كان به مستأنسا مختصا

1. He found comfort in him, confided in him
None could find fault or defect in him

١. كان بِه مُستَأنساً مُختَصا
لا يَجد العائب فيهِ نَقصا

2. Yet the blessed man is envied for
What he attained of status when exalted

٢. وَصاحب النعمة مَحسود عَلى
ما نالَهُ مِن العُلا إِذا عَلا

3. So they whispered in the hearing of the eagle
Treachery about the eagle's fledgling

٣. فَطرحوا في مَسمَع العقاب
خِيانَة عَن وَلَد الغراب

4. Saying he had corrupted some of the sanctuary
Yet he was not among the accused

٤. فَقيل قَد أَفسَد بَعض الحرم
وَلَم يَكُن في ذاكَ بِالمُتهَم

5. So the eagle feared his terrible anger
Since the envious had gone too far in slander

٥. فَخَشي الغراب مِن نَكيره
إِذ بالغ الحاسد في تَزويره

6. And said the sultan cannot tolerate
Three deeds done by a confidant

٦. وَقالَ لا يحتمل السلطان
ثَلاثة يَفعلها خوان

7. Divulging secrets, violating the sanctuary
And criticizing the king - whoever does so is condemned

٧. إِذاعة السر وَإِفساد الحَرَم
وَالقَدح في الملك وَمَن يَفعَل يلم

8. And I truly fear his punishment
Falling dangerously under his torment

٨. وَإِنَّني أرهَب مِن عقابه
جانحة تغم من عَذابه

9. So my soul and all my family would perish
And it is wise to ransom them with bereavement

٩. فَتَذهب النفس وَكُل الأَهل
وَالحَزم أن أفديهم بِالثكل

10. An organ may be severed if diseased
And a molar extracted to cure the body

١٠. قَد يقطَع العُضو إِذا العُضو فَسَد
وَيقلَع الضرس لإصلاح الجَسَد

11. Then he stood up, poisoned his son
How many a man was reformed by what ruined him

١١. حِينئذ قامَ فسم وَلَده
كَم رَجل أَصلَحه ما أَفسَدَه

12. And brought his head saying
I will not carry what you loathe

١٢. وَجاءهُ بِرَأسه وَقالا
لَست لما تَكرهه حمالا

13. Whoever betrays his master, this is his reward
And sometimes the cure hurts the sick

١٣. مَن خانَ مَولاه فَذا جَزاؤه
وَرُبما داوى العَليل داؤُه

14. I am the enemy of all who oppose you
Just as I am loyal to all who support you

١٤. إِني عَدو كُل من عاداكا
كَذا وَلى كُل من والاكا

15. So the eagle esteemed his worth
That's how a loyal one should be

١٥. فَجَل في نَفس العِقاب قَدره
كَذا ولي كُل مَن والاكا

16. And men, know the cunning
And despicable tricks of hardships

١٦. وَلِلرِجال فَاعلمن مَكايد
وَخدع منكرة شَدائد

17. Have you not heard the tale of the peacock
When he lodged overnight in the owl's place?

١٧. أَما سَمعت خبر الطاووس
إِذ باتَ ضَيف اليَوم في الناووس

18. The owl said to him, always be like that
For in my knowledge, there is no falsehood in you

١٨. قالَت لَهُ العَنقاء أَبدِ ذالِكا
فَلَست في الأَخبار عِندي إِفكا
