قد قلت لما مر يخطر ماشيا
I said, as he passed by walking, while people were either worshippers or lovers:
لآل محمد أصبحت عبدا
For the family of Muhammad I have become a servant
كم نعمة لله موفورة
How many bounties of God are abundant
من لقلب يهيم في كل وادي
For a heart that roams in every valley,
أنا وجميع من فوق التراب
I am all that is above dust
تزلزلت الأرض زلزالها
The earth did quake and tremble
قد قبلنا من الجميع كتابا
We have accepted the book from all
على الله توكلت
I rely on God
يا غزالا عذاره كالطراز
O gazelle, whose glance is like embroidery
الشيب ينشر عمرا ثم يطويه
Old age spreads out a lifetime then folds it up
يا وصل مالك لا تعاود
O connection, what is yours that you do not repeat
علي ولي المؤمنين لديكم
'Ali is the Guardian of the faithful with you
فما عدمنا من الكنيف وقد
Roses and maidens we sit among
حلاوة حبك يا سيدي
The sweetness of your love, my master
علي كالغزال أو الغزاله
Ali is like a gazelle or a lovely gazelle
اذا هممت بأمر
If you intend any matter, then seek guidance
جد بالذي تملك في حقة
Try with what you own in earnest
قل لأبي القاسم ان جيته
Tell Abu al-Qasim if you come to him
يقولون لي ما تحب النبي
They ask me, do you love the Prophet?
يقال لماذا ليس يسكر بعدما
It is said, why is he not drunk after
لم يشتر الناس ولا باعوا
People did not buy or sell
حب علي بن أبي طالب
The love of Ali son of Abi Talib
شفيع اسماعيل في الآخره
Isma'il's intercessor in the hereafter
وفرحتي بوجهه الصبيح
My Dear, My Joy is in Your Radiant Face
حب علي لي أمل
My hope is in the love of Ali
وقالوا علي علا قلت لا
They said Ali is exalted, I said no
ما بال علوى لا ترد جوابي
Why does Alwa not answer my call
بلغت نفسي مناها
My soul has attained its wish
شيب لغير أوانه يعتاد
Gray hair untimely appears,
لاح لعينيك الطلل
No relief for your eyes from staring at the ruins,
علي أمامي دون من جار وارتشى
Ali is in front of me, not the one who fears or cowers
قد ظل يجرح صدري
My chest has long been wounded by one my mind cannot forget
مالي أرى قوما اذا سمعوا
Why do I see people, when they hear
قولا لهذا الخارجي الناصب
A word for this hostile foreigner
ما لقوم اذا يقال علي
What people, when Ali is mentioned
مشيب عراه لو يدوم مشيب
If only this whiteness of the temples would last
وعهدي بالعقارب حين تشتو
And I pledged to scorpions when they sting
وشادن جماله
And his beauty astounds me
اذا لم يكن لركوب الشري
If the wicked's only purpose in riding
يا أهل سارية السلام عليكم
O people of Sariya, peace be upon you
أشبب لكن بالمعالي أشبب
I long for the heights of glory, long for them
قد طال قرنك يا أخي
Your time has been long, my brother,
أناخ الشيب ضيفا لم أرده
Old age alighted, an unwelcome guest
يا قاضيا بات أعمى
O judge, now blind
إذا نحن سلمنا لك العلم كله
If we surrendered all knowledge to you
إن ام الصقر في الود
The mother of the falcon in the affection
وخط كأن الله قال لحسنه
And a line as though God said to its beauty
ومهفهف يغني عن القمر
A zephyr that sings of the moon
وناصح أسرف في النكير
A harsh critic rebuked me beyond measure
يا خاطرا يخطر في تيهه
Oh my heart wandering astray
من لم يعدنا اذا مرضنا
Whoever did not visit us when we were sick
حب الوصي علامة
Love of al-Wasi is a sign
إنا دعوناك على انبساط
We called upon you as you lay sprawled out
الحب سكر خماره التلف
Love is an intoxicant, ruin is its hangover
يا شادنا في صدغه عقرب
O one with a scorpion stinging his temple
غزال له وجه ينال به المنى
A gazelle with a face that earns wishes
يا من وهبت له روحي فعذبها
O You to whom I gave my soul, and he tortured it
لم أر مثل جعفر مخلوقا
Roses are red, violets are blue
تعرفت بالعدل في مذهبي
