1. Say to one who insists on compulsion though striving diligently,
The words of a man whose piety has not left his reason:

2. Is not your Lord just in His decree?
So He would not burden a soul beyond its capacity.

3. How then can He command assent in one in whom He created disbelief,
When he is not able to refrain?

4. And punish him with raging fires -
This is unbelief, this is a dreadful standpoint.

5. Rather He empowered the commanded one out of nobility,
And intended his guidance, and the way was facilitated.

6. So whoever obeyed found the reward sweet, and was not
Overtaken by fear, nor overcome by panic.

7. And whoever turned away from the path of right guidance, He punished
For his crime, and the truth is vast.

8. Look to our saying, you will be guided, but their saying
Confounds speech in one who does not reject it forcefully.

9. And praise be to God in all circumstances,
A praise with which hoped-for unity is embraced.
