1. Like the story of the camel and the camel-calf
And a thing may be known through a parable

2. He brought it from Syria, a she-camel
So they met a raiding party on the way

3. He did not see it because of his heedlessness
Of its matter and his preoccupation with his thoughts

ูู ุจูุนุฏููุง ููุบููุชู
ุนูู ุฃู
ุฑูุง ููุดุบูู ุจููุฑุชู
4. So the camel saw what he did not see
And said to the camel-calf, warning it

ูุจุตุฑู
ูููุงูู ููุฌู
ุงู ููููู ููุฐุฑู
5. โI see the horses coming towards us
And I am too heavy to escape
ูฅ. ุฅููู ุฃูุฑู ุงูุฎููู ุฅูููุง ุชูุจู
ููุฅูููููู ุนูู ุงูููุฌุงุฉ ู
ุซูู
6. โSo unload this off my back and mount it
And flee, go if escape is dear
ูฆ. ููุฃูู ุนูู ุธููุฑู ููุฐุง ูุงุฑูุจ
ูุงูุฌ ููุฅูู ุนุฒ ุงููุฌุงุก ูุงุฐูุจ
7. The calf said to it, remembering laziness
โIโm weary as you are heavy and honored
ูง. ูุงูู ูููู ุงูุฌู
ุงู ุฅููุงู ุชุฐูุฑ
ุถุฌุฑุช ุฅูุฐ ุฃูุชู ุซูููู ู
ููุฑ
8. โYou want me to unload the burden
Just for this, Iโm tired of the weight alreadyโ
ูจ. ุชุฑูุฏ ุฃูู ุฃุทุฑุญ ุนูููู ุงูุญู
ูุง
ูุฃุฌู ููุฐุง ููุฏ ุณุฆูู
ุช ุงูุซููุง
9. It said to it โLook at the dust cloudโ
It said โItโs the mirage in the glanceโ
ูฉ. ูุงู ููู ุงูุธุฑ ุฅููู ุงูุนุฌุงุฌ
ูุงู ููู ูุฌุฏ ูู ุงููุฌุงุฌ
10. โThat is the dust of a caravan or a regiment
Or a band fleeing from the enemy, speedingโ
ูกู . ุฐุงู ุบูุจุงุฑ ุนุงูุฉ ุฃู ูุงููู
ุฃูู ุฎูุณุฉ ุนูู ุงูุนูุฏู ุฌุงูููู
11. It said โAnd these are the forelocks of horses
Coming fast like a torrentโ
ูกูก. ูุงูู ูููุฐูู ููุงุตู ุงูุฎููู
ููุฏ ุฃูุจูููุช ู
ูุณุฑูุนูุฉ ููุงูุณูู
12. It said โMaybe there are acquaintances among them
Or a Bedouin or allied youthโ
ูกูข. ูุงูู ุนูุณู ูููู
ูููุง ู
ุนุงุฑู
ุฃูู ุนูุฑูุจู ุฃูู ููุชู ู
ุญุงูู
13. The camel said โStop the delusions
โMaybeโ does not ward off calamityโ
ูกูฃ. ูุงู ููู ุงูุจูุนูุฑ ุฎู ุงูููุณุง
ูุง ููุฏูุน ุงูุฎูุทุจ ูุนูู ููุนูุณู
14. It said โTake your luggage off me
And leave your insolenceโ
ูกูค. ูุงู ููู ุฃุฎุฐู ุฏูู ุฑุงุญุชู
ู
ูู ุซููู ูุฎู ุนูู ูููุงุญุชู
15. The camel said, laughing
โThis fool is destroyed by my plotsโ
ูกูฅ. ูุงูู ูู ุงูุจูุนูุฑ ููููู ููุถุญูู
ููุฐุง ุงูุฑูููุน ูู ููุงุฏู ูููู
16. And the horses caught up to it where it was
And it was tied up tightly from its armpits
ูกูฆ. ููุฃุฏุฑูุชู ุงูุฎููู ูู ู
ููุงูู
ููุดูุฏ ูู ุงูุฃููุซู ู
ูู ุฃูุดุทุงูู
17. And so is the nature of the hunter
He does not accept the truth for plotting
ูกูง. ูููููุฐุง ุฎููููุฉ ุงูุตูููุงุฏ
ูุง ูููุจูู ุงูุตุญูุญ ููููุงุฏ
18. โIf I wanted, I would have presented
A thousand witnesses, as one is not enough
ูกูจ. ููููู ุฃูุฑุฏุช ูุฃูู
ุช ุดุงููุฏุง
ุฃููุง ููู
ุง ููุฑุถู ุจูู ูููุง ูุงุญูุฏุงู
19. โBut he would kill me, so I have not
Guided him to the treasures of wealthโ

20. The Shaykh said, confused
And startled by its invented words

21. โYou have led me, so I do not care now
If you presented proof or notโ

22. โSo do not deceive me, I do not care
If you spoke truth or lies in your words

23. โThe likes of me are not fooled by the absurd
For being fooled is the ugliest trait

24. โYou are just a wicked charlatan
Walking with the beasts, going and coming

ูุน ุงููุญูุด ุณุงุฆุฑ ูุฑุงุฆุญ
25. โHow do you know what is in my home
Of treasures, in earlier times?

