O you who shame the luxuriant bough when it sways,
O you who put to shame the bending bough if it but sway,
And put the drowsy gazelle fawn to shame when it gazes.
And who expose the gleaming teeth if they but smile,
يَفديكَmay he ransom you مِنّيfrom me مُحِبٌّa lover شَأنُهُhis state عَجَبٌa wonder
ماnot جِئتَyou committed بِالذَنبِa wrong إِلّاexcept جاءَhe came مُعتَذِراapologizing
May the lover in me ransom you; his ways are strange:
A lover ransoms you from me, strange his plight,
Never do you commit a wrong but he comes apologizing.
Yet he comes not to err, but rather to make amends.
لَمdid not يُنجِنيsave me مِنكَfrom you ماwhat استَشعَرتُI felt مِنof حَذَرٍcaution
هَيهاتَfar from it! كَيدُthe wiles الهَوىof love يَستَهلِكُconsume الحَذَراcaution
The caution I felt did not save me from you.
My wariness avails me naught 'gainst you,
In vain! Love's wiles consume caution.
Alas! Vain the wariness, when love decimates prudence.
ماnot كانَwas حُبُّكَlove for you إِلّاanything but فِتنَةًa trial قُدِرَتdecreed

Loving you was nothing but a trial decreed.
Your love was but an ordained affliction,
Can a young man ward off fate?
Can man thwart what is foreordained?
