أَتَهجُرُنيdo you forsake me? وَتَغصِبُنيand you rob me of كِتابيmy letter
وَماand not فيin الحَقِّjustice غَصبيrobbing me وَاجتِنابيand shunning me
Do you forsake me and rob me of my letter?
You spurn me and deny me your scripture,
And it is not just to rob me and shun me.
Though in truth I've done no wrong nor avoided you.
أَيَجمُلُis it fitting? أَنthat أُبيحَكَI freely offer you مَحضَpure وُدّيmy love
وَأَنتَwhile you تَسومُنيsubject me to سوءَcruel العَذابِtorment
Is it fitting that I freely offer you my pure love,
Is it fair that I profess my love so plainly
while you subject me to cruel torment?
While you treat me cruelly with torment?
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom كَمhow often تَغُضُّyou lower الطَرفَyour gaze دونيaway from me
وَكَمand how often أَدعوكَI call to you مِنfrom خَلفِbehind الحِجابِthe veil
May I be your ransom! How often you avert your gaze from me,
My life for you! How oft you turn from me,
and how often I call to you from behind the veil.
How oft I call you from behind the veil.
وَكَمand how often ليfor me مِنin فُؤادِكَyour heart بَعدَafter قُربٍcloseness
مَكانَthe place of الشَيبِgray hair فيin نَفسِthe soul of الكَعابِthe nubile maiden
And how often, after closeness, I hold in your heart
How far now is your heart that once was near,
the place gray hair holds in a young maiden's soul.
Like grey hair on a youthful head.
أَعِدreconsider فيconcerning عَبدِكَyour servant المَظلومِwronged رَأياًa judgment
تَنالُyou will gain بِهِthrough it الجَزيلَan abundant share مِنَof الثَوابِreward
Reconsider your judgment of your wronged servant;
Reconsider your mistreated servant -
through it you will gain abundant reward.
Thus you'll reap plentiful reward.
وَإِنand if تَبخَلyou withhold عَلَيهِfrom him فَرُبَّfor many a دَهرٍtime
وَهَبتَyou bestowed لَهُupon him رِضاكَyour favor بِلاwithout حِسابِreckoning
And if you withhold it from him, there was many a time
And if you're miserly toward him, many a day
when you bestowed your favor upon him without measure.
You've granted him your pleasure without account.
