Say to Abu Hafs—and you will not be lying—

O moon of the council and the procession:

What ails Abu Safwan, our familiar friend,

that his friendship flashes lightning but brings no rain?

And he has returned only with the caution

of an eavesdropper dodging a shooting star.

Rebuke him, by God, for his conduct,

and revile him; if he will not mend his ways, strike him.

And pass him tawny wine cooled by the north wind,

whose sunrise he sees in the west.

And let him drink the greater part of his cup,

and turn to his leavings, then drink.

    A punishment—what a fine precedent

for a handsome offender like him!

Seek pleasure together at dawn, and go to it at dusk,

for you two live in pleasant times.
