- أأجفى بلا جرم وأقصى بلا ذنبAm I spurned without offense and cast aside without fault,
- أأسلب من وصالك ما كسيتAm I to be stripped of the union with you in which I was clad,
- أتاك محييا عني اعتذاراIt has come to greet you on my behalf, as an apology:
- أتتك بلون المحب الخجلThey came to you in the bashful lover’s hue,
- أتهجرني وتغصبني كتابيDo you forsake me and rob me of my letter?
- أثرت هزبر الشرى إذ ربضYou roused the lion of al-Shara as he lay crouched,
- أجد ومن أهواه في الحب عابثI am earnest, while the one I love is frivolous in love.
- أجل إن ليلى حيث أحياؤها الأسدYes, Layla, where her clans are lions,
- أحمدت عاقبة الدواءMay you find the remedy's outcome good,
- أحين علمت حظك من وداديWas it when you knew your share of my love,
- اخطب فملكك يفقد الإملاكاSeek a bride, for your kingship lacks wedlock;
- أدرها فقد حسن المجلسThe gathering has been good, and it is time the cups are passed around.
- أذكرتني سالف العيش الذي طاباYou reminded me of the bygone life that was sweet.
- أرخصتني من بعد ما أغليتنيYou cheapened me after you had prized me,
- أستودع الله من أصفي الوداد لهI entrust to God the one to whom I give my love
- أسقيط الطل فوق النرجسIs it dewfall upon the narcissus,
- أشمت بي فيك العداYou made my foes gloat over me because of you,
- أصخ لمقالتي واسمعLend an ear to my speech and listen.
- أضحى التنائي بديلا من تدانيناSeparation has become a substitute for our closeness,
- إعجب لحال السرو كيف تحالMarvel at nobility's condition, how it is transformed,
- أعرفك راح في عرف الرياحWas it your scent that wafted in the winds' fragrance,
- أغائبة عني وحاضرة معيO you who are absent from me yet present with me,
- أفاض سماحك بحر الندىYour generosity pours the sea of dew,
- أفدتني من نفائس الدررYou bestowed on me treasures of precious pearls,
- أقدم كما قدم الربيع الباكرI come forward as the early spring came forward,
- أكرم بولادة ذخرا لمدخرHow fine a treasure Wallada would be for one who treasures her,
- ألا ليت شعري هل أصادف خلوةAh, if only I knew whether I might find a moment alone
- ألا هل درى الداعي المثوب إذ دعاAh, did the crier repeating his call know, when he announced
- الدهر إن أملى فصيح أعجمTime, when it dictates, is eloquent though mute;
- ألم تر أن الشمس قد ضمها القبرHave you not seen that the grave has embraced the sun,
- ألم يأن أن يبكي الغمام على مثليIs it not time for the clouds to weep for one like me,
- الهوى في طلوع تلك النجومLove lies in the rising of those stars,
- إليك من الأنام غدا ارتياحيOf all humankind, my delight has turned to you,
- أما رضاك فعلق ما له ثمنAs for your favor, it is a treasure beyond price—
- أما علمت أن الشفيع شبابHas she not learned that youth is the intercessor,
- أما في نسيم الريح عرف معرفIs there not a familiar fragrance in the breeze
- أَما وَأَلحاظٍ مِراضٍ صِحاحIndeed, by glances languid yet sound,
- أمولاي بلغت أقصى الأملO my lord, may you be granted your highest hope,
- إن تكن نالتك بالضرب يديIf my hand has struck you,
- إن ساء فعلك بي فما ذنبي أناIf your actions towards me are bad, what is my crime?
- إن للأرض والسماء وللماIndeed, the earth, the sky, and water
- أنا ظرف للهو كل ظريفI am a vessel for every refined person's pleasure.
- أنت المسبب للولوعYou are the cause of ardent love,
- أنت معنى الضنى وسر الدموعYou are the meaning of longing and the secret of tears
- أنى أضيع عهدكHow could I forsake my pledge to you,
- إني ذكرتك بازهراء مشتاقاI remembered you at al-Zahra, full of longing,
- أهدي إلي بقية المسواكGive me the remnant of the tooth-cleaning twig;
- أيتها النفس إليه اذهبيO soul, go to him,
- أيها البدر الذيO full moon who
- أيها الظافر أبشر بالظفرO victor, rejoice in victory
- أيوحشني الزمان وأنت أنسيDoes time make me lonely when you are my solace?
- باعدت بالإعراض غير مباعدBy turning away, you kept at a distance one who did not keep away.