I became acquainted with justice in my creed
خط الوزير ابن مقله
Garden of a heart and an inkwell
تجمع فيه ما تفرق في الورى
In him is gathered what throughout the world is scattered wide
يا فتى متوي رفقا
O noble one, tread gently
أبا شجاع يا شجاع الورى
O brave Abū Shujā’, O bravest of men
العدل والتوحيد مذهبي الذي
Justice and monotheism are my principles by which
حب علي علو همه
The love of Ali is the highest of goals
يقرع بالعود ثنايا لها
He strikes the lute for her melodies
إن قاضينا لأعمى
Our judge is blind
يا رب لا تخلني من صنعك الحسن
O Lord, do not deprive me of Your good making
أكرم أخاك بأرض مولده
Honor your brother in his native land
حق العيادة يوم بعد يومين
The right to visit is a day after two days
لو فتشوا قلبي رأوا وسطه
If they searched my heart they would see in its center
يقال تركت الذي حسنه
It is said you left the one whose beauty
أحمد الله لبشرى
I praise Allah for good tidings
همام رأى الدنيا سواما فحاطها
Hammam saw the world as vain, so he shunned it,
قولوا لاخواننا جميعا
Tell all our brothers,
أسد ولكن الكلاب
A lion, but the dogs barked at him with howling,
عندي سر لابن متوية
I have a secret for the son of Mutawwiya
لنا قاض له رأس
We have a judge with a head
حب علي بن أبي طالب
The love of Ali ibn Abi Talib
أقول وقد رأيت له سحابا
I say as I have seen a cloud
كنا وأسباب الهوى متفقه
We and the causes of passion once agreed
علي أمير المؤمنين خليفة
Ali, Commander of the Faithful, successor
بالنص فاعقد ان عقدت يمينا
By the text I swear, if you swore an oath,
يا طالبا سمت الرشاد والسدد
O seeker of guidance and righteousness
عليك بالعلم فادخره
Seek knowledge and hoard it
الناس في أخلاقهم أصناف
People differ in their morals
فطمت أيا عباد يا ابن الفواطم
You were weaned, O worshipers, O son of weaned ones
وأعين كالذري في سفلاته
With eyes like beads deep-set in their sockets,
حفظ اللسان راحة الانسان
Guarding one's tongue gives comfort to mankind
يا ابن الخضيري لا تذهب على خجل
Oh son of Al-Khadhuri don't be ashamed
قل للوزير أبي محمد الذي
Tell the minister Abi Muhammad, he who
نحن والله من هوائك يا جر
We are, by God, confused by your fickleness, O Jarjan,
أبو الفضل من أجرى الى الفضل يافعا
Oh generous master who granted bounty, doing good
وأحمر يحكي الشمس شكلا وصورة
Redness tells of the sun, its shape and form
اذا ما دهاك الخطب تخشى ضراره
When troubles press you and dangers affright
هذي المكارم والعلياء تفتخر
These noble traits and virtues take pride
وشادن قلت له ما اسمكا
I asked him what's your name
تقول البيت في خمسين عاما
You say the house in fifty years
أبوك أبو علي ذو علاء
Your father Abu Ali is a man of great distinction
برئت من الأرجاس رهط امية
I disavow the sinful people, the Umayyad clan
أروح القلب ببعض الهزل
I refresh the heart with some jest
رأيت عليا في كمال جماله
I saw Ali in the peak of his beauty
هذا علي علي في محاسنه
This is Ali, Ali with his virtues,
يا أيها الملك الذي كل الورى
O King who rules all the land
وقائلة لم عرتك الهموم
A sayer asked, "Why are you distraught?"
أحمد هذا سبط متوية
Ahmad, this descendant of Mutawa
حب علي شرف
The love of Ali is noble
اياك والحرص ان الحرص مهلكة
Beware of greed, for greed destroys
حب علي بن أبي طالب
The love of Ali ibn Abi Talib
سيأتيك برق من هجائي خلب
Lightning flashes from my love will come to you,
وكم شامت بي بعد موتي جاهلا
How many a fool will gloat over me when I am dead,
وحيت من فرط السرور
I was elated with joy
كلامنا من غرر
Our words are like pearls
قدم الرئيس مقدما في سبقه
The president led the way with his precedence,
لقد رحلت سعدى فهل لك مسعد
My happiness has departed, so is there anyone to make me happy?
