أَعَرفُكِis it your fragrance? راحَwafted فيin عُرفِthe fragrance of الرِياحِthe winds
فَهَزَّand stirred مِنَthrough الهَوىlove عِطفَthe flank of اِرتِياحيmy delight
Was it your scent that wafted in the winds' fragrance,
I know you went with the winds at dawn
and stirred, through love, the flank of my delight?
And passion stirred my spirit’s ease
وَذِكرُكِand remembrance of you ماwhat تَعَرَّضَappeared أَمor عَذابٌa torment
غَصِصتُI choked عَلَيهِover it بِالعَذبِon sweet water القَراحِpure
And was it remembrance of you that appeared, or a torment
Thoughts of you came unbidden like affliction
over which I choked on sweet, pure water?
I suppressed them with patience bittersweet
وَهَلand am ...? أَناI مِنكِfrom you فيin نَشَواتِraptures of شَوقٍlonging
هَفَتcarried away بِالعَقلِwith the mind أَوor نَشَواتِraptures of راحِwine
And am I, because of you, in raptures of longing
In transports of longing, am I really yours?
that swept my reason away, or in raptures of wine?
Rapt in mind, or just rapt for relief?
لَعَمرُby the life of هَواكِlove for you ماnot وَرِيَتsparked زِنادٌfire-sticks
لِوَصلٍfor union مِنكِfrom you طالَlasted long لَهاfor them اِقتِداحيmy striking sparks
By the life of my love for you, no fire-sticks have sparked
By your love, never has flint sparked flame
for union with you, though long I have struck them.
To join us though long I've pined
وَكَمand how many أَسقَمتِyou sickened مِنof قَلبٍa heart صَحيحٍhealthy
بِسُقمِwith the sickness of جُفونِكِyour eyelids المَرضىailing الصِحاحِhealthy
And how many a healthy heart have you sickened
How many healthy hearts you've made sick
with the sickness of your eyelids, ailing yet sound!
With the illness of your ailing eyelids
مَتىwhenever أُخفِI hide الغَرامَpassion يَصِفهُdescribes it جِسميmy body
بِأَلسِنَةِwith the tongues of الضَنىwasting الخُرسِmute الفِصاحِeloquent
Whenever I hide my passion, my body describes it
When can I hide this love described by my form
with the tongues of wasting, mute yet eloquent.
In dumb longing's mute tongues so eloquent?
فَلَوso if أَنَّthat الثِيابَthe garments فُحِصنَwere searched عَنّيfor me
خَفيتُI would be hidden خَفاءَlike the concealment of خَصرِكِyour waist فيin الوِشاحِthe sash
Were my garments searched for me,
If my clothes were searched and taken
I would be hidden as your waist is hidden in its sash.
I'd hide as your waist hides in its sash
لَلُقّيناwe were indeed afflicted مِنَby الواشينِthe slanderers حَتّىuntil
رَضيناwe accepted الرُسلَas messengers أَنفاسَthe breaths of الرِياحِthe winds
We were so afflicted by the slanderers that
We'd meet safe from gossip until
we accepted the winds' breaths as messengers.
Messengers were satisfied with the winds
وَرُبَّand many a ظَلامِdarkness of لَيلٍa night جَنَّclosed in فَوقيover me
فَنُبتِand you took the place عَنِof الصَباحِdawn إِلىuntil الصَباحِdawn
And many a night's darkness closed over me,
How many dark nights spawned over me
and you took dawn's place until dawn.
To bloom from dusk till dawn rose again
فَهَلthen did ...? عَدَتِoverstepped العَفافَchastity هُناكَthere نَفسيmy soul
فَدَيتُكِmay I ransom you أَوor جَنَحتُI inclined إِلىtoward الجُناحِsin
Then did my soul there overstep chastity,
Did my soul there find chastity once more
may I be your ransom—or did I incline toward sin?
Or wing its way to wings anew?
وَكَيفَand how أَلِجُّI persist stubbornly لاnot يَثنيturns back عِنانيmy rein
رَشادُthe wisdom of العَزمِresolve عَنaway from غَيِّthe folly of الجِماحِrunning wild
And how could I persist, my rein not turned back
How could I spur on though resolution
by wise resolve from the folly of running wild?
Restrains me from dangerous folly?
وَمِنand from سِرِّthe inner nature of اِبنِIbn (son of) عَبّادٍAbbad دَليلٌa guide

