أَأُجفىam I spurned بِلاwithout جُرمٍoffense وَأُقصىand am I cast aside بِلاwithout ذَنبِfault
سِوىexcept أَنَّنيthat I مَحضُpure الهَوىpassion صادِقُtrue in الحُبِّlove
Am I spurned without offense and cast aside without fault,
Except that I am pure in passion, true in love?
I come to you in the morning بِالشَكوىwith complaint فَأُضحيso I become عَلىsubject to القِلىaversion
وَأَرجوكَand I beseech you لِلعُتبىfor reconciliation فَأَظفَرُso I gain بِالعَتبِwith reproach
I come to you in the morning with my complaint, only to meet aversion;
And I beseech you for reconciliation, only to win reproach.
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom ماnot لِلماءِfor water عَذباًsweet عَلىamid الصَدىthirst
وَإِنand even if سُمتَنيyou subject me to خَسفاًhumiliation مَحَلُّكَyour place مِنin قَلبيmy heart
May I be your ransom! Sweet water in time of thirst does not have—
Even if you abase me—the place you hold in my heart.
وَلَولاكَand were it not for you ماضاقَتwould not have tightened حَشايَmy breast صَبابَةًlonging
جَعَلتُI have made قِراهاits welcome-feast الدَمعَtears سَكباًan outpouring عَلىupon سَكبِan outpouring
Were it not for you, my breast would not have tightened with longing,
For which I have made tears a welcome-feast, outpouring upon outpouring.
