is no head for me
أحسين والمبعوث جدك بالهدى
O Hussein and your grandfather the Messenger with guidance
الملك راسله بأني محجر
The king sent word that I'm confined
لم يبق من نفسي سوى نفس
Naught remains of me but a faint breath
فتى يهتز للإحسان ظرفا
A youth who sways with kindness and refinement
I remembered you with basil when I smelled it
إني خلعت عذاري
I have taken off my veil
شوائل العقارب
The stings of scorpions
طرقت وسارية النجوم هجود
The stars marched on, their brightness fading,
ليس على الخير ندم
No regret comes with doing good
إِن الليالي متعبه
The nights are tiring,
يا صاحبي هات المدامة هاتها
O my friend, bring the wine, bring it
ما علي الركب إن سمحت بدمعي
No blame upon the caravan if I let my tears flow
لعل الخيال العامري إذا سرى
Perhaps imaginings, when they roam,
سرى والليل ممتد الرواق
The night stretched long, the corridors whispered on,
أنا في أصفهان في تنغيص
I am in Isfahan in distress
إذا جن ليلي واستقلت نجومه
When night falls and the stars align
أتجهل يا نظام الملك إني
Do you not know, O King's system, that I
سهام المنايا لا تطيش ولا تخطي
The arrows of death do not miss nor bypass
الجهل أروح للفتى من عقله
Ignorance is more comforting to the young man than his intellect
شر الرجال الغادر
The worst of men is the betrayer
والتاج تاج الملك
The crown is the crown of a king
جهرت وقلت للساقي أدرها
I called loudly to the cupbearer, "Pass it round!"
رأيت في النوم عرسي وهي ممسكة
In a dream I saw my teacher holding
قالوا فما ذاك فقال ذكروا
قال سمعت أن طاووسا سعى
إذا نصبت عاملا
ملك إذا لمعت بوارق بشره
يا واسطيون ثقوا أنني
بعزة أمرك دار الفلك
ما منح الإنسان من دهره
وكائن ترى من معجب لك صامت
ما لغراب البين لا كانا
لا خير في التجارب
ظن اللبيب العاقل
فدراهم وقرب
قلت ومن ذاك فقال تاجر
فقال كان للخليط راعِ
واحقن دماء الناس
فقال كان أسد بالحاجر
لا تحملن منه
وخطة السلطان
ما أطيب الكفايه
همك ما عناكا
إِن الفقير ممتحن
قولي بغير الذي أوليت من حسن
هذا كتاب حسن
وما الرمح عراص الكعوب مثقف
هل مما عراه طبيب
يحيى بن صاعد بن يحيى لم يزل
قل للوزير ولا تفزعك هيبته
لقد ساهرتني عيون الدجى
ما حط قدرهم ولا أزرى بهم
قد نزلت بي نزلة صعبة
تجنب في قرب المحل وقصده
رق النسيم وغنت الأطبار
يبلبل مني العقل صدغ مبلبل
فتاة جسمها كالماء رطب
وحر من الفتيان حلو موافق
يا دهر ما ازداد اللئيم لينقصا
ومن نكد الدنيا الدنية أنها
أنت كل الفضل والإف
سواء دنا أحياء مية أم شطوا
من يدي أهيف الشمائل بالخال
أستغفر الله من ظن أثمت به
الحقف في مئزره إن مشى
وأورق أيكي من الطير موجع
أبني الأماني اللائذات بجوده
الحزن حزني والضلوع ضلوعي
احذر جليس السوء والبس دونه
ولكن المعلم ذقن سرم
كأن غدير الماء جوشن فضة
أدرها من بنات الكرم صرفا
ويا دهر لقدر جرت
كيف السبيل إلى الغنى
ورب فتاة كرئم الصريم
هيهات هيهات كل الناس قد قلبوا
تم الكتاب وأحكمت أبوابه
قد ضعت في جي لدى عصبة
تريدون مني أن تسيؤوا وتبخلوا
العذر في تركي عيادة سيدي
كم ليلة بت مطويا على حرق
لا تعذلوا الكافي على فعله
من عادة الدنيا الدنيه
