وَنَبَّهتَهُand awakened him إِذwhen هَداhe grew still فَاغتَمَضthen closed his eyes
You roused the lion of al-Shara as he lay crouched,
You aroused the feelings of the noble one as he rested,
and woke him when he had settled and closed his eyes.
And alerted him as he guided then shut his eyes.
وَماand not زِلتَyou ceased تَبسُطُyou extend مُستَرسِلاًunchecked

إِلَيهِtoward him يَدَthe hand البَغيَof aggression لَمّاwhen انقَبَضhe drew back
And you kept extending, unchecked,
You continued to extend the hand of tyranny to him
toward him the hand of aggression when he drew back.
Whenever it contracted with withdrawal.
حَذارِbeware حَذارِbeware فَإِنَّfor indeed الكَريمَthe noble man
إِذاwhen سيمَhe is subjected to خَسفاًhumiliation أَبىhe refuses فَاِمتَعَضand becomes indignant
Beware, beware! For the noble man,
Beware, beware, for the generous one,
when subjected to humiliation, refuses and grows indignant.
If he is extorted, refuses and is discontent.
فَإِنَّfor indeed سُكونَthe stillness الشُجاعِof the serpent النَهوسِthe fierce biter

لَيسَis not بِمانِعِهِa restraint upon it أَنthat يَعَضّit bite
For the stillness of the fiercely biting serpent
Verily, the stillness of the spirited, impetuous one
does not prevent it from biting.
Does not prevent him from biting.
وَإِنَّand indeed الكَواكِبَthe stars لاnot تُستَزَلُّare dislodged
وَإِنَّand indeed المَقاديرَfate's decrees لاnot تُعتَرَضare opposed
And the stars cannot be dislodged,
And verily the stars cannot be made to swerve,
and the decrees of fate cannot be opposed.
And verily what is destined cannot be averted.

When he is sought out, let the overreacher temper
When the spiller spills, let the spendthrift be moderate
endeavors beyond a pack-camel's reach.
In efforts that fall short of grasping.

And can one who draws deep water from its perennial spring
Can one who visits the deep sea in number
be matched by one who drains a scant trickle?
Be compared to one testing the shore?

If you face the sun with sore eyes,
When the sun faces you with bleary eyes,
your eyelids fare best by being lowered.
How fortunate for your eyelids to blink!
أَرىI see كُلَّevery مُجرٍracer أَباAbu عامِرٍAmir

I see every racer, Abu Amir,
I see every resolute father of honor
rejoice when he gallops in an empty field.
Delighted when alone he gallops.
I seek protection for you مِنfrom أَنthat تَرىyou see مِنزَعيmy bow's draw

إِذاwhen وَتَريmy bowstring بِالمَناياwith deaths انقَبَضis drawn taut
I pray you be spared the sight of my bow's draw,
I seek refuge for you from seeing any weakness in me
when my bowstring is drawn taut with death.
When the appointing of death contracts.
فَإِنّيfor I أَلينُam gentle لِمَنto whoever لانَis gentle ليwith me

For I am gentle with whoever is gentle with me,
For I am gentle to whoever is gentle to me
and leave whoever seeks to coerce me wasting away.
And I abandon whoever sought my forced submission.
وَكَمand how many حَرَّكَstirred العُجبُself-conceit مِنof حائِنٍa doomed man

And how many a doomed man has pride stirred,
How much pride did the treacherous one stir up in me,
whom I then left without a single pulse.
Yet I left him, along with his twisted ways!
أَباAbu عامِرٍAmir أَينَwhere ذاكَthat الوَفاءُfidelity
إِذِwhen الدَهرُTime وَسنانُdrowsy وَالعَيشُand life غَضّfresh
Abu Amir, where is that fidelity,
Tell me, did I not exert myself, rising
when Time was drowsy and life was fresh?
To bear the burdens of your righteousness upon those who rose?
وَأَينَand where الَّذيthat which كُنتَyou used to تَعتَدُّreckon مِنin

