1. The companionship of the sultan
Is of utmost glory
١. لصُحبة السلطان
شَرط عَظيم الشان
2. Guard your tongue
Both in private and openly
٢. الحفظ للسان
في السر وَالإِعلان
3. And have little conflict
And much kindness
٣. وَقلة الخلاف
وَكَثرة الأَلطاف
4. And patience and steadfastness
And truthfulness and consistency
٤. وَالصَّبر وَالمُلازمه
وَالصدق وَالمداومه
5. And words of agreement
And beware of discord
٥. وَالقَول بِالوِفاق
وَحذر الشقاق
6. And honesty and belief
And gentleness and a gentle companion
٦. وَالصدق وَالتصديق
وَالرفق وَالرفيق
7. And serve the lords
And humility to the chamberlain
٧. وَخدمة الأصحاب
وَالذل لِلحِجاب
8. And moderation in matters
Both far and near
٨. وَالقَصد في الأُمور
في البُعد وَالحُضور
9. For in excess
Is annoyance and bitterness
٩. فَإِن في الإِكثار
داعية الإِضجار
10. And isolation is gloomy
And death makes them anxious
١٠. وَالانقِطاع موحشُ
وَالمَوت أَن يستَوحشوا
11. Do not seek increase
And so lose favor
١١. لا تَطلُب الزِّياده
فَتحرم الإِراده
12. Do not mention
Rights over them and so suffer
١٢. لا تَذكرنَّ حَقا
عَلَيهم فَتَشقى
13. Do not overdo advice
For in it some shame
١٣. لا تفرطن في النصح
فَفيه بَعض القبح
14. Believe them if they speak
Make allowances if they stray
١٤. صَدقهم إِن قالوا
عدِّلهمُ إِن مالوا
15. Bear witness for them falsely
And mislead with lies
١٥. اشهد لَهُم بالزور
وَدل بِالغُرور
16. Do not spread their secrets
Nor mention their news
١٦. لا تفشين أَسرارَهُم
لا تذكرن أَخبارَهُم
17. Do not belittle their honor
Nor be ungrateful for their favor
١٧. لا تحقرن إِكرامهم
لا تكفرن إنعامهم
18. Do not complain of their deeds
Nor rely on their friendship
١٨. لا تَشكون أَفعالهُم
لا تأمنن ملالهم
19. Do not complain of their chamberlain
Nor overly reproach them
١٩. لا تشكون حِجابهم
لا تكثرن عِتابَهُم
20. Do not strive to please them
Nor earn their malice
٢٠. لا تَسعين عِندهم
لا توجبن حقدهم
21. Do not be overly helpful
And so cause boredom
٢١. لا تكثر الدلالا
فَتورث الملالا
22. Do not trust the boon companion
Nor wound the generous one
٢٢. لا تَأمن النديما
لا تجرح الكَريما
23. Do not be fooled by their love
Nor tricked by their nearness
٢٣. لا تغترر بِحُبهم
لا تَنخدع بِقُربهم
24. Do not be too familiar with them
Nor burden them overly
٢٤. لا تَنبَسط إليهم
لا تكثرن عَليهم
25. Beware consultation
For it is hazardous
٢٥. إِياكَ وَالمَشوره
فَإِنَّها مَحذوره
26. And if they want you for it
Do not be inclined to it
٢٦. فَإِن أَرادوك لَها
فَلا تَكُن مولها
27. Counsel them following their whims
Not checking them
٢٧. أشر عَلَيهم تابِعا
أَهواءَهُم لا رادِعا
28. You must be balanced
And avoid being patronizing
٢٨. عَلَيكَ بِالتوسط
وَاِحذر مِن التبَسط
29. Do not trust their loyalty
Nor disobey their command
٢٩. لا تَأمنن غَدرَهم
لا تَعصين أَمرهم
30. Do not cut off their thanks
Nor deny their guile
٣٠. لا تَقطَعن شُكرَهم
لا تُنكرن مَكرَهُم
31. And be to their enemies
As a sword behind them
٣١. وَكُن عَلى أَعدائهم
كَالسيف مِن وَرائهم
32. Do not speak if they are angry
Nor laugh if they jest
٣٢. لا تنطقن إِن غَضِبوا
لا تَضحَكن إِن لَعِبوا
33. Do not restrict their wealth
Nor blame their deeds
٣٣. لا تحجبن أَموالهم
وَلا تعب أَفعالَهُم
34. Beware intercession
For it is humiliation
٣٤. إِياكَ وَالشفاعَه
فَإِنَّها رقاعَه
35. Beware scheming
For position or rule
٣٥. إِياكَ وَالسعايَه
في العَزل وَالولايَه
36. Deceive them with money
And soften your words
٣٦. أخدعهم بِالمال
وَلين المَقال
37. The best matter is moderation
Loving extremes is wrong
٣٧. خَير الأُمور الوَسَط
حُب التناهي غَلَط
38. An ancient proverb
Written by the wise one
٣٨. المثل القَديم
حَرره الحَكيم
39. No bird has flown high
Except to fall as it flew
٣٩. ما طارَ طَير واِرتَفَع
إِلا كَما طارَ وَقَع