- بالله خذ من حياتيFor God's sake, take from my life
- بني جهور أحرقتم بجفائكمSons of Jahwar, with your coldness you have burned
- بنيت فلا تهدم ورشت فلا تبرYou built—so do not demolish; you gave me feathers—do not strip them away.
- بيني وبينك ما لو شئت لم يضعBetween me and you is something that, had you wished, would not have been lost:
- تنشق من عرف الصبا ما تنشقاHe inhaled what he inhaled of the east wind's fragrance;
- ثقي بي يا معذبتي فإنيTrust me, O my tormentor, for I
- جاءتك وافدة الشمولWine's envoy has come to you
- جازيتني عن تمادي الوصل هجراناYou repaid me for continued closeness with estrangement,
- خليلي لا فطر يسر ولا أضحىMy two friends, neither Eid al-Fitr nor Eid al-Adha brings joy.
- خنت عهدي ولم أخنYou broke faith with me, but I did not betray.
- دونك الراح جامدهHere, take the wine, frozen.
- راحت فصح بها السقيمIt wafted in, and through it the sick grew well—
- رضاك لنا قبل الطهور مطهرYour favor purifies us before the cleansing water does.
- سأحب أعدائي لأنك منهمI will love my enemies because you are among them.
- سأقنع منك بلحظ البصرI shall be content with a glimpse of you,
- سأهدي النفس في نفس الشمالI shall send my soul as a gift on the north wind's breath,
- سرك الدهر وساءTime has gladdened you and grieved you;
- سري وجهري أنني هائمMy secret and my avowal are that I am lost in love.
- سقى الغيث أطلال الأحبة بالحمىMay the rain water the loved ones' ruined dwellings in the sanctuary,
- سل المعشر الأعداء إن رمت صرفهمAsk the enemy host, if you sought to turn them
- شحطنا وما بالدار نأي ولا شحطWe have grown distant, though the dwelling is neither far nor remote;
- طابت لنا ليلتنا الخاليهOur bygone night was sweet to us;
- عاودت ذكرى الهوى من بعد نسيانI recalled love anew after forgetting,
- عذري إن عذلت في خلع عذريMy excuse, if you tire of excusing me,
- عذيري من خليل يستطيلWho will defend me against an overbearing friend,
- عرفت عرف الصبا إذ هب عاطرهI recognized the fragrance of the east wind when its scented breath blew,
- علام صرمت حبلك من وصولWhy have you severed your cord from a devoted lover?
- على الثغب الشهدي مني تحيةTo al-Thaghab al-Shahdi, the honey-sweet pool, a greeting from me:
- عمر من يعمر ذا المجلساMay he who inhabits this hall be granted
- غريب بأقصى الشرق يشكر للصباA stranger in the farthest East thanks the east wind
- غمرتني لك الأيادي البيضYour white hands of bounty have overwhelmed me:
- فز بالنجاح وأحرز الإقبالاWin success and secure good fortune.
- في جواركم الذليلIn your company the lowly one,
- قال لي اعتل من هويت حسودAn envious man told me, “The one you love has fallen ill.”
- قد أحسن الله في الذي صنعهGod has indeed done well in what He has wrought;
- قد بعثناه ينفع الأعضاءWe have indeed sent it to benefit the organs,
- قد علقنا سواك علقا نفيساWe have indeed grown attached to another than you, a precious treasure,
- قد نالني منك ما حسبي به وكفىI've received enough from you to satisfy me,
- قل لأبي حفص ولم تكذبSay to Abu Hafs—and you will not be lying—
- قل للوزير وقد قطعت بمدحهTell the minister—I spent in praising him
- كأن عشي القطر في شاطئ النهرAs though the rainy evening on the riverbank—
- كم ذا أريد ولا أرادHow long shall I desire, yet not be desired?
- كم لريح الغرب من عرف نديHow much dewy fragrance the west wind bears,
- كما تشاء فقل لي لست منتقلاSay whatever you please to me—I shall not turn away.
- لا افتنان كافتنانيNo allurement like my allurement
- لبيض الطلى ولسود اللممBecause of white necks and black tresses,
- لَحا اللَهُ يَوماً لَستُ فيهِ بِمُلتَقِMay God curse a day when I do not see
- لست بالجاحد آلاء العللI do not deny the blessings of ailments.
- لست من بابة الملوك أبا الYou are not of the kings' class, O Abū al-
- لعمري لئن قلت إليك رسائليBy my life, if my messages to you grow few
- لقد سرنا أن النعي موكلIt has indeed gladdened us that the herald of death is assigned
- للحب في تلك القباب مرادLove has a desire in those domed tents,
- لم يكن هجر حبيبي عن قلىMy beloved's estrangement was not out of aversion.
