Our bygone night was sweet to us;
Our empty night has been delightful,
so let this next one make us forget it.
So let this next night make us forget it.
أَباO father of المَعاليlofty honors نَحنُwe فيin راحَةٍease
فَانقُلso bring إِلَيناto us القَدَمَthe foot العالِيَهnoble
O Abu al-Ma‘ali, we are at ease;
O father of greatness, we are at leisure-
so bring your noble foot to us.
Come to us on your exalted feet.
لَيلَتُناour night عاطِلَةٌunadorned إِنif تَغِبyou are absent
عَنّاfrom us فَزُرناso visit us كَيso that تُرىit may be seen حالِيَهadorned
Our night is unadorned if you are absent
Our night is wasted if you are absent-
from us; so visit us, that it may appear adorned.
Visit us, that you may see our state.
أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one who لَوif تُشتَرىwere bought ساعَةٌan hour

You are the one—if an hour were bought
You, if an hour with you were bought
from him for an age, it would not be too dear.
With an age, it would not be too great.