And from Ibn Abbad's inner nature comes a guide
In the Secret of the Son of Abbad a clue
by which corruption is distinguished from righteousness.
Wherein corruption from virtue is seen
هُوَhe المَلِكُthe king الَّذيwho بَرَّتwere upright فَسَرَّتand so gladdened

He is the king whose upright and gladdening
He is the King whose nature pure
qualities are pure in every aspect.
Radiance flows, facets untainted

A magnanimous man who, with soaring ambitions, marked out
High minded, who aimed for the highest
spacious domains upon the heights of glory.
Of the noble, in plans most expansive

Radiant, when the face of time grows grim,
Dazzling when fate frowned till his face
he shines within it like the gleaming moon.
Shone like the radiant friendly moon

أَصَمُّdeaf الجودِin generosity عَنto تَفنيدِthe reproach of لاحِa censurer
His aid is attentive to a neighbor's appeal for redress;
Hearing aid for neighbors’ distress
his bounty is deaf to a censurer's reproach.
Deaf to undoing a rival's stitch

بِأَخلاقٍby manners لَدىat العُتبىreconciliation مِلاحِgracious
Stern dispositions in reproach are followed
Stern in reproach, yet gentle at fault
by gracious manners in reconciliation.
Courteous, when the blamed reproach
إِذاwhen أَرِجَbecame fragrant الثَناءُpraise الرَوعُsplendid مِنهاfrom them

When splendid praise wafts fragrance from them,
When praise flows, how much finer than musk
then how often musk is put to shame by it!
Its redolence, no shame laid bare
هُوَhe المُبقيthe one leaving مُلوكَthe kings of الأَرضِthe earth تَدمىbleeding
قُلوبُهُمُtheir hearts كَأَفواهِlike the mouths of الجِراحِwounds
He leaves the kings of the earth with bleeding
He who keeps kings alive though bloodied
hearts, like the mouths of wounds.
Their hearts like mouths of wounds
رَآهُsaw him اللَهُGod أَجوَدَmost generous بِالعَطاياwith gifts
وَأَطعَنَand most piercing بِالمَكايِدِwith stratagems وَالرِماحِand spears
God found him the most generous with gifts,
God saw his surpassing munificence
and most piercing with stratagems and spears,
And piercing ruses and spears
وَأَفرَسَand most masterful لِلمَنابِرِon pulpits وَالمَذاكيand seasoned steeds
وَأَبهىand most splendid فيin البُرودِstriped cloaks وَفيand in السِلاحِarms
and most masterful on pulpits and seasoned steeds,
Foremost on pulpits, in councils, and war
and most splendid in striped cloaks and in arms,
Most splendid armored or armed
وَأَمنَعَهُمand most protective among them حِمىthe sanctuary of عِرضٍhonor مَصونٍguarded
وَأَوسَعَهُمand broadest among them ذُراthe heights of مالٍwealth مُباحِfreely available
and the strongest of them in protecting the sanctuary of guarded honor,
Securest protector of honor immaculate
and the broadest of them in the heights of wealth open to all.
Vastest in freely given wealth
فَراضَso He subdued لَهُfor him الوَرىmankind حَتّىuntil تَأَدَّتwas delivered
إِلَيهِto him إِتاوَةُthe tribute of الحَيِّthe tribe اللِقاحِindependent
So He subdued mankind for him, until there came
The world bows till tributes from all
to him the tribute of the independent tribe,
Are laid before him in plenty
لِمُعتَضِدٍfor Mu'tadid (one seeking support) بِهِon Him أَرضاهُhe pleased Him سَعياًby striving
فَأَقبَلَso He turned وَجهَهُhis face وَجهَin the direction of الفَلاحِsuccess
for Mu'tadid, reliant on Him, who pleased Him by his striving;
For Mu'tadid, he strove to please
so He turned his face toward success.
So his face shone with success
فَمَنso whoever قاسَcompared المُلوكَthe kings إِلَيهِto him جَهلاًignorantly
كَمَنlike one who قاسَcompared النُجومَthe stars إِلىto بَراحِBarah (the sun)
So whoever ignorantly compares kings to him
To compare kings to him in ignorance
is like one who compares the stars to Barah, the sun.
Is like equating stars to fleas
وَمُعتَقِدُand one believing in الرِياسَةِsovereignty فيin سِواهُsomeone other than him
كَمُعتَقِدِlike one believing in النُبُوَّةِprophethood فيin سَجاحِSajah
And one who believes sovereignty lies in anyone other than him
To believe the caliphate lies in another
is like one who believes prophethood lies in Sajah.
Is like claiming prophethood for fools
أَبَحرَO sea of الجودِgenerosity فيon يَومِthe day of العَطاياgifts

