1. Deliver to the Commander of the Faithful a message
In return for blessings he received and intercession made

2. That the sword of Allah's servants will be your sword, so let him
Be the brother and bosom friend, beyond any friend

3. With him, may Allah have mercy on the troops, so they came
While desires were inclined, each way bent

4. And he was not absent from the day of Ibn 'Urwah
As he was not absent from the night of Ibn 'Aqil

5. The brother of war, its harm distressed him so he is no coward
Nor faint of heart or heavily burdened

6. When he shields the Euphrates water, you will never see
A brother giving drink to a brother more generous

7. And he has turned away from you a snake, that if enabled
From the land, would have been a malignant serpent