غمائم هن فوق أرؤسنا
The clouds above our heads
أحب النبي وآل النبي
I love the Prophet and the Prophet's kin
أسعدك الله بيوم الفصح
May God make you happy on Easter day
أيها المرء كن لما لست ترجو
O man, be for what you are not hoping for
لاتع ما جاءك الوشاة به
Pay no heed to the slander spread about you,
وكاتب جاءنا بأعمى
A scribe approached us with a blind man
ومن لؤلؤ في الاقحوان منظم
And pearls in an oyster shell arranged
أفاضل الدنيا وان برزوا
However excellent the lands though they seem
كتبت يا سيدي كتابا
I wrote, my lord, a book
هنيته ابنا يشيع الأنس في البشر
I congratulate the son who spreads companionship among people
أتاني البدر باكيا خجلا
The full moon came to me weeping bashfully
عذلت لتزويجه أمه
I reproached him for obeying his mother
تصد أميمة لما رأت
Umaymah turns away when she sees
عمري لقد راق طرفي حسن زاهرة
My life, my eyes have seen the beauty of a blossoming Zahira
مولاي قد جاءتك اترجة
My Lord, a slave has come to you
يا أيها القاضي الذي نفسي له
Oh You who my soul yearns to see
بدا لنا كالبدر في شروقه
He seemed to us like the full moon rising,
رويت في السنة المشهورة البركه
It is transmitted in the well-known tradition, a blessing
إذا رأيت امرءا في حال عسرته
When you see a man in his time of need
فلما تشكت أصفهان حنينها
When Isfahan began to yearn for you
بالله قل لي أقرطاس تخط به
By God, tell me is it papyrus you draw lines on
يا قمرا عارضني على وجل
Oh moon that appeared to me in a hurry
تحدثت الركاب بسير أروى
The caravan conversed of journeying
العدل والتوحيد والامامه
Justice, monotheism, and leadership
ولما تناءت بالحبيب دياره
And when the abode of my beloved disappeared
عزمت على الفصد يا سيدي
I have resolved to bleed myself, my lord
قال لي ان رقيبي
My watcher said that his home
عناني من الهم ما قد عناني
My sorrow overwhelmed me with grief
يا أبا الفضل لم تأخرت عنا
O Abu al-Fadl, why did you delay coming to us
إلى سيد لولاه كان زماننا
To a master, without whom our time
قد حضر الجامع مع رقة
He attended the mosque gently
ومهفهف شكل المجون
A garden of ecstasy in lovely forms,
قل لأبي القاسم الحسيني
Say to Abul Qasim al-Husaini
قل لابن حمزة يمسح
Tell the son of Hamza to wipe
لبني المنجم فطنة لهبيه
My bright Lebanese has the insight of flame
لقد ظن بدر التم نقص جماله
Badr al-tamm thought his beauty was impaired
لما بدا العارض في الخد
When the beloved's cheek showed dimples
وتيهاء لم تطمث بخف وحافر
A wilderness unstamped by hoof or sandal
إذا ما نعى الناعون أهل مودتي
When mourners mourn the loss of those I hold dear
قلبي على الجمرة يا أبا العلا
My burning heart, O father of nobility
دخول النار في حب الوصي
Entering the fire for loving the successor
أشهد بالله وآلائه
I bear witness by Allah and His signs
أحسن من عود ومن ضارب
Better than a fragrant piece of wood, and than one who plays the strings
قلت وقد قيل بدا شعره
I said, though it was said his poetry
أقول قولا بلا احتشام
I say a saying without modesty
أيها الجالس المفكر في الأم
O you who sits thinking of destiny
أودع حضرتك العاليه
I bid farewell to your sublime presence,
يا أمير المؤمنين المرتضى
O commander of the faithful, chosen one
أما ترى اليوم كيف جاد لنا
Do you not see how today has graciously given us
مطفل أطفل من أشعب
A poor child from the glens
ما سافرت لحظات عيني نحوكم
My eyes' moments did not travel towards you
تشكى الفضل من سقم عراه
The excellency complained of an illness that made him bare
هات المدامة يا غلام معجلا
Bring me the wine, O boy, and hurry!
بدت عذارى مدت سرادقها
The virgins' pavilions were erected,
لعمرك ما الانسان الا بدينه
By your life! Man is naught but what his faith makes of him.
