ياO لَيلُnight طُلgrow long لاnot أَشتَهيI desire
إِلّاexcept بِوَصلٍin union قِصَرَكyour brevity
O night, grow long; I do not desire
O night, be long, for I desire
your brevity except in union.
Only to shorten you by being with my beloved
لَوif باتَspent the night عِنديwith me قَمَريmy moon
ماnot بِتُّI spent the night أَرعىI watch قَمَرَكyour moon
If my moon spent the night with me,
If my moon were to spend the night with me
I would not spend the night watching your moon.
I wouldn't stay up watching for your moon
ياO لَيلُnight خَبِّرtell أَنَّنيthat I
أَلتَذُّI delight in عَنهُabout him خَبَرَكyour news
O night, make it known that I
O night, let it be known that I take pleasure
delight in your news of him.
In news of him from you
بِاللَهِby God قُلtell ليto me هَلhas …? وَفىhe kept faith
فَقالَthen it said لاno بَلrather غَدَرَكhe betrayed you
By God, tell me: has he kept faith?
By God, tell me, did he keep his promise?
Then it said: “No—rather, he betrayed you.”
He said: No, but he betrayed you
