لَحاmay curse اللَهُGod يَوماًa day لَستُI am not فيهِon it بِمُلتَقِmeeting
مُحَيّاكِyour face مِنfor أَجلِthe sake of النَوىdistance وَالتَفَرُّقِand separation
May God curse a day when I do not see
God grant a day when we will meet again
your face because of distance and separation.
Though now we part for fate has struck its blow
وَكَيفَand how يَطيبُbecomes sweet العَيشُlife دونَwithout مَسَرَّةٍjoy
وَأَيُّand what سُرورٍjoy لِلكَئيبِfor the sorrowful one المُؤَرَّقِthe sleepless one
And how can life be sweet without joy?
How can life be sweet when severed from delight?
And what joy is there for the sorrowful, sleepless one?
What joy for him whose heart is pierced with woe?
