وَلَيلٍand a night أَدَمناwe kept up فيهِin it شُربَdrinking مُدامَةٍwine
إِلىuntil أَنthat بَداappeared لِلصُبحِof dawn فيin اللَيلِthe night تَأثيرُan effect
And one night we kept drinking wine,
Until dawn's effect upon the night appeared.
وَجاءَتand came نُجومُthe stars الصُبحِof dawn تَضرِبُadvancing فيthrough الدُجىthe darkness
فَوَلَّتso fled نُجومُthe stars اللَيلِof night وَاللَيلُand the night مَقهورُvanquished
And the stars of dawn came advancing through the darkness,
So the stars of night fled, and night was vanquished.
فَحُزناso we gained مِنَfrom اللَذاتِthe pleasures أَطيَبَthe sweetest طيبِهاof their sweetness
وَلَمand did not يَعرُناbefall us هَمٌّworry وَلاnor عاقَhindered تَكديرُvexation
So we gained the sweetest pleasures had to offer,
And no worry befell us, nor did vexation hinder us.
خَلاexcept أَنَّهُthat it لَوif طالَit had lasted longer دامَتwould have endured مَسَرَّتيmy joy
وَلَكِنbut لَياليnights الوَصلِof union فيهِنَّin them تَقصيرُbrevity
Save that, had it lasted longer, my joy would have endured;
But nights of union are all too brief.
