إِلَيكِto you مِنَamong الأَنامِhumankind غَداhas become ارتِياحيmy delight
وَأَنتِand you عَلىthroughout الزَمانِtime مَدىthe utmost reach of اِقتِراحيmy desire
Of all humankind, my delight has turned to you,
And through all time you are my utmost desire.
وَماand never اعتَرَضَتassailed هُمومُcares النَفسِthe soul إِلّاexcept
وَمِنand from ذِكراكِremembrance of you رَيحانيmy sweet basil وَراحيand my wine
Never have the soul's cares beset me, but
From remembrance of you come my sweet basil and my wine.
فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom إِنَّindeed صَبريmy patience عَنكِaway from you صَبريmy patience
لَدىduring عَطَشيmy thirst عَلىfor الماءِthe water القَراحِpure
May I be your ransom! My patience without you is like my patience
For pure water when I thirst.
وَليand I have أَمَلٌa hope لَوِif الواشونَthe talebearers كَفّواdesisted
لَأَطلَعَwould surely bring forth غَرسُهُits sapling ثَمَرَthe fruit of النَجاحِsuccess
And I have a hope: if only the talebearers would desist,
Its sapling would surely bear the fruit of success.
وَأَعجَبُand I marvel كَيفَhow يَغلِبُنيovercomes me عَدُوٌّan enemy
رِضاكِyour favor عَلَيهِagainst him مِنamong أَمضىthe keenest سِلاحِweaponry
And I marvel how an enemy can overcome me,
When your favor is among the keenest weapons against him.
وَلَمّاand when أَنthat جَلَتكِunveiled you لِيَto me اِختِلاساًfurtively
أَكُفُّthe hands of الدَهرِtime لِلحَينِfor death المُتاحِdecreed
And when you were unveiled to me in a stolen glimpse
By the hands of time, for the death decreed,
رَأَيتُI saw الشَمسَthe sun تَطلُعُrising مِنfrom نِقابٍa face veil
وَغُصنَand a bough of البانِthe bān tree يَرفُلُwalks proudly فيin وِشاحِa sash
I saw the sun rise from a face veil,
And a bān-tree bough swaying proudly in a sash.
فَلَوso if أسْتطيعُI could طِرتُI would fly إِلَيكِto you شَوقاًout of longing
وَكَيفَand how يَطيرُflies مَقصوصُclipped الجَناحِthe wing
If only I could, I would fly to you in longing—
But how can one whose wing is clipped fly?—
عَلىin حالَيthe two states of وِصالٍunion وَاِجتِنابٍand avoidance
وَفيand in يَوميthe two days of دُنُوٍّnearness وَانتِزاحِand distance
In both states of union and avoidance,
And on days of nearness and of distance.
وَحَسبِيَand enough for me أَنthat تُطالِعَكِbehold you الأَمانيwishes
بِأُفقِكِat your horizon فيin مَساءٍevening أَوor صَباحِmorning
And it is enough for me that my wishes behold you
At your horizon, in evening or morning—
فُؤاديmy heart مِنof أَسىًsorrow بِكِbecause of you غَيرُnot خالٍfree
وَقَلبيand my heart عَنfrom هَوىًlove لَكِfor you غَيرُnot صاحِsober
My heart is not free of sorrow over you,
And my heart is not sober from love for you—
وَأَنand that تُهديyou send السَلامَgreetings إِلَيَّto me غِبّاًat intervals
وَلَوand even if فيin بَعضِsome of أَنفاسِthe breaths of الرِياحِthe winds
And that you send me greetings from time to time,
Even if only in some breaths of the winds.
