أَرخَصتِنيyou cheapened me مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat أَغلَيتِنيyou prized me
وَحَطَطتِنيand you brought me low وَلَطالَماand so often أَعلَيتِنيyou raised me high
You cheapened me after you had prized me,
You set me free after imprisoning me
And brought me low, though you had so often raised me high.
And debased me though you had raised me high
بادَرتِنيyou acted swiftly against me بِالعَزلِwith dismissal عَنfrom خُطَطِposts الرِضىfavor
وَلَقَدand indeed مَحضتُI gave wholeheartedly النُصحَcounsel إِذwhen وَلَّيتِنيyou appointed me
You hastened to dismiss me from the posts of favor,
You were quick to remove me from the path of acceptance
And indeed I gave sincere counsel when you appointed me.
Though I offered you sincere advice when you turned from me
هَلّاwhy did you not وَقَدand already أَعلَقتِنيyou ensnared me شَرَكَsnare الهَوىlove
عَلَّلتِنيyou kept me hoping بِالوَصلِwith union أَوor سَلَّيتِنيyou helped me forget
Why did you not, having caught me in love's snare,
Why, when you had snared me in love’s trappings
Keep me hoping for union, or help me forget?
Did you not excuse me or let me be?
الصَبرُbitter aloe sap شَهدٌhoney عِندَماcompared with what جَرَّعتِنيyou made me swallow
وَالنارُand fire بَردٌcoolness عِندَماcompared with what أَصلَيتِنيyou made me burn
Bitter aloe is honey compared with what you made me swallow,
Patience is but anguish when you make me drink
And fire is cool compared with what you made me burn in.
And fire feels cold when you pray over me
كُنتِyou were المُنىcherished wishes فَأَذَقتِنيthen you made me taste غُصَصَchoking pangs الأَذىhurt
ياoh لَيتَنيif only I ماnot فُهتُI uttered فيكِabout you بِلَيتَنيwith 'if only I'
You were all I longed for; then you made me taste the choking pangs of hurt.
You were my wish yet made me taste heartache’s bitterness
Ah, if only I had never said of you, 'If only I...!'
Oh, would that I’d never understood you enough to love you!
