حي المنازل قد عفت أطلالها

1. The dwellings have faded in decay
And their vestiges have faded away

١. حَيِّ المَنازِلَ قَد عَفَت أَطلالُها
وَعَفا الرُسومَ بِمورِهِنَّ شَمالُها

2. I stood in ruins and said to my friend
As my eyes outpaced their gaze

٢. قَفراً وَقَفتُ بِها فَقُلتُ لِصاحِبي
وَالعَينُ يَسبُقُ طَرفَها إِسبالُها

3. Stronger than the stones of Mabarrah's ruins
Its ramparts have crumbled away

٣. أَقوى الغَياطِلُ مِن حِراجِ مَبَرَّةٍ
فَخُبوتُ سَهوَةَ قَد عَفَت فَرِمالُها

4. And its towering heights have diminished
Until they were leveled and razed

٤. وَتَقاصَرَت أُصُلاً شُخوصُ أُرومِها
حَتّى مَثَلنَ وَأَعرَضَت أَغفَالُها

5. Those who stand before and behind it
With burnished, shining swords

٥. الضارِبونَ أَمامَها وَوَراءَها
بِمُهنَّداتٍ قَد أُجيد صِقالُها

6. Wisdom lodged most firmly in his heart
Where its specter appeared on the hillside

٦. الحِلمُ أَثبَتُ مَنزِلاً في صَدرِهِ
مِن هَضبِ صِندِدَ حَيثُ حَلَّ خَيالُها

7. When issues arose, his face shone
As the cups of his sword and scabbard glistened

٧. وَلَوَجهُهُ عِندَ المَسائِل إِذ غَدا
وَغَدَت فَواضِلُ سَيبِهِ وَنَوالُها

8. Brighter than a monk's pure water
Gleaming like the statue in its niche

٨. بِالخَيرِ أَبلَجُ مِن سِقايَةِ راهِبٍ
تُجلى بِمَوزَنَ مُشرِقٌ تِمثالُها
