    يُعطي اِعتِباري ما جَهِلتُ فَأَعلَمُ

    Time, when it dictates, is eloquent though mute;

it grants my reflection knowledge I lacked, and so I learn.

For one who has measured events at their true worth,

their honey and bitter colocynth are equal in his eyes.

I have reflected: living abroad need not entail

a troubled end, nor does caution offer protection.

How many an idler prospers, his lot astonishing,

while a struggler toils incessantly yet goes without!

I see endeavors as swords competing

for the utmost keenness: some bend, others cut straight through.

How often a man of noble lineage has been lifted higher

by rank, only for the basest lowborn to oppose him!

The most grievous calamity is a doer of good

whom a criminal strives to charge with a crime.

You find the envious deaf to the sound of loyalty,

yet the speckled serpent will listen to charmers.

Tell the aggressors twanging their bows:

You will see whom those arrows strike dead.

You kept secrets, but your hidden faults were discerned

by a vigilant man, guided to them and inspired.

    لَم يَعدُكُم أَن رُدَّ وَهُوَ مُقَلَّمُ

    You readied the claw of slander for wickedness;

you gained nothing beyond its being turned back, clipped.

You cast piety behind your backs,

so the noblest, pious man became hateful to you.

Muhammad's forbearance would not let him be turned

from his pledge by a blameworthy man of corrupt conscience.

A king who rises before the eyes, a white forehead-blaze,

    gleaming, displayed by sable Time.

The eyes are dazzled by the manifest splendor of his looks:

a finely proportioned form, seen to fill the hearts.

And the radiance of a brow whose rays spread far

makes sun and moon needless to whoever beholds it.

Bright-browed: the sun wishes it might be fashioned for him

into a crown whose sides the stars would stud.

His beauties shamed the gardens; the rain wept

over them late at night, and at dawn they smiled.

    وَالبِشرِ يَشمِسُ وَالنَدى يَتَغَيَّمُ

    In rank he is distant; in humility he draws near;

in cheerfulness he shines like the sun, in bounty he gathers clouds.

Jubilant on battle day, he presents a smiling

face to it, while death scowls.

Valor like a lion's charge; set beside it,

bounty like the outpouring of the vast, brimming sea.

My soul be your ransom, O king to whom

    all kings concede supremacy.

You have surpassed them all, and none among them denies

that you have become their peerless one, who has no twin.

No wonder: in reason's first conception, the mother of glory

is too barren for a twin to be matched with you.

    فَالداءُ يَسري إِن عَدا لا يُحسَمُ

    So cut off the causes of every evil before it takes hold;

for disease spreads: once it passes bounds, it cannot be checked.

How many a fire-stick's spark has grown until it became

a volcano of fire, shattering everything!

So too the sweeping flood: it is only

drizzle at first, then a downpour pouring in torrents.

    وَاِفهَم فَإِنَّكَ بِالبَواطِنِ أَفهَمُ

    Wealth drives its possessors beyond their limits;

and understand, for you are more discerning of hidden matters.

And recall your father's deeds at the outset of his rule

    toward every suspect—for you know.

    فَصَفَت لَهُ الدُنيا وَلَذَّ المَطعَمُ

    He spared none of those whose harm he anticipated;

so the world grew serene for him, and food became sweet.

Why, then, recoil from a deed like his,

when you are more decisive in crises and more valiant?

And your steadfast presence never bends,

and your keen sword never grows blunt.

    وَالمَجدُ أَشمَخُ وَالصَريمَةُ أَصرَمُ

    Your resources are greater, and your tall spears many;

your glory is loftier, your resolve firmer.

Never leave people room for doubt,

and be resolute: in grave affairs one like you is most resolute.

The poet of Kinda once spoke, in times past,

a verse known through the passing nights:

Lofty honor is not safe from harm

until blood is spilled along its flanks.

Factions howled; you roared a rebuking roar,

with which the bold, fierce lion terrified the little dog.

Oh, would that I knew: will their fool return,

or has that muzzle already stopped him from barking?

From you I have—let the envious melt in flames—

a gracious standing and the most honored place,

and surpassing good fortune, forever beheld

in youthful freshness, while every fortune grows old.

    كَلّا وَلا خَفِيَ اِصطِناعي الأَقدَمُ

    My loyal following was never found neglected in your keeping;

no indeed, nor was the earlier favor shown me overlooked.

Rather, full protection and sincere care were bestowed

by pledges whose bonds are secured and never severed.

Then let thanks traverse the earth, bound for Najd,

from me, relayed through gatherings, bound for Tihama.

Fragrant—it is far-wafting musk; sweet to

the minds' sense of smell is its breathed-in perfume.

And when the boughs of noble deeds droop,

    praise becomes their melodious cooing.

Pride is a mouth smiling at your staunch protection,

and glory a mantle embroidered with your loyalty.

    وَتَسَوَّغِ النُعمى فَإِنَّكَ مُنعِمُ

    So live safe as long as the world endures, for you are its beauty;

and savor blessings, for you are a benefactor.
