Who will tell, on my behalf, the full moon that reached perfection

at beauty’s rising, and the bough that grew straight,

that Time, which bestowed his affection

on me, holds my gratitude in pledge for what it did?

As for the beloved who showed us coldness,

we did not deem his aversion a grave calamity.

We did no more than win, to our eyes’ content,

Jupiter, and for his sake shun Saturn.

You are the beloved whom I have never ceased to cloak

in love’s shade, and water with draught after draught of contentment.

This is the truth, not words of mine meant to deceive:

Were you to say, “Die,” my answer would not be “No.”
