To al-Thaghab al-Shahdi, the honey-sweet pool, a greeting from me:
may it flourish; and peace upon Wadi al-Aqiq.
وَلازالَand may there always be نورٌblossoms فيin الرَصافَةِal-Rusafa ضاحِكٌsmiling

And may the blossoms in al-Rusafa keep smiling,
while clouds weep over them throughout its grounds.

Haunts of pleasure, beneath whose shade
wine never ceased to pass among us for revelry.
زَمانَin the days when رِياضُgardens العَيشِof life خُضرٌgreen نَواضِرٌfresh
تَرِفَّswayed وَأَمواهُand the waters السُرورِof joy جِمامُbrim-full
In days when life's gardens were green and fresh,
swaying, while the waters of joy were brim-full.
فَإِنand if بانَdeparted مِنّيfrom me عَهدُهاits days فَبِلَوعَةٍthen with burning longing
يَشُبُّflares up لَهاfor it بَينَbetween الضُلوعِthe ribs ضِرامُa blaze
And if my days there have left me, I ache with longing,
whose blaze flares up between my ribs.
تَذَكَّرتُI remembered أَيّاميmy days بِهاin it فَتَبادَرَتand rushed forth
دُموعٌtears كَماas when خانَbetrayed الفَريدَthe pearls نِظامُa string
I remembered my days there, and there came rushing
tears, as when a string betrays its pearls.
وَصُحبَةُand the company of قَومٍmen كَالمَصابيحِlike lamps كُلُّهُمeach of them
إِذاwhen هُزَّwas brandished لِلخَطبِagainst calamity المُلِمِّbesetting حُسامُa keen sword
And the company of men like lamps, each one
a keen sword when brandished against besetting calamity.
إِذاwhen طافَwent round بِالراحِwith wine المُديرِthe cupbearer عَلَيهِمُamong them
أَطافَgathered بِهِaround him بيضُfair الوُجوهِof face كِرامُnoble men
When the cupbearer went round among them with wine,
fair-faced, noble men gathered around him.
وَأَحوَرُand a dark-eyed one ساجيlanguid الطَرفِof gaze حَشوُthe filling of جُفونِهِhis eyelids
سَقامٌlanguor بَرىwasted الأَجسامَbodies مِنهُfrom him سَقامُa sickness
And a dark-eyed one, languid of gaze, whose eyelids held
a languor—a sickness from him that wasted bodies.
تَخالُyou would think قَضيبَa slender bough البانِof the ban-tree فيin طَيِّthe folds of بُردِهِhis cloak
إِذاwhenever اهتَزَّswayed مِنهُof him مَعطِفٌa flank وَقَوامُand a figure
You would think a ban-tree bough lay within his folded cloak,
whenever his waist and figure swayed.

سُلافاًchoice wine كَأَنَّas though المِسكَmusk مِنهُof it خِتامُa seal
He passes round, in spite of foes, from his love
a pure vintage, as though musk were its seal.
فَمِنso for أَجلِهِhis sake أَدعوI pray لِقُرطُبَةِfor Córdoba المُنىof dreams

So, for his sake, I pray for Córdoba of my dreams
to be watered with gentle dew—fine, steady rain.
مَحَلٌّa place غَنَّيناwe sang بِالتَصابيin youthful play خِلالَهُwithin it
فَأَسعَدَناso it gladdened us وَالحادِثاتُwhile misfortunes نِيامُasleep
A place where we sang in youthful play,
and it made us happy while misfortunes slept.
فَماso no لَحَقَتtouched تِلكَthose اللَياليnights مَلامَةٌblame
وَلاnor ذُمَّwas faulted مِنfrom ذاكَthat الحَبيبِbeloved ذِمامُa pledge of loyalty
So no blame ever touched those nights,
nor was that beloved's loyalty ever faulted.
