ظعائن إما من هلال ذؤابة

أصلي حيث تدركني صلاتي

هل تعرف اليوم من ماوية الطللا
Do you know the abode today from the ruins of Mawiya
لولا هوان الخمر ما ذقت طعمها
If not for the disgrace of wine, I'd not have tasted its flavor
غدا ابنا وائل ليعاتباني
Tomorrow Wael's sons will come to reproach me,
إنا لحباسون عكافة بنا
We are steadfast guardians of its sanctuary
قد كشف الحلم عني الجهل فانقشعت
Wisdom has unveiled my ignorance and dispelled my confusion,
حي المنازل بين السفح والرحب
The dwellings between the slopes and plains
عفا الجو من سلمى فبادت رسومها
The air has relented from Salma, so its traces faded away
إذا ذكر النساء بيوم خير

ألا بان بالرهن الغداة الحبائب
Behold, at dawn the beloved ones set out with the pledge
لست بصائم رمضان طوعا

لولا آصرات بني زهير
Were it not for protecting the women of Bani Zuheir
عفا واسط من أهله فمذانبه
A protector from his people departed, so their pastures
ما يضير البحر أمسى زاخرا
What harm would the sea sustain
وبيضاء لا لون النجاشي لونها
White in color, not Negus-colored
ذببت عن أعراضكم آل وائل
I have shunned the ways of all who perished before
ألا يا لقوم للتنائي وللهجر
Oh people prone to separation and estrangement
لقد غدوت على الندمان لا حصر
You have become accustomed to regret without limit,
وما أصابت تميم إذ تفاخرنا
And nothing afflicted Tamim while they boasted against us
ومترعة كأن الورد فيها
And a meadow, as though roses therein
ألم تر قيسا في المواطن أوثرت
Have you not seen Qays preferred
ألا طرقتنا ليلة أم هيثم
Oh didn't the mother of Haytham visit us one night,
وأبيض لا نكسس ولا واهن القوى
With unfaltering strength and untiring zeal
لعمرك ما لاقيت يوم معيشة
Never in my life have I known a day of livelihood
خلعت عنان الفودجية بعدما
I loosened the reins of my she-camel after she
ألا يا اسقياني وانفيا عنكما القذى
Oh pourers of wine, be gentle as you pour
لقد عثرت بكر بن وائل عثرة
Bakr son of Wail stumbled once,
صدع الخليط فشاقني أجواري
The fermented mixture broke me, my insides cracked
ومحبوسة في الحي ضامنة القرى
Imprisoned in life and guardian of villages
بئس الفوارس عند معترك القنا
Wretched are the knights when spears collide,
خف القطين فراحوا منك أو بكروا
The cats have calmed down and left you or woke up early,
أتاني ودوني الزابيان كلاهما
The two friends came to me, both of them alike
عفا واسط من آل رضوى فنبتل
A mediator from the virtuous family of Raddwa has appeared, so let us put him to the test
حلت سليمى بدوغان وشط بها

يا مي هلا يجازي بعض ودكم
O May, won't some of your affection reward
ألا يا اسلمي يا أم بشر على الهجر
O my dear Islam, O mother of good tidings, farewell
بانت سعاد ففي العينين ملمول
Joy has appeared, so my eyes are tearful
عفا دير لبى من أميمة فالحضر
The dwellings of Li’b have been abandoned even by livestock,
تغير الرسم من سلمى بأحفار
The ruins have changed since Salma's passing,
ألا يالزيد اللات ما بال راية
O Zaid, by God! Why raise a banner, after the affair is lost,
ما زالت الدور والأبواب تدفعني

حبيب بن عتاب أرى الأمر جنبة

لم تظلما أن تكفيا الحي ضيفهم
You did no wrong in hosting the living
تقول وقد ظللت بعوف سوء
You say, though in evil's shade I dwell,
أعاذل نعم قوم الحرب قومي
I censure, though my people love war, my people,
كأن مشنقا غول أضلت
As if a ghoul, a hanged man, had misled
ألا يا اسلما على التقادم والبلى
Alas, O Islam, for the ravages of time,
هلا أنختم لابن وحف فإنه
Why not conclude a pact with the son of Wahf, for he
أبلغ بني عوف بأن جنابهم
Tell the clan of Awf that their side
حباني إذ جهلت بنو زهير
The clan of Zuhair treated me in ignorance
أبلغ عكبا وأشياعها
Convey to the clan of 'Ikab and its neighborhood
لقد جارى أبو ليلى بقحم
Abu Layla has wronged me with deceit and slander,
عقدنا حبلنا لبني شئيم
We tied our rope for the sons of Shaiym
رحلت فلم تترك لنفسك حاجة
You left, not leaving yourself any need,
ألا أبلغ أبا الدلماء عني

