قُلsay لِلوَزيرِto the minister وَقَدand indeed قَطَعتُI spent بِمَدحِهِin praising him
زَمَنيmy time فَكانَand so was السِجنُprison مِنهُfrom him ثَوابيmy reward
Tell the minister—I spent in praising him
Say to the minister, though I spent my time
My time, and prison was my reward from him:
Praising him, and prison was my reward,
لاdo not تَخشَfear فيin حَقّيmy case بِماbecause of what أَمضَيتَهُyou decreed it
مِنof ذاكَthat فِيَّagainst me وَلاand do not تَوَقَّbe wary of عِتابيmy reproach
Do not fear, on my account, because of what you decreed
"Fear not my right, nor cease to reprove
Against me in that matter, nor dread my reproach.
What you did to me; blame not yourself."
لَمdid not تُخطِyou miss فيin أَمريmy case الصَوابَthe right course مُوَفَّقاًrightly guided
هَذاthis جَزاءُthe reward of الشاعِرِthe poet الكَذّابِthe liar
You did not miss the right course in my case—rightly guided:
You did not miss the course of right, well-guided;
This is the reward of the lying poet.
Such is the poet's payment when he lies.
