ياO جائِرَunjust الحِكمِin judgment أَفديهِI would ransom him بِمَنwith one who عَدَلاacted justly
If your command were “Die,” my reply would not be “No.”
O unjust judge, whom I would ransom with one who is just!
أَبدَيتَyou showed ليto me مِنfrom أَفانينِvaried arts القِلىhatred عِبَراًlessons

You showed me lessons in the many arts of hatred,
Which made me a byword in the tales of love.
لَمnot تُبقِyou left جارِحَةًa limb بِالهَجرِthrough abandonment مِنof جَسَديmy body

Through abandonment, you left no limb of my body
Without clothing it in robes of wasting sickness.
فَليُغنِso let it suffice كَفَّكَyour hand أَنّيthat I am بَعضُone of مَنthose whom مَلَكَتit has possessed

So let your hand be content that I am among those it owns;
And let your gaze be content that I am among those it has slain.
وَلَتَقضِand decree ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنof هَجرٍestrangement وَمِنand of صِلَةٍunion

And decree what you wish—estrangement or union;
May I never, while I live, choose forgetfulness or weariness.

May rain bless those days with you, when the days presented me
With the face of joy, as I rejoiced in it and welcomed it.

When Time was eloquent in coming to my aid,
Bringing me the scattered parts of my wishes all together.
إِنif كانَthere is ليfor me أَمَلٌa hope إِلّاother than رِضاكَyour favor فَلاthen not

If I have any hope but your favor, then may I never
Be granted my hope in my lifetime, O my hope.