26. โIf you knew the unseen or had knowledge
You would have prospered with it, not sufferedโ

27. โYou were ignorant of your own miserable state
Until you became a hostage, pledgedโ

ุญูุชูู ุบูุฏูุช ู
ูุซููุฉ ุฑููููู
28. โAnd you claim to know what is in my house
None knows the hidden but the Creatorโ

ุง ูู ุฏุงุฑู
ูุง ููุนูู
ุงูุบููุจ ุฅููุง ุงูุจุงุฑู
29. It said โYour ignorance of secrets
Has brought you to the pits of destruction

ุฃุฑุฏุงูู ูู ู
ููุงูุน ุงูุจูุงุฑ
30. โI know them with true knowledge
And the free man does not lie in advice

ุนุฑูุฉ ุตุญูุญุฉ
ููุงูุญุฑ ูุง ููุฐุจ ูู ุงููุตูุญุฉ
31. โSo the description of its traits
Matched what the wicked one spoke of its featuresโ

ูุนุฑูู ู
ูู ุตูุงุชููุง

ุง ุฐูุฑ ุงูุธููู
ู
ูู ุณู
ุงุชููุง
32. Then it hastily named and described it
And told every aspect of its affair and livelihood

ูุณุฑูุนุงู ูููุณุจู
ููููุต ููู ุฃู
ุฑูู ููู
ูุณุจู
33. Recklessly, and it matched good fortune
He said โYou speak truth,โ and he wanted more
ูฃูฃ. ุชูููุฑุงู ูููุงูู ุงูุณุนุงุฏุฉ
ูุงู ุตุฏูุช ููุจุบู ุงูุฒูุงุฏุฉ
34. It said โNow you see a man
Singing a poem, facing us while sitting
ูฃูค. ูุงู ููู ุงูุขู ุชูุฑู ุฅููุณุงูุงู
ู
ูุนุงุฑูุถุงู ูููุดุฏูุง ูุนุฏุงูุง
35. โHe leads a small herd of its offspring
You'd think them weak and infirm from their lookโ
ูฃูฅ. ููููุฏ ู
ูู ุฃูููุงุฏููุง ููุตููุงู
ุชูุญุณุจู ู
ูู ุถูุนููู ุนููููุง
36. โAnd he follows a pockmarked stud donkey
Though it is near him, if he but realizedโ
ูฃูฆ. ูุชุจุน ูุญูุงู ุฏุงุนูุฑูุงู ุฃูุนูุฑุง
ููุฅูููููุง ู
ูููู ููุฑูุจุงู ููู ุฏูุฑู
37. โAnd before that he had seen
Those camel-calves wandering parentlessโ
ูฃูง. ูููุงู ููุฏ ุฃูุจุตูุฑ ููุจู ุฐููููุง
ุชูููู ุงูุฌู
ุงู ุดุฑุฏุงู ุฑูุงุชูุง
38. โRemembering their owner's absence and loss
And their mother complaining of her heart's loveโ
ูฃูจ. ุชุฐูุฑ ุญุงู ุฑูุจููุง ููุณูุจูุง
ููุฃู
ู ุชูุดูู ุบูุฑุงู
ูููุจููุง
39. So the Shaykh went with it a little
Then saw the singer and the small herd
ูฃูฉ. ูุงูุทูู ุงูุดูุฎ ุจููู ูููููุง
ุซูู
ุฑูุฃู ุงููุงุดุฏ ููุงูููุตููุง
40. And when the wicked one saw him
He verified what it had narrated
ูคู . ูุฃุทูู ุงูุธููููู
ุฅูุฐ ุฑุขู
ู
ูุตูุฏูุงู ููุญูู ู
ุง ุญููุงู
41. He found nothing in the burrow, so he came
To feast on his children out of greed
ูคูก. ููุฌุฏ ูู ุฑููุงุญู ููุฌุงุก
ูุญุฑุตู ุฃูููุงุฏู ุนูุดุงุก
42. So he did not speak to them, but spent the night digging
And thus destroyed the house, that fool