ومهفهف حسن الشمائل أهيف
With a gentle swaying gait so fair
إذا تراخى مديحي آل يسينا
If my praise for the Family of Yasin ever wanes,
وقد مضى يومان من شهرنا
Two days have passed in our month
أما رأيت الدمع مسجوما
Have you not seen tears concealed
وشادن يكثر من قول لا
With his frequent saying "no"
يا ثنويا لج في حكمه
O dualist entrenched in his rule
ولما بدا التفاح أحمر مشرقا
When the apple appeared red and bright
دب العذار على ميدان وجنته
The rain pattered on the meadow and its groves
يا موحش الإخوان عش مستأنسا
O companion of solitude, live in harmony
إن أبا هاشم يد الشرف
Indeed, Aba Hashim is the hand of honor
وشادن أحسن في اسعافه
How excellent is Šādī in granting aid,
بمحمد ووصيه وابنيهما الطاهرين
By Muhammad and his successor and his two sons
أبصرت في كف ابن متوي عصا
I saw in the hand of a swaggering son a staff
ما ملة فوق وجه الأرض من ملل
No sect above the face of the earth is free from error,
سعادة ما نالها قط أحد
A happiness no one has ever attained
شتمت من تيمني مغالطا
I rebuked the one who reproached me fallaciously
يا أصفهان سقيت الغيث من كثب
O Isfahan, you were watered with rain in abundance
سيد الناس حيدره
The Master of Mankind's reminder
مثاقف في غاية الحذق
A man of great skill and intellect
يا زائرا سائرا إلى الكوفه
O visitor traveling to Kufa
سرقت يا ظبي كتبي
You stole my books, oh gazelle
أشكو إليك زمانا ظل يعركني
I complain to you of a time that rubbed me raw
سرقت شعري وغيري
You stole my poetry and others'
لقد صدقوا والراقصات إلى منى
They spoke truly, by the dancing-girls, unto Mina,
لبسن برود الوشي لا لتجمل
She donned a veil not for beautification,
رق الزجاج ورقت الخمر
The glass was thin, the wine was clear
تأخرت عني والغرام غريم
You were late for me, while lovesickness was a creditor,
والله ما اتخذ الكتابة حرفة
By God, I did not take up writing as a profession
احذر الغيبة فهي
Beware of backbiting, for it is
يا أبا القاسم قل لي
O Abu al-Qasim, tell me
لك الله كم أودعت قلبي من أسى
How much sorrow, my God, You have lodged in my heart
يا عائب الأعراب من جهله
O you who blame the Bedouins for their ignorance,
تقول يوما حبذا ما بالها
One day you will say, how good it would have been
لو قيل للمجبر المعتوه ان له
Had it been said to the compeller, lost in folly,
وإذا قرأنا هل أتى
And when we read did it come
يقولون لي كم عهد عينك بالكرى
They ask me how long have your eyes been shedding tears
دمن عفون بذي الأراك
The abode has become desolate in the place of intimacy
قالوا خراسان أخرجت رشأ
They said Khorasan bore a flower
العيد زارك نازلا برواقكا
The feast descended upon your abode
وقضيب من الخلاف بديع
With a staff of fine wood elaborately adorned
أقبل الثلج في غلائل نور
The snow came in strands of light
أبو العباس تحضره جموع
Abu al-Abbas is surrounded by crowds
خوفني منجم أخو خبل
A deranged astrologer's brother frightened me,
بعثنا من الارنج ماطاب عرفه
We were sent orange blossoms with pleasing fragrance
مولاي لم لم تدع عبدك
My Master, why did you not invite
أبا العلا يا هلال الهزل والجد
O crescent moon of jest and earnestness,
هات المدامة يا غلام مصيرا
