نظرت وأعلام الشرية دوننا

بكى سائب لما رأى رمل عالج

A weeping Saib cried when he saw the sand dunes of Alej

أشاقك برق آخر الليل خافق

Another lightning flashed at the end of night

وقلن وقد يكذبن فيك تعيف

ألا تلك عزة قد أصبحت

رأيت أبا الحجناء في الناس جائزا

ألا حييا ليلى أجد رحيلي

نادي لجيراننا يقصدوا

رأيت غرابا ساقطا فوق بانة

أقوى وأقفر من ماوية البرق

يا عين بكي للذي عالني

Oh eye, weep for the one who wronged me

أأطلال سلمى باللوى تتعهد

لعزة من أيام ذي الغصن هاجني

أهاجك بالعبوقرة الديار

The abodes were stirred by passionate love

دعينا ابنة الكعبي والمجد والعلى

Let us leave the daughter of Ka'b and glory and elevation

عفا السفح من أم الوليد فكبكب

The plain of Umm al-Walid sloped gently, so we descended,

ما بال مولى أنت ضامن غيه

What is it, my Lord, that you guarantee the misguided one,

اذكر سعيدا بخلات سبقن له

Remember Sa'id with stinginess preceding him,

ألا طرقت بعد العشاء جنوب

أمن أم عمرو بالخريق ديار

ما بل ذاك البيت الذي كنت آلفا

سأتك وقد أجد بها البكور

I yearned for her when dawn's first light appeared

أصادرة حجاج كعب ومالك

يا أيها المتمني أن يكون فتى

O you who wishes to be a noble youth

بأبي وأمي أنت من مظلومة

By my father and mother you are of the oppressed

ألم تربع فتخبرك الطلول

Did the ruins not inform you, with their clearly drawn outline

يقول العدا يا عز قد حال دونكم

The enemy said, "O Az, a brave man stands in your way,

يا لقومي لحبلك المصروم

O my people, your rope is frayed

طرب الفؤاد فهاج لي ددني

سيأتي أمير المؤمنين ودونه

عفا ميث كلفى بعدنا فالأجاول

أقول وقد جاوزن من صدر رابغ

لك الويل من عيني خبيب وثابت

Woe to you from the eyes of Khubayb and Thabit,

أمن آل سلمى الرسم أنت مسائل

Are you from the family of Salma, the one who questions?

إلى ظعن يتبعن في قتر الضحى

To ravines they followed in the darkness of dusk,

ألمم بعزة إن الركب منطلق

With pride and honor the caravan sets forth

شجا قلبه أظعان سعدى السوالك

The complaints of Sa'dya's camels have broken his heart

خليلي إن أم الحكيم تحملت

My friend, Umm Al-Hakim endured

عفا الله عن أم الحويرث ذنبها

May God forgive Umm Al-Huwairith her sin

صديقك حين تستغي كثير

When you are rich, friends for you there are many

وأنت لعيني قرة حين نلتقي

You bring joy to my eyes whenever we meet

حيتك عزة بعد الهجر وانصرفت

Your greeting was pride after estrangement and then withdrew,

لقد كنت للمظلوم عزا وناصرا

Truly, you were solace for the oppressed, their mighty defender,

أيادي سبا يا عز ما كنت بعدكم

The hands of Saba, O honored one, after you

لتبك البواكي المبكيات أبا وهب

Let the weepers weep over the weeping one, O Abā Wahb,

ما عناك الغداة من أطلال

What reminds you of the ruins early in the morning,

على خالد أصبحت أبكي لخالد

For Khalid I weep at dawn, confessing

وإني لأسمو بالوصال إلى التي

Though I aspire to be united with her

ويوم الوغى يوم الطعان إذا اكتسى

The day of battle, the day of thrusting spears, when arrayed,

تشوف من صوت الصدى كلما دعا

Longing for the echo's voice whenever it calls

لقد أزمعت للبين هند زيالها

The doe longs for the faraway pastures

إلى الله أشكو لا إلى الناس حبها

To God I complain, not to people, of her love,

تيممت لهبا أبتغي العلم عندهم

I sought knowledge from their conflagration

أنت إمام الحق لسنا نمتري

You are the Imam of truth, we do not doubt

سراج الدجى صفر الحشا منتهى المنى

The lamp of nightfall, the yellow of autumn

وقلت لها ياعز أرسل صاحبي

I said to her, “O most precious one, my friend sent

وإنك عمري هل ترى ضوء بارق

My life, do you see the gleaming light

عرفت الدار قد أقوت بريم

I knew the house had become strong with spears

توهمت بالخيف رسما محيلا

I fancied in the dark a wondrous shape

أأطلال دار بالنياع فحمت

Ruins of an abode which lamentations have made desolate,

عجبت لبرئي منك يا عز بعدما

I'm amazed at being healed by you, O solace, after

سقى دمنتين لم نجد لهما مثلا

Two she-camels that we could find no match for,

شجا أظعان غاضرة الغوادي

The green fields of Ghāḍira grieved

أهاجك ليلى إذ أجد رحيلها

Leila stirred him when she made ready to depart

أتاني ودوني بطن غول ودونه

He came to me while my inner self was in turmoil,

كأن فاها لمن توسنها

Her mouth is as if it were for one who humbles himself to it

لا تكفرن قوما عززت بعزهم

Do not deny a people whose might has empowered you

وددت وما تغني الودادة أنني

I yearned, though yearning avails not, that I knew

صحا قلبه يا عز أو كاد يذهل

His heart was almost rent asunder, O nobility, or became confused,

وأنت التي حببت شغبي إلى بدا

You are the one who made my mischief dear to the wilderness

هو التيس لؤما وهو إن راء غفلة

He is the billy-goat, vicious when he sees inattention

أبت إيلي ماء الرداه وشفها

عرج بأطراف الديار وسلم

إذا أمسيت بطن مجاح دوني

لعزة هاج الشوق فالدمع سافح

غشيت لليلى بالبرود مساكنا

لعزة أطلال أبت أن تكلما

برئت إلى الإله من ابن أروى

أأطلال دار من سعاد بيلبن

وراجعت نفسي واعترتني صبابة

رأيت أبا الوليد غداة جمع

فكم من يتامى بوس قد جبرتها

أشاقك برق آخر الليل واصب

عفت غيقة من أهلها فجنوبها

أمن آل سلمى دمنة بالذنائب

جزتك الجوازي عن صديقك نضرة

فلولا الله ثم ندى ابن ليلى

حبال سجيفة أمست رثاثا

تقطع من ظلامة الوصل أجمع

ألا أن نأت سلمى فأنت عميد

أليس أبي بالصلت والد أسرتي

وإني لأستأني ولولا طماعتي

تلهو فتختضع المطي أمامها

لعمري لقد رعتم غداة سويقة

غدت من خصوص الطف ثم تمرست

تنيل قليلا في تناء وهجرة

ولولا حبكم لتضاعفتني

أهاجك من سعدى الغداة طلول

أمن آل قيلة بالدخول رسوم

أمن طلل أقوى من الحي ماثله

ألما على سلمى نسلم ونسأل

ألا يا لقومي للنوى وانفتالها

وهاجرة يا عز يلتف حرها

خير إخوانك المشارك في الأم

أهاجك مغنى دمنة ومساكن