ููููู
ูู
ููุจุงุช ููุญูุฑ
ููุฎุฑุจ ุงูุฏุงุฑ ููุฐุงูู ุงูู
ุฏุจุฑ
43. And people blamed him and said heโd gone mad
โWhat treasure did the fool hope for?โ
ูคูฃ. ูููุงู
ูู ุงููุงุณ ูููุงููุง ุฌููุง
ูู ุฃูู ุดููุก ุทู
ุน ุงูู
ุนูู
44. And he kept digging with great effort
But found nothing, and how could he?
ูคูค. ููููู
ููุฒูู ูู ุญููุฑููุง ููุฌุชููุฏ
ููููู
ููุฌุฏ ุดููุฆุงู ููููููู ููุฌุฏ
45. โAnd so you want to trick me
With your sweet words, even if they slay meโ
ูคูฅ. ููููููุฐุง ุชุฑูุฏ ุฃูู ุชูุฎุฏูุนูู
ุจูููููู ุงูุญููู ููุฅูู ุชูุตุฑูุนูู
46. The Shaykh said โWhat do you want
From killing the likes of me? That's far-fetched
ูคูฆ. ูุงูู ููู ุงูุดูุฎ ููู
ุง ุชูุฑูุฏ

ุซูู ุฅููู ุจุนูุฏ
47. โI have nothing with me in my bags
Except these clothes, as you can see

ูุน ุงูุฃูุตุญุงุจ

ูุนู ุดููุก ุณููู ุซููุงุจู
48. โAnd they are, as you observe, rags
Killing is ugliest for their likeโ

ุง ุชุจุตุฑูุง ุฃูุณู

ูููุจุญ ูู ุฃูู
ุซุงููุง ุงูููุชุงู
49. โIf you spare me from harm
I will give you the alms duty owed from my wealth
ูคูฉ. ุฅูููู ุฅูู ูููููุช ุนูู ุฃูุฐุงุชู
ุฃูุนุทูุชู ุงูู
ููุฑูุถ ู
ูู ุฐููุงุชู
50. โAnd I told the company โThis man
Is entitled to zakat, it's obligatoryโ
ูฅู . ูููููุช ููุฑููุฉ ููุฐุง ุทุงูุจ
ููุญูู ู
ูู ุงูุฒูุงุฉ ููุงุฌุจ
51. โAnd when I say this, they'll believe me
And you'll get much good from their charityโ
ูฅูก. ููููู ูู
ุง ุฃูููููู ู
ุตุฏูู
ููุชู ููุซูุฑุงู ุทููุจุงู ู
ูู ุตุฏูู
52. โIt would be better for you in both abodes
Than you see in slaying me at my timeโ
ูฅูข. ูููุงูู ุฎููุฑุงู ูููู ูู ุงูุฏุงุฑูู

ููุชุชู ููุญููู
53. So the killer was fooled by the absurdity
And said โWill you swear to your words?โ
ูฅูฃ. ููุงููุฎุฏุน ุงููุงุชู ุจุงูู

ูููุงูู ููู ุชุตุฏู ูู ุงูู
ููุงู
54. And he swore to what he had said, so he swore
And the mighty Shaykh turned away and diverted

ูููู ูุญูู
ููุงูุตุฑู ุงูุดูุฎ ุงูุดุฏูุฏ ููุงูุญุฑู
55. Until when he reached the caravan
He said โTie him up tight, O companions
ูฅูฅ. ุญูุชููู ุฅูุฐุง ู
ุง ููุญููุง ุจุงูุฑูุจ
ูุงูู ุงุฑุจุทูู ุฌููุฏุงู ูุง ุตูุญุจู
56. โFor he is a wicked, vile thief
Who robs and plunders the Muslimsโ
ูฅูฆ. ููุฅูููููู ูุต ุฎูุจูุซ ุญุงุฑุจ

ูู ูุงูุจ ููุณุงูุจ
57. So the killer was bound very tightly
And his adversary gained power over him
ูฅูง. ููุฑูุจุท ุงููุงุชู ุฑูุจุทุงู ู

ููุนุงุฏู ูููู ุฎูุตู
ูู ู
ุญูู
ุง
58. The holy man said, laughing
โYou sought evil, and evil is deadly
ูฅูจ. ูุงูู ููู ุงููุงุณู ููููู ููุถุญู
ุจุบูุช ููุงูุจูุบู ู
ุดูู