O sea of generosity on the day of gifts,
Ocean of generosity on days of giving
and lion of might on the day of combat!
Lion of might on days of strife
لَقَدindeed سَفَرَتunveiled بِعِلَّتِكَthrough your illness اللَياليthe nights

The nights, through your illness, have indeed unveiled
Nights travelled with your affliction
to us the face of a brazen calamity.
Revealing shameless misfortune
أَلَستَare you not? مُصِحَّهاtheir healer مِنof كُلِّevery داءٍillness

Are you not the one who cures them of every sickness,
Are you not the one who cures all malady
and reveals the beauty of their lovely faces?
Displaying its best face in dawn?
وَلَوand if كَشَفَتthey unveiled عَنِfrom الصَفَحاتِthe cheeks شامَتthey beheld

And were they to bare their cheeks, they would behold
Had defeats unveiled their pages
death's lightning from white sword-blades.
Death lights would gleam from drawn swords
وَقاكَmay He protect you اللَهُGod ماwhat تَخشىyou fear وَوالىand keep bestowing

May God protect you from what you fear, and keep showering
May God protect you from all fear
His favor upon you, morning and evening.
And support you with lasting wellbeing

And if good fortune had granted us
If fortune had allowed us lawfully
her trade, ever yielding profits,
To profit from its lucrative trade
تَجافَيناwe would relinquish عَبيدَكَyour servants عَنaway from نُفوسٍsouls
عَلَيكَfor you مِنَfrom الضَنىanguish حَرّىburning شِحاحِjealously protective
we, your servants, would have surrendered our souls,
We'd shun souls full of resentment for you
burning with anguish for you and unwilling to lose you.
Though ardent stinginess sears the cheat
تُهَنَّأُthey are congratulated فيكَon your account بِالبُرءِon recovery المُوَفّىcomplete

They are congratulated on your complete recovery,
To exult in innocence fulfilled in you
and gladdened by your pain's removal.
And delight in pain turned to jest through you
فَدَيتُكَmay I ransom you كَمhow much لِعَينِيَfor my eye مِنof سُمُوٍّrising

May I be your ransom! How high my eye rises
My dear, how my eyes rise so high with you
in your presence, and how high my soul aspires!
How my soul aspires and vaunts
أَلاah! هَلhas ...? جاءَreached مَنthose whom فارَقتُI parted from أَنّيthat I