- لَمّا اِتَّصَلتِ اِتِّصالَ الخِلبِ بِالكَبِدِWhen you clung to me as the membrane clings to the liver,
- لو أنني لك في الأهواء مختارIf I were free to choose for you in matters of desire,
- لو تركنا بأن نعودك عدناIf we were allowed to visit you, we would visit,
- لو كان قولك مت ما كان ردي لاIf your command were “Die,” my reply would not be “No.”
- لئن فاتني منك حظ النظرEven if I am denied the chance to gaze upon you,
- لئن قصر اليأس منك الأملThough despair of you has cut hope short,
- لئن كنت في السن ترب الهلالThough in age you are the crescent moon's peer,
- ليهن الهدى إنجاح سعيك في العداMay right guidance rejoice at your successful striving against the foes,
- ليهنك أن أحمدت عاقبة الفصدMay you rejoice that your bloodletting has ended well;
- ما جال بعدك لحظي في سنا القمرSince you left, my gaze has never roamed in the moon's radiance
- ما ضر لو أنك لي راحمWhat harm would it do if you showed me mercy,
- ما طول عذلك للمحب بنافعYour long reproach is of no use to the lover.
- ما على ظني باسThere is nothing wrong with my expectation:
- ما للمدام تديرها عيناكWhat is it with the wine your eyes pass round,
- متى أبثك ما بيWhen shall I confide to you what ails me,
- مرادهم حيث السلاح خمائلTheir roaming ground is where weapons form thickets,
- من كان مرتحلا بقلب محبهIf anyone should depart with his lover’s heart
- من مبلغ عني البدر الذي كملاWho will tell, on my behalf, the full moon that reached perfection
- هذا الصباح على سراك رقيباHere is dawn, keeping watch over your night journey;
- هل النداء الذي أعلنت مستمعIs the call I proclaimed being heard?
- هل راكب ذاهب عنهم يحيينيIs there a rider leaving them who will greet me,
- هل عهدنا الشمس تعتاد الكللHave we known the sun to grow weary,
- هل لداعيك مجيبIs there an answerer for one who calls to you,
- هل يشكرن أبو الوليدWill Abu al-Walid indeed give thanks
- هو الدهر فاصبر للذي أحدث الدهرSuch is Time: endure what Time has brought about.
- هو الدهر فاصبر للذي أحدث الدهرSuch is Time; be patient with what Time has brought.
- هواي وإن تناءت عنك داريMy love, even if my home grows distant from you,
- هي الشمس مغربها في الكللShe is the sun: her setting-place is within the canopies,
- وبنفسي وإن أضر بنفسيEven by my life, though it harms my life,
- ودع الصبر محب ودعكA lover who bade you farewell has bidden patience farewell.
- ورامشة يشفي العليل نسيمهاAnd a bouquet whose breeze heals the ailing,
- وشادن أسأله قهوةAnd a young gazelle—I asked him for wine;
- وضح الحق المبينThe manifest truth became clear,
- ولما التقينا للوداع غديةAnd when we met for farewell early one morning,
- وليل أدمنا فيه شرب مدامةAnd one night we kept drinking wine,
- وما ضربت عتبى لذنب أتت بهI see no harm in myself, though each event
- يا أيها الملك الجليO majestic king,
- يا بانيا كل مجدO builder of all glory,
- يا دمع صب ما شئت أن تصوباO tears, pour as much as you wish to pour.
- يا سؤل نفسي إن أحكمO my soul’s desire, if I am made the judge,
- يا ظبية لطفت مني منازلهاO gazelle, whose dwelling places within me are delicate—
- يا غزالا أصارنيO gazelle who has made me
- يا غزالا جمعت فيهO gazelle, in whom are gathered
- يا قاطعا حبل وديO you who sever the cord of my love,
- يا قمرا مطلعه المغربO moon whose rising-place is the west,
- يا ليل طل لا أشتهيO night, grow long; I do not desire
- يا مخجل الغصن الفينان إن خطراO you who shame the luxuriant bough when it sways,
- يا مستخفا بعاشقيهO one who makes light of his lovers,
- يا معطشي من وصال كنت واردهO you who make me thirst for a union I once drank of,
- يا من تزينت الرياO you, through whom leadership was adorned
- يا من غدوت به في الناس مشتهراO you through whom I have become well known among people,
- يا نازحا وضمير القلب مثواهO distant one, yet dwelling in the heart's innermost depths,
- يا ناسيا لي على عرفانه تلفيO you who forget me, though you know I am perishing,
- يقصر قربك ليلي الطويلاYour nearness shortens my long night,