59. โYou have become a parable after your proverbs
And mention of the wicked one and the calf
ูฅูฉ. ููููุนุช ุจุนุฏ ุถูุฑุจู ุงูุฃูู
ุซุงูุง
ููุฐูุฑู ุงูุธููู
ููุงูุฌูู
ุงูุง
60. It said โHow can I escape
One whom I see has power over me to kill me?โ
ูฆู . ูุงู ููู ุงููุงุชู ููููู ุฃูุชู
ุจูู
ูู ุฃุฑุงูู ูู ููุฏููู ุฃูููู
61. โHe who feels safe from destiny is an idolator
Destiny is mightier over menโ
ูฆูก. ู
ูู ุฃูู
ู ุงูููุถุงุก ููููู ู
ูุดุฑู
ุฅูู ุงูููุถุงุก ูููุนุจุงุฏ ุฃูู
ูู
62. โDo not rejoice, for talk goes on
I am tricked and you are treacherous
ูฆูข. ูุง ุชููุฑูุญู ููุงูุญูุฏูุซ ุณุงุฆุฑ

ูุฎุฏูุน ููุฃูุชู ุบุงุฏูุฑ
63. โBetrayal of covenant is very ugly
The worst of creation are those who do not keep covenantโ
ูฆูฃ. ููุงูุบูุฏุฑ ุจูุงูุนููุฏ ููุจูุญ ุฌุฏุง
ุดูุฑ ุงูููุฑู ู
ู ูููุณู ููุฑุนู ุนููุฏุง
64. โYou have power over me, so I plead
And overlook your ugly betrayalโ
ูฆูค. ุฅูููู ููุฏ ู
ููููุชููู ููุฃูุณุฌุญ
ููุงู
ุญ ุญูุฏูุซ ุบูุฏุฑู ุงูู
ุณุชูุจุญ
65. โI am a captive, I see no helper
The exalted does not kill prisoners
ูฆูฅ. ุฅููู ุฃูุณูุฑ ูุง ุฃูุฑู ููุตูุฑุงู
ููุฐู ุงูุนูุง ูุง ููุชู ุงูุฃูุณูุฑุง
66. โKilling prisoners is the evilest of traits
The first martyr is called 'the patient'
ูฆูฆ. ุดุฑ ุฎููุงู ุงูู
ูุฑุก ููุชู ุงูุฃูุณุฑู
ุฃููู ู
ููุชูู ูููุงู ุตูุจุฑุง
67. โHe was a rock, a companion of the Prophet
And he was with Ali in all conditionsโ
ูฆูง. ุญุฌุฑู ููุญุฌุฑู ุตุงุญุจ ุงููููุจู
ูููุงู ูู ุงูุฃูุญูุงู ู
ูุน ุนูู
68. โI have gotten what I wanted from you
So favor me, for now is the time for favorโ
ูฆูจ. ููููุฏ ุจูููุบุช ู
ุง ุฃูุฑุฏุช ู
ููู
ูุงู
ูู ููููุฐุง ุงููููุช ูููุช ุงูู
ู
69. It said โRepent sincerely,โ and he repented
And gathered the companions and comrades
ูฆูฉ. ูุงู ููู ุชุจ ู
ุฎูุตุงู ููุชุงุจุง
ููุฌู
ุน ุงูุฑูุงู ููุงูุฃูุตุญุงุจุง
70. And related what had occurred of the affair
And said โTreachery is for the wretchedโ
ูงู . ููููุต ู
ุง ูุงู ู
ูู ุงูุญูุฏูุซ
ูููุงูู ุฅูู ุงูุบูุฏุฑ ููุฎุจูุซ
71. โAnd now he has repented of corruption
And become a worshipper in religionโ
ูงูก. ููุงูุขู ููุฏ ุชุงุจ ู
ูู ุงูููุณุงุฏ
ููุตุงุฑู ูู ุงูุฏูู ู
ูู ุงูุนูุจุงุฏ
72. So they collected some zakat
And were quick to give donations to him
ูงูข. ููุฌูู
ุนูุง ุดููุฆุงู ู
ูู ุงูุฒูุงุฉ
ููุจุงุฏูุฑูุง ุฅูููููู ุจูุงููุจุงุช
73. And released him, so the next day he said
โI have outwitted you, O fool
ูงูฃ. ููุฃุทูููู ููุบูุฏุง ููููู
ุฎูุฏุนุช ุนูู ุฑุงูู ูุง ุฌูููู
74. โHe who gets what he wants has won
We agreed and differed in the causeโ
ูงูค. ู
ูู ูุงูู ู
ุง ููุฑูุฏู ููููุฏ ุบูููุจ
ููุฏ ุงูุชูููููุง ููุงูุฎุชูููููุง ูู ุงูุณููุจุจ