Ah, has word reached those I parted from that I
Oh, has any come saying I am
roam freely in the courtyards of wishes,
Reveling in the Abode of Bliss?
وَأَنّيand that I مِنfrom ظِلالِكَyour shade فيin زَمانٍa time
and that, beneath your shade, I live in a time
That I, in your shadows through time
dewy in its late afternoons, shimmering in its sunlit hours?
Call the nests, the groves, mellifluous
تُحَيِّينيyou greet me بِرَيحانِwith the sweet basil of التَحَفّيwarm attentiveness
وَتُصبِحُنيand gives me a morning draught مُعَتَّقَةُthe aged wine of السَماحِgenerosity
You greet me with the sweet basil of warm attention,
You greet me with aromatic joy
and generosity's aged wine is my morning draught.
And awaken me, forgiving and kind
فَهاso here أَناI قَدalready ثَمِلتُhave become drunk مِنَon الأَياديbenefactions
إِذِas اِتَّصَلَjoined اِغتِباقيmy evening drinking فيinto اِصطِباحيmy morning drinking
So here I am, already drunk on favors,
When my embrace reunites us in morn
as my evening draught merges with my morning draught.
If I fall short, then good advice is enough
فَإِنso if أَعجِزI fall short فَإِنَّthen indeed النُصحَsincere devotion ثَقفٌdiscerning
وَإِنand if أَشكُرI give thanks فَإِنَّthen indeed الشُكرَgratitude صاحِsober
So if I fall short, my devotion is discerning;
If I thank, then thanks is best said
and if I give thanks, my gratitude is sober,
For what you have made my fate sublime
لِماfor what أَكسَبتَyou bestowed قَدريmy standing مِنof سَناءٍsplendor
وَماand what لَقَّيتَyou made encounter سَعييmy striving مِنof نَجاحِsuccess
for the splendor you have bestowed upon my standing,
And what my endeavor you have blessed
and the success you have granted my striving.
You granted my hopes decisive decree
لَقَدindeed أَنفَذتَyou enforced فيin الآمالِhopes حُكميmy decree
وَأَجرَيتَand you made run الزَمانَtime عَلىaccording to اِقتِراحيmy wishes
You have indeed made my decree prevail in the realm of hopes,
And time flowed by my design
and made time run according to my wishes.
What loss need I dread without fortune
وَهَلand should ...? أَخشىI fear وُقوعاًfalling دونَshort of حَظٍّgood fortune
إِذاwhen ماindeed أُثَّgrew thick ريشُكَyour plumage مِنfrom جَناحيmy wing
And should I fear falling short of good fortune
If your wing shoos me on my way?
when your plumage has grown thick on my wing?
No rain parching, no flint miserly
فَماfor not اِستَسقَيتُI sought rain مِنfrom غَيمٍa cloud جَهامٍrainless
وَلاnor اِستَورَيتُI sought a spark مِنfrom زَندٍa fire-stick شَحاحِgrudging
For I have not sought rain from a rainless cloud,
Your kindness remained when I strayed
nor sought a spark from a grudging fire-stick.
Your beauty attends my setting
وَواصَلَنيand stayed with me جَميلُكَyour kindness فيduring مَغيبيmy absence
وَطالَعَنيand reached me نَداكَyour bounty مَعَdespite اِنتِزاحيmy remoteness
And your kindness stayed with me in my absence,
Your closeness rises as I take leave
and your bounty reached me despite my distance.
I'll never stop being your lovesick hostage
وَلَمand not أَنفَكُّI ceased إِذwhen عَدَتِassailed العَواديadversities
إِلَيكَto you رَهينَbound by شَوقٍlonging وَاِلتِياحِand ardent yearning
And I never ceased, when adversities assailed,
Yearning, contented, pacified in you
to be bound to you in longing and ardent yearning.
You suffice as sole source of my bounty
فَحَسبيَso enough for me أَنتَyou مِنas مُسدٍa bestower لِنُعمىof blessings
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you بيin me بِشُكرٍwith gratitude وَاِمتِداحِand praise
So you suffice me as a bestower of blessings,
And I suffice thanking and praising you
and I suffice you in gratitude and praise.
