لَستُI am not بِالجاحِدِa denier of آلاءَblessings العِلَلailments
كَمhow many لَهاbelonging to them مِنof أَلَمٍa pain يُدنيbrings near الأَمَلhope
I do not deny the blessings of ailments.
How many of their pains bring hope near!
أَجتَليI behold مِنfor أَجلِهاtheir sake بَدرَthe full moon العُلاglory
مُشرِقاًshining فيin مَنزِليmy home حينَwhen كَمَلgrew full
Thanks to them, I behold the full moon of glory,
Shining in my home when it grew full.
حُلَّةٌa robe أَلبَسَclothed عَينيmy eye فَخرَهاits splendor
فَاِغتَدَتso it became تَرفُلُwalking proudly فيin أَبهىthe most splendid الحُلَلrobes
A robe whose splendor clothed my eye,
So it walked proudly in the most splendid robes.
رَفَّgleamed بِشرُgladness الأُفقِthe horizon فيin عَينيmy eye لَهاbecause of it
لاnot لِأَنَّbecause الشَمسَthe sun حَلَّتentered فيin الحَمَلAries
The horizon's gladness gleamed in my eye because of it,
Not because the sun had entered Aries.
ماnot أُباليI care مِنabout زَمانيmy fate بَعدَهاafter it
إِذsince أَصَحَّhealed النَفسَthe soul إِنeven if جِسميmy body أَعَلّmade ill
I care nothing for my fate after this,
Since it healed my soul, even if it sickened my body.
أَيُّهاO المَولىlord لَقَدindeed حُمِّلتُI have been laden ماwhat
لَمhas not يَدَعleft فيwithin وُسعِthe capacity of عَبدٍa servant مُحتَمَلa bearable burden
O my lord, I have indeed been laden with what
Has left a servant no strength to bear anything more.
وَضَحَshone bright الطَوقُthe collar الَّذيwhich حَلَّيتَنيyou adorned me
فَتَراءَتهُso beheld it نُفوسٌsouls لاnot مُقَلeyes
The collar with which you adorned me shone bright,
So souls, not eyes, beheld it.
أَناI لَوif طُوِّقتُI were collared مِنهُinstead of it بَدَلاًas a substitute
أَنجُمَthe stars الجَوزاءَOrion لَمnot أَرضَI would accept البَدَلthe exchange
If I were given in its stead a necklace of
The stars of Orion, I would not accept the exchange.
كَمhow many مَرادٍa retreat لِيَfor me مِنfrom نَعمائِكُمyour bounties

وارِفِspreading الظِلِّshade وَكَمand how many وِردٍa draught عَلَلa renewed draught
How many a retreat is mine in your bounties,
With spreading shade, and how many a draught renewed!
لاmay not تَزَلcease دَولَتُكُمyour dominion مَبسوطَةًoutspread
بَسطَةًan expansion فيwithin طَيِّهاits folds قَبضُcontraction الدُوَلrealms
May your dominion ever remain outspread,
An expansion enfolding the contraction of other realms.
وَرَأىand may see المُعتَضِدُal-Mu'tadid المَنصورُthe victorious ماwhat
أَنبَأَتهُforetold him فيكَabout you لَيتَif only أَوor لَعَلperhaps
And may al-Mu'tadid, the victorious, see what
'If only' or 'perhaps' foretold him of you.
فَسَتَلقاهُso will greet him اللَياليthe nights طَلقَةًsmiling
بِتَفاريقِwith the scattered parts of أَمانيهِhis wishes جُمَلwhole collections
So the nights will greet him smiling,
With his scattered wishes gathered into wholes.