أتعرف من أسماء بالجد روسما

لم أر ملحمة مثلها

ألا يا ليت كلبا بادلونا
Alas! If only they had traded me
أما كليب بن يربوع فإن لها
Kulayb son of Yarbu’ has the worst
يا كعب لا تهجونا العام معترضا
O Ka'b do not satirize us this year, intruding,
ألا تنهى بنو عجل جريرا
Will not Banu 'Ijil cease opposing Jarir
أرى شعراء الناس لما تقاذفوا
I see people's poets as they flung
لعمري لقد دلى إلى اللحد خالد
By my life, Khaled was certainly carried to his grave,
هجوت ابن الفريعة إذ هجاني
Ibn al-Furay'ah insulted me when he insulted,
لعمرك إنا من زهير بن جندب
By your life! Indeed, we are from Zuheir bin Jundab
دعاني امرؤ أحمى على الناس عرضه
A hot-headed man implored me to protect his honor among the people
هجا الناس ليلى أم كعب فلم يدع
People scorned Layla, mother of Ka'b, yet spared
لا يرهب الضبع من أمست بعقوته
The hyena frightens none by his yawning
كذبتك عينك أم رأيت بواسط

أقفرت البلخ من عيلان فالرحب
The deserts of Balkh are empty of tents, the open plains,
يا يومنا عندها عد بالنعيم لنا
O our day when she is there, promise us bliss

بنو دارم عند السماء وأنتم
The tribe of Darim near the sky while you
الكاملبان الشباب وربما عللته

ألا لا تلوميني على الخمر عاذلا

ألا إن زيد اللات يوم لقيتها
Lo! Zayd of the tribe of Lat, when I met him
يمشون حول جنابيه وبغلته
They walk around his side and his she-camel
هل تعرف الدار قد محت معارفها
Do you know the abode whose loved ones have been erased
إذا ما قلت قد صالحت بكرا
If I say I've made peace with Bakr
ودعا اللؤم أهله وبنيه
The ignoble called his family and sons,
إني أظن نزارا سوف يجمعها
I think that Nizar will someday gather them,
أودت عكب ما تحس وخالد

رأيت قريشا حين ميز بينها

لهان على فتيان بكر ابن وائل

With furtive sips the tippler sighs,
راح تعارف فيها معشر شطر
A tribe gathered, kin unknown before
محا رسم دار بالصريمة مسبل
The trace of a house in ruins wiped away
سقاني خيار شربة رنحت بنا
A waterskin gave me to drink when I was thirsty,
لقد جاريت يا ابن أبي جرير
O son of Abu Jarir, you have wronged me
ما لعياض جب خصييه مسحت
A mount that clove his loins with Moses' staff -
ألا سائل الجحاف هل هو ثائر
O questioner of Al-Juhaf, is he now aroused
أتغضب قيس أن هجوت ابن مسمع
Does Qais get angry when I satirize the son of Misma'
هوى أم بشر أن تراني بغبطة
A mother of mankind wished to see me in joy,
ألا حييا دارا لأم هشام
Oh, hail to a house for the mother of Hisham,
ألم تشكر لنا كلب بأنا

عز الشراب فأقبلت مشروبة

ما جذع سوء خرق السوس أصله
لتبك أبا سمعان أطاطة الضحى
إذا لان الصفا عن طول نحت
ما زال ألسنة الناطقين
حلت صبيرة أمواه العداد وقد
ألم تعرض فتسأل آل لهو
صحا القلب عن أروى وأقصر باطله
عفا ممن عهدت به حفير
أتنكر الدار أم عرفان منزلة
لمن الديار بحائل فوعال
بانت سعاد ففي العينين تسهيد
لعمري لقد أسريت لا ليل عاجز
آذنوا بالبين جيرانهم
ألم على عنبات العجوز
لخولة بالدومي رسم كأنه
لجيم بن صعب لم تنلها عداوتي
يا عامر ابن عمير أنت مدرهنا
ألا جعل الله الأخلاء كلهم
حريث ابن مسعود عليه رحالة
أفي كل عام لا يزال لعامر
راح القطين من الثغراء أو بكروا
رحلت أمامة للفراق جمالها
ألا يا إسلمي بالسعد يا أخت دارم
لعمري لقد ناطت هوازن أمرها
ما زال فينا رباط الخيل معلمة
بينا يجول بها عرته ليلة
دنا البين من أروى فزالت حمولها
ألا طرقت أروى الرحال وصحبتي
حوبيب ابن عتاب أرى الأمر جنبة
هنيئة في الضلال وعبد بكر
خبر بني الصلت عنا إن لقيتهم
لقد ترك الحروب نساء قيس
أتاني ودوني الزابيان كلاهما
نصبنا لكم رأسا فلم تكلموا به
أتاني وأهلي بالجزيرة من منى
وبالجزع من خفان صاحبت عصبة
إذا هبطن مناخا ينتطحن به
أذكرت عهدك فاعترتك صبابة
نبئت كلبا تمنى أن تسافهنا
ألهى جريرا عن أبيه وأمه
سعى لي قومي سعي قوم أعزة
مالك عز التغلبي الذي له
أما أبو سعد فلم تثأروا به
تقول أبا عمرو علي فلا تعد
سرين لبلكوث ثلاثا عواملا
بني مسمع أنتم ذؤابة معشر
ألم ترني أجرت بني فقيم
لعمر أبيك يا زفر ابن عمر
صرمت حبالك زينب وقذور
صرمت أمامة حبلها ورعوم
خليلي قوما للرحيل فإنني
أجرير إنك والذي تسمو له
ألا يا اسلمي يا هند هند بني بدر
