هَوايَmy love وَإِنand even if تَناءَتhas grown distant عَنكَfrom you داريmy home
كَمِثلِlike هَوايَmy love فيin حالِthe state of الجِوارِbeing neighbors
My love, even if my home grows distant from you,
My love, though my abode grows distant from you
Is the same as my love when we are neighbors.
Is like my love when we were neighbors
مُقيمٌabiding لاnot تُغَيِّرُهُchange it عَوادٍadversities
تُباعِدُspread apart بَينَbetween أَحيانِthe times of المَزارِvisiting
It abides, unchanged by adversities
Remaining steadfast, not changed by the times
That lengthen the intervals between visits.
That make infrequent our visits to one another
رَأَيتُكَI saw you قُلتَyou said إِنَّthat الوَصلَunion بَدرٌa full moon
مَتىwhen خَلَتِwere free البُدورُfull moons مِنَof السِرارِmoonless nights
I saw you say that union is a full moon—
When I saw you, I said, “Reunion is a full moon”
When have full moons ever been free of moonless nights?
Whenever the full moons are free of clouds
وَرابَكَand it troubled you أَنَّنيthat I جَلدٌsteadfast صَبورٌpatient
وَكَمand how much صَبرٍpatience يَكونُcomes عَنِfrom اِصطِبارِstriving to endure
And it troubled you that I am steadfast and patient—
You doubted that I am patient and forbearing
And how much patience comes from forcing oneself to endure!
How much forbearance can come from being patient?
وَلَمand did not أَهجُرI stay away لِعَتبٍout of resentment غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I
أَضَرَّتharmed بيme مُعاقَرَةُhabitual drinking of العُقارِwine
And I did not stay away out of resentment; rather,
I did not abandon you out of blame, but
Habitual drinking of wine had harmed me.
Drinking wine had harmed me
وَأَنَّand that الخَمرَwine لَيسَthere is no لَهاfor it خُمارٌhangover
تُبَرَّحُtorments بيme فَكَيفَso how مَعَwith الخُمارِa hangover
And wine, even without a hangover,
Wine has no veil over it
Torments me—so what of it with a hangover?
With which to conceal me, so how can I be veiled?
وَهَلand could أَنسىI forget لَدَيكَwith you نَعيمَthe bliss of عَيشٍlife
كَوَشيِlike the brocade of الخَدِّthe cheek طُرِّزَwas embroidered بِالعِذارِwith down along the cheek
And could I forget the bliss of life with you,
Can I forget the bliss of living by your side
Like a cheek's brocade embroidered with down,
Like cheek made elegant with beauty marks?
وَساعاتٍand hours يَجولُroams اللَهوُmerriment فيهاin them
مَجالَthe roaming of الطَلِّdew فيin حَدَقِthe eyes of البَهارِoxeye flowers
And hours in which merriment would roam
And hours when playfulness roams
As dew roams in the eyes of oxeye flowers?
Through eyes’ orbits like the glint in flowers?
وَإِنand even if يَكُis قَرَّhas rested عَنكَaway from you اليَومَtoday جِسميmy body
فُديتَmay I be your ransom فَماso there is no لِقَلبِيَfor my heart مِنany قَرارِrest
And though my body rests away from you today,
If today my body is far from you
May I be your ransom—still my heart has no rest.
My soul has no peace away from you
وَكُنتَand you were عَلىdespite البِعادِthe distance أَجَلَّmost precious عِلقٍtreasure
لَدَيَّto me فَكَيفَso how إِذnow that أَصبَحتَyou have become جاريmy neighbor
And despite the distance, you were the most precious treasure
When distant, you were most precious to me
To me—so how much more now that you have become my neighbor?
So how can it be now that you are my neighbor?
