Such is Time: endure what Time has brought about.

For patience in such a trial is among the virtues of the righteous.

    فَلا تَرضَ بِالصَبرِ الَّذي مَعَهُ وِزرُ

    You will endure, either in despair or in hope of divine reward;

so do not choose the patience that carries sin.

Beware lest bereavement give rise to a temptation

for which one of your character can find no excuse.

When bereavement grieves a wise man and wears him away,

he sees the harsher of the two losses in forfeiting his reward.

The mourner's affliction at the death of his reward

is the true anguish—not the dead one whom the grave encloses.

    لَهُم فيهِ إيضاعٌ كَما يوضِعُ السَفرُ

    Human life is a broad, open road to death;

people hasten along it as travelers hasten.

O guide of the way, you have strayed; for only

dawn—or dire calamity—guides you to the straight path.

We have a lesson in others, yet we

are lured by the promises of wishes and let ourselves be deceived.

If death is the final limit of every long-lived soul,

then it matters not whether life is long or short.

Have you not seen religion's sacred domain thrown into terror,

with neither numerous defenders nor wealth availing?

Where sovereignty rose, proudly turning its flank,

and the vast army dragged its trailing skirts.

This is an outrage: had anyone but fate sought to inflict it,

the difficult goal and rugged road would have defeated him,

when sleek, swimming-strided steeds stumble among the spears,

in a night of dust that no dawn can cleave.

Indeed, the death-announcer came early to us with a summons

heard before, yet piercing us with a grief newborn.

Has death struck down the most precious soul among humankind,

and Time destroyed the dearest treasure of right guidance?

May the earth's belly delight in its renewed companionship

with a woman who settled there, leaving its surface lonely:

pure of robes, enchanting the morning light,

her hours filled with praise, her secluded chamber her prayer niche.

    إِذِ الجِسمُ لا يَسمو لِتَذكيرِهِ ذِكرُ

    If she was female, the soul is a precious female [apparent reading; text unclear];

for the body gains no renown from its masculine designation.

Chaste—if piety held sole sway over her inner life,

her outward virtue was made clear by righteous deeds.

The curtain of modesty bows low before her veil,

and the covering is lifted from her voluntary prayers offered in pairs.

By the life of the white robes in that soil,

green blessings have indeed been wrapped within their folds.

God's peace be upon her, greeting following greeting,

its fresh basil wafting forgiveness to her.

And may a cloud's renewing rain revisit that earth:

when it sheds tears upon her soil, the flowers smile.

May we be your ransom! The bereavement was indeed a cloud

in which you rose before us as the full moon rises.

Are you not the one who, when calamity strains endurance,

has a face that shines forth and a breast that opens wide?

    فَمِن دونِها في العَصرِ يَتبَعُهُ العَصرُ

    Take comfort in Eve, whose children are all humankind;

then after her, through age followed by age,

the wives of the chosen Prophet, our mothers,

died, and their dwelling has lain deserted for ages.

You repaid her with goodness: a tender mother

cherished by a son whose every deed is filial piety.

She wished to die while you still lived, after

her scattered hopes followed one another like beads strung on a necklace.

As though death were a binding vow upon her,

once she was granted good fortune in you, the vow was fulfilled.

She departed, leaving from her answered prayers

precious stores that no treasure can equal.

Through this, blessing is completed and hopes fall into harmony,

and affliction is warded off and patience welcomed.

So let not the world break your wing after her,

for you mend those whom its calamities have broken.

May you ever be strong in numbers, a joy

to your eyes, with that strength firmly sustained by them.

    لَعافيكُمُ في أُفقِها أَنجُمٌ زُهرُ

    Sons of Jahwar, you are a sky of leadership;

for those seeking your bounty, its horizon has radiant stars.

    وَإِن تَضحَكِ الدُنيا فَأَنتُم لَها ثَغرُ

    You see Time: when it strikes, its right hand is from you;

and when the world laughs, you are its smiling mouth.

Among you is every man of shimmering generosity, as though he were

a keen sword bearing a trace of his cheerful openness.

Clouds of blessing flash and pour forth:

their downpour is bounty, their lightning good cheer.

When you are mentioned and your qualities discerned,

the reports breathe fragrance, and firsthand knowledge gains glory.

    وَنائِلُكُم غَمرٌ وَمَذهَبُكُم قَصرُ

    Your way is exemplary, your conduct pleasing;

your bounty is abundant, your manner restrained.

Many a questioner about you in your absence have I answered:

There, favors come in pairs, and preeminence is unmatched:

giving without reproach, judgment without caprice,

forbearance without weakness, might without arrogance.

Through you, blessing has attained its fullness

upon us; so from us come praise and thanks to God.
