Is it not time for the clouds to weep for one like me,

and lightning, its blade unsheathed, to seek vengeance for me?

Why have the stars of night not held a mourning assembly

to lament across the horizons what has been lost of my armor?

Had they treated me justly, being peers of my aspiration,

they would have cast down their hands in abasement on seeing mine.

Nor would the Pleiades' seven have parted; they would have been dimmed

at their rising by the fellowship Time had scattered.

By the life of the nights! Though long their bow was drawn,

their arrows surely struck the very seat of nobility.

They adorned themselves with my literary arts, yet my aims

come into view within the compass of an unadorned wish.

I am singled out for hatred for my understanding, as though

Time nursed a blood feud against those with understanding.

I am shunned for stringing every necklace,

its twin strands studded with gems of decisive speech.

And if I could, to please my enemies,

I would buy a share of ignorance with some of my forbearance.

O languid-lidded woman, why are you distraught?

Have the days not shown you a star that fell before me?

Weep less; you are not the first noble woman

to fold her flank in grief over bereavement's sting.

In Moses' mother is a lesson, when she cast him

into the sea in the chest; take heed and be consoled.

Perhaps the Sovereign, gracious in his deeds, with power

to do so, will deal graciously with me after despair.

God holds knowledge of the unseen concerning us; sufficient for us

is He, when Time oppresses, as a just judge.

A great-souled man, rooted among the noble—and rarely

do you see a branch not drawing sustenance from its root.

Ever shouldering the burdens of honor and piety,

trailing the hems of lordship and excellence.

When the besetting crisis grows obscure, he

with his counsels is like script made clear by vowel marks.

Beneath his deliberation lies the force of resolve,

as death lurks in the languor of wide eyes.

The radiance of his cheer glimmers over hope,

as a sharp sword's radiance gleams upon polishing.

Such graces! The full moon's beauty has no cause

save that they dictate through the night, and it takes dictation.

They choke my praise, just as, straining, is choked

the tender maiden's bracelet by her plump wrist.

Their nobility suffices them without praise,

as a naturally dark eye needs no adornment of kohl.

Abu al-Hazm, in reproaching you I lean

upon a welcoming refuge where greatness finds shelter.

Doves of complaint have greeted you at dawn, cooing,

calling to you from my literary arts' drooping boughs.

A noble steed that, when steeds race toward a goal,

gallops like rain and seizes the prize-winning finish,

stands, one hoof raised, in humiliation's stall, complaining

through its neighing of the hurt its fetters have inflicted.

Is it just that my letters reached you one after another,

yet you kept consigning them to ʿAdl's hands—to ruin?

I reserve you for the gravest crisis and hope to be seen

marked by your favors, for I am not without distinction.

My soul has kept promising me hopes from you,

as though in its promise I had glimpsed rainless lightning.

Is it because the slanderers claimed what deserves no credence

that you stint in helping me and spare no effort in forsaking me?

I thirst for your aid, so sweet in its fruit,

and suffer the sun, longing for your justice's ample shade.

Even had I deliberately committed a sin,

it would be nothing new in your character to grant respite.

For I did not hide during the War of al-Fijar, nor obey

Musaylima when he said, 'I am one of the messengers.'

    وَمِثلُكَ قَد يَعفو وَمالَكَ مِن مِثلِ

    One like me may be swept astray by youth's intoxication;

one like you may pardon—and you have no equal.

My understanding surely forbids me that which

the slanderer proclaimed; my reason reins me in.

Would I unravel my praise of you after making it strong,

and follow none but the woman who undoes her spinning?

Then I would condemn life's covenant, while

drought has always embittered the taste of both through the days.

I was never one to offer obscenity to nobility,

nor speak ill of one whose deeds are good.

Why should I not praise a benefactor's favors,

when the garden praises the dew with its fragrance?

It was the sandal that slipped beneath me; will you give the lie

to my foes' saying, 'It is the young lizard's fatal slip'?

Will you let your bounty act as intercessor,

and grant its plea, fortunate in disposition, or add another favor?

    تحَفّ اِبسِطِ اِستَألِف صُنِ اِحمِ اِصطَنِع أَعلِ

    Grant refuge, give redress, grant safety, do good; begin, renew, suffice, protect;

show solicitude, extend generosity, win affection, preserve, defend, patronize, exalt.

Wishes—if their knotting were possible by the hand of favor,

everything among them hard to untie would become easy.

Indeed my expectation stands between your two deeds,

as love stands between estrangement and union.

If my wishes are granted me by you, that is a trait

of those upright deeds and that gentle nature.

If not, I will gather companionship from separation's loneliness,

and the terror of night travel, between mount and saddle.

A guardian will care for what of me you neglected,

and one will be found to prize the worth you cheapened.

But where is an answer on your behalf that greatness will accept,

when the assembly's tongues later question me?