Bring me the wine, O boy, passing round,
قد قلت قولا صادقا بينا
I have spoken a truthful, clear word,
أرى سنتي قد ضمنت بعجائب
I see my two years have been filled with wonders,
وكأس تقول العين عند جلائها
A cup that the eye says upon its glitter
بمحمد ووصيه وابنيهما
By Muhammad, his successor and his two sons,
يا مالك الأرواح والأجسام
O Owner of souls and bodies
ند لفخر الدولة استعماله
His use is a boon for the pride of the state
تركت لسافي الريح بانة عرعرا
I left my tongue to the merciful wind, stumbling
يا زائرين اجتمعوا جموعا
O visitors gather in crowds
صرحت في حبي عن شكله
I have revealed the form of my love,
قولا لمن نصر الاجبار مجتهدا
Say to one who insists on compulsion though striving diligently,
يا ساريا قد نهضا
O rider who strode forth
راسلت من أهواه أطلب زورة
I wrote to the one I love seeking a visit
قد استجوب في الحكم
Sulayman ibn Mukhtar was asked in judgment,
يقول الناس لي رجل سديد
People say I am a steadfast man,
ان لبس السواد أقوى دليل
Wearing black is the strongest sign
وصفراء أو حمراء فهي مخيلة
Yellow or red, it is imagined
المجد أجمع ما حوته يميني
وشيدت مجدي بين قومي فلم أقل
سيشهد أبناء المفاخر كلهم
ان كنت تجهله فالبدر يعرفه
حب الوصي علامة
متغايرات قد جمعن وكلها
إني لحب محمد ووصيه
احفظ السر وارعه
يقولون لي أودى كثير بن أحمد
كلما زدت عتابا
كنت دهرا أقول بالاستطاعه
علي الى أعلى الجمال تعالى
وشادن ذي غنج
أبا حسن ان كان حبك مدخلي
أنى ركبت فكف الأرض كاتبة
سألت بريدا من خراسان جائيا
فم الغويري اذا
سبط متوى ان دارك دار
إن المحبة للوصي فريضة
زادت قرونك يا عمي
عليك في الامور بالتأني
لو شق عن قلبي يرى وسطه
وقهوة قد حضرت بختمها
ان ابن مسرور فتى كاتب
قالوا ترفضت قلت كلا
ان الغويري له نكهة
حبي محض لبني المصطفى
تسحب ما أردت على الصباح
خداه ورد وصدغه سبج
شعر الظريف ابن لكنك
قالت أبا القاسم استخففت بالغزل
حمدا لرب جل عن نديد
ما لعلي العلاء أشباه
حدق الحسان رمينني بتململ
يا زائرا سائرا إلى طوس
بحب علي تزول الشكوك
ألف أمير المؤمنين علي
أنا من شيعة الرضا
أنا رجل يرميني الناس بالرفض
أيعسوب دين الله صنو نبيه
يا سيدا أفديه عند شكاته
قل لأبي سعد الفتىالآبى
اذا ولاك سلطان فزده
وحبة من عنب قطفتها
وشمعة قدمت إلينا
قعقعة الثلج بماء عذب
لقد قلت لما أتوا بالطبيب
إن القداح أمرها عجيب
طويت محمودا على جفوته
هنئته هنئته
يا زائرا قد قصد المشاهدا
أبا العلاء ألا أبشر بمقدمنا
يا أيها الشمس لا أن طلعتها
الحمد لله حمدا دائما أبدا
يصد الفضل عنا أي صد
قد تعدوا على الصيام وقالوا
فمن كان يقطف ورد الجنان
أجفان هند كسيوف الهند
قالوا ربيعك قد قدم
انظر إلى وجه أبي زيد
نبئت انك منشد ما قلته
أبا يوسف ان العثانين آفة
وحبة من عنب
إذا المشكلات تصدين لي
تين يزين رداؤه مخبوءه
رشأ غدا وجدي عليه كردفه
يا ابن يعقوب يا نقيب البدور
عذار كالطراز على الطراز
هات مشطا إلي وليك عاجا
وشادن في الحسن كالطاووس
قد قبس القابسات قابوس
أبو نصر بن بكران
انظر اليه كأنه
وشادن أصبح فوق الصفه
زوجت أمك يا فتى
عين جودي على الشهيد القتيل
ناصب قال لي معاوية خالك
ابا هاشم مالي أراك عليلا
سعود يحار المشتري في طريقها
بعدت فطعم العيش عندي علقم
لا ترج اصلاح قلبي بلوم
يقر بعيني أن يلم رسولها
رأيت لبعض الناس فضلا اذا انتمى
نبي والوصي وسيدان
من كان ذا شك وذا غفلة
يا بانيا للقصر بل للعلى
ولما أبيتم أن تزوروا وقلتم
وددت أني بكفه قلم
وما نال كعب في السماحة كعبه
