    You reminded me of the bygone life that was sweet.

    Oh, if only those vanished days had returned!

    When we were in a garden of union, made lush

    By a cloud of joy that poured down over it.

    I marvel indeed at a longing that will not leave me:

    For whenever it is said to have died, it returns.

    How many a glance of yours into my eyes showed you

    On the day of the visit that my heart had melted.

    فَإِن أُكَلِّفهُ عَنكُم سَلوَةً يابى

    A heart that prolongs my stays in obedience to you;

    Yet if I bid it forget you, it refuses.

    لا عَذَّبَ اللَهُ إِلّا عاشِقاً تابا

    My repentance for loving you is not sincere;

    May God torment none but a lover who repents!