And where is what you once deemed, in
Did the scent of my courtesy not exude a fragrance
befriending me, a duty imposed upon you?
You deemed to be precious incense that pours forth?
تَشوبُyou taint وَأَمحَضُand I keep pure مُستَبقِياًseeking to preserve
وَهَيهاتَand far apart are مَنone who شابَtainted مِمَّنfrom one who مَحَضkept pure
You taint it; I keep it pure, seeking to preserve it.
Were you not made happy by my noble manners,
And how far apart are those who taint and those who keep pure!
Strolling to a meadow that made you laugh?
أَبِنmake clear ليto me أَلَمdid ... not? أَضطَلِعI shoulder ناهِضاًrising
بِأَعباءِwith the burdens of بِرِّكَkindness toward you فيمَنamong those who نَهَضrose
Tell me plainly: did I not rise to shoulder
Were it not for our special bond, I would not have cared
the burdens of kindness toward you among those who rose?
For your condition, whether of health or sickness.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَنشَyou inhale مِنfrom أَدَبيmy literary art نَفحَةًa fragrance
حَسِبتَyou thought بِهاthrough it المِسكَmusk طيباًa perfume يُفَضّbeing unsealed
Did you not inhale a fragrance from my literary art,
No joy from loyalty came over me,
which you took for musk, a perfume freshly unsealed?
No sorrow from estrangement pained me.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَكُyou were مِنthrough شيمَتيmy character غادِياًgoing forth at dawn
إِلىto تُرَعٍbrimming pools ضاحَكَتهاsmiled at them فُرَضwater-inlets
Did you not, through my nature, go forth at dawn
The young man is honored when the cool, sweet drink
to brimming pools greeted by smiling inlets?
Offers him a draft that quenched his thirst.
وَلَولاand but for اختِصاصُكَyour favored status لَمnot أَلتَفِتI would have heeded
لِحالَيكَto your two states مِنof صِحَّةٍhealth أَوor مَرَضsickness
And had I not singled you out, I would not have heeded
You set upon my poetry but did not repent,
your two states, health or sickness.
Matching its essence with superficiality.
وَلاand not عادَنيvisited me مِنfrom وَفاءٍfidelity سُرورٌjoy
وَلاand not نالَنيreached me لِجَفاءٍbecause of estrangement مَضَضpain
Nor would joy from fidelity have visited me,
Have the styles of this ode narrowed,
nor pain from estrangement have reached me.
Or has its design vanished and become extinct?
يَعِزُّis difficult اِعتِصارُrelief by drinking الفَتىof the young man وارِداًcoming to drink
إِذاwhen البارِدُthe cool water العَذبُthe sweet أَهدىbrought الجَرَضchoking
Hard is relief by drinking for a young man coming to water,
By my life, you have surpassed the arrow of struggle
when cool, sweet water itself brings choking.
And would have hit the target if you had aimed for the goal.
عَمَدتَyou targeted لِشِعريmy poetry وَلَمand did not تَتَّئِبfeel shame
تُعارِضُyou pit against جَوهَرَهُits substance بِالعَرَضwith accident
You targeted my poetry without shame,
You have rolled up your sleeves for plunging into an abyss,
pitting mere accident against its substance.
Which is an ocean whose coast has not been explored.
أَضاقَتhave ... narrowed? أَساليبُthe paths هَذاof this القَريضِpoetry
أَمor قَدalready عَفاfaded رَسمُهُits trace فَاِنقَرَضand died out
Have the paths of this poetry narrowed,
A mirage presented itself to you from a covenant of birth,
or has its trace faded, so that it has died out?
Flickering lightning that flashed then disappeared.
لَعَمريby my life لَفَوَّقتَyou surely nocked سَهمَthe arrow النِضالِof archery contest
وَأَرسَلتَهُand you loosed it لَوif only أَصَبتَyou had hit الغَرَضthe target
By my life, you surely nocked the arrow of contest,
You assume loyalty in it while assumptions
and loosed it—if only you had hit the target!
Speak against those who took it as duty.
وَشَمَّرتَand you girded yourself لِلخَوضِfor wading فيin لُجَّةٍdeep water
هِيَit is البَحرُthe sea ساحِلُهاits shore لَمnot يُخَضwas waded
And you girded yourself to wade into deep water
It is the water that refuses the gripper
that is the sea, whose shore has never been waded.
And prevents its foam from being ladled.
وَغَرَّكَand deceived you مِنfrom عَهدِthe pledge of وَلّادَةٍWallada
سَرابٌa mirage تَراءىappeared وَبَرقٌand lightning وَمَضflashed
And you were deceived in Wallada's pledge by
I informed her of my secret inclination toward you
a mirage that appeared and lightning that flashed.
For a purpose that was obscured and vague.
تَظُنُّyou suppose الوَفاءَfidelity بِهاin her وَالظُنونُand suppositions
فيهاabout her تَقولُspeak عَلىagainst مَنwhoever فَرَضhas assumed
You suppose her faithful, but such suppositions
Abu Amir, take a stumble as independence
about her speak against whoever makes them.
So you may sever what soured of our love.
هِيَshe is الماءُwater يَأبىrefuses عَلىto قابِضٍone who grasps
وَيَمنَعُand denies زُبدَتَهُits butter مَنwhoever مَخَضchurns
She is water that eludes whoever grasps it,
Do not cling to an error with argument,
and denies its butter to whoever churns.
Rather, many arguments have been refuted.
وَنُبِّئتُهاand I was told she بَعدِيَafter me اِستُحمِدَتsought praise

