Is there a rider leaving them who will greet me,

Since no letter reaches me to bring me back to life?

I have died, save for a last spark of life within me, sustained

By the hope my heart gives me of meeting them.

Nothing has set the tears free from my eye and released them

But the recurrence of sorrow imprisoned in the heart.

Patience! Perhaps the one who made me ill through distance

Will one day tend me with nearness and so heal me.

How can I endure, when in Kanun I was parted from

My heart—and here we are at the close of Tishrin?

One whose mouth and radiant brow are recalled to me

By the sun of day and the breaths of fragrant herbs.

Though I thirst for that sweet moisture of his lips, how often

Has he spent the night giving me drink of it and quenching my thirst!

And if a weeping woman's lament has made my tears flow,

How often I see him singing to me and stirring my sorrow!

And though I am far away and cares have worn me down, indeed

I remember him drawing me near and consoling me.

Or if his distance has undone the knot of my fortitude, how often

Have I untied the 'eighty' knot from his waist!

How lovely the glow of hours of closeness! They appeared

As stars in the black nights of his absence.

    وَإِنَّما الدَهرُ بِالمَكروهِ يَرميني

    By God, they did not part from me of their own choosing;

Rather, Time alone pelts me with misfortune.

    إِذاًّ تَبَدَّلتُ دينَ الكُفرِ مِن ديني

    Nor have I taken any love in place of my love for them;

Then I would have exchanged my faith for the creed of unbelief.

I would ransom the beloved who, were he able,

Would surely ransom me with his own life and family.

O Lord, bring our reunion near, with a happy outcome,

With a fortunate ascendant and birds of good omen.