And I was told that, after me, she sought to win favor
Otherwise, the armies of reproach will assail you
by revealing my secret to you, for an obscure purpose.
Stubbornly with biting and stabbing remarks.
أَباAbu عامِرٍAmir عَثرَةًa stumble فَاِستَقِلso seek pardon
لِتُبرِمَso you may bind firmly مِنof وُدِّناour affection ماwhat اِنتَفَضhas unraveled
Abu Amir, you stumbled; seek pardon,
And warn your friend of the expert one
to bind firm what has unraveled of our affection.
With madness’ cure if it presents itself.
وَلاand do not تَعتَصِمtake refuge ضَلَّةًmisguidedly بِالحِجاجِin argument
وَسَيِّمand yield فَرُبَّfor many an اِحتِجاجٍargument دُحِضwas refuted
And do not, misguidedly, take refuge in argument;
A guarantor for collecting heavy taxes,
and yield, for many an argument has been refuted.
Bold in slicing a throbbing vein.
وَإِلّاand otherwise اِنتَحَتكَwill make for you جُيوشُthe armies العِتابِof reproach
مُناجِزَةًengaging in battle فيwith قَضيضٍthe great وَقَضّand the small
Otherwise, armies of reproach will march upon you,
He takes the branding iron before the bandage
ready to fight, great and small alike.
And stings with poison instead of poultices.
وَأَنذِرand warn خَليلَكَyour friend مِنof ماهِرٍone skilled
بِطِبِّin treating الجُنونِmadness إِذاwhen ماever عَرَضit appears
And warn your friend of one skilled
Inform him I have lamented having no substitute
in treating madness whenever it appears:
And let him know I have sought a replacement.
كَفيلٌone guaranteeing بِبَطِّto lance خُراجٍan abscess عَساgrown hard

جَريءٌbold عَلىto شَقِّslit عِرقٍa vein نَبَضthat throbs
one who guarantees to lance an abscess grown hard,
Thus, my watering place is not for his camels to drink
bold to slit a throbbing vein.
Nor my resting place for his sheep to graze.
يُبادِرُhe hastens بِالكَيِّto cauterize قَبلَbefore الضَمادِbandaging
وَيُسعِطُand doses the nostrils بِالسَمِّwith poison لاnot بِالحُضَضwith lycium extract
He hastens to cauterize before bandaging,
Verily, the hand of separation is appreciated
and doses the nostrils with poison, not lycium extract.
For removing dishonor and erasing stains.
وَأَشعِرُهُand inform him أَنّيthat I اِنتَحَبتُI chose البَديلَthe replacement
وَأُعلِمهُand tell him أَنّيthat I اِستَجَدتُI found excellent العِوَضthe substitute
And inform him that I have chosen a replacement,
It is enough that I gained success
and tell him that I have found a worthy substitute.
In clarifying and revealing the separation.
فَلاso not مَشرَبيmy drink لِقِلاهُbecause of his disdain أَمَرَّgrew bitter
وَلاand not مَضجَعيmy bed لِنَواهُbecause of his departure أَقَضّgrew uncomfortable
So my drink has not grown bitter from his disdain,
Fortunate are you, my master,
nor has my bed grown uneasy from his departure.
That you have become equal to that sublime position.
وَإِنَّand indeed يَدَthe hand البَينِof separation مَشكورَةٌis thanked
لِعارٍfor a disgrace أَماطَit removed وَوَصمٍand a stain رَحَضit washed away
And indeed, the hand of separation deserves thanks,
for a disgrace it removed and a stain it washed away.
وَحَسبِيَand enough for me أَنّيthat I أَطَبتُI made sweet الجَنىthe fruit harvest
لِإِبّانِهِin its season وَأَبَحتُand I made freely available النَفَضthe fallen fruit
And enough for me that I made the harvest sweet
in its season, and made the fallen fruit free for all.
وَيَهنيكَand may it gladden you أَنَّكَthat you ياO سَيِّديmy lord

And may it gladden you, my lord, that you
have become that woman's companion.
