- إذا ازداد رعيا للهوى زدته هوىIf he grows more attentive to love, I give him more love.
- إذا اشتد ما ألقاه هون علتيWhen what I endure grows severe, my affliction is eased
- إذا زار الحبيب أثار شوقاWhen the beloved visits, he stirs a longing
- إذا كان اللقاء يزيد شوقاIf meeting increases longing,
- أراعك برق في دجى الليل لامعDid a flash of lightning gleaming in the night's darkness frighten you?
- أرقت بنار بالطليحة أوقدتI lay sleepless because of a fire kindled at al-Ṭulayḥa.
- أرقت لبرق من تهامة خافقI lay sleepless at flickering lightning from Tihama,
- أرى كل مرتاب يخاف خيالهI see everyone beset by suspicion fearing his own shadow,
- أرى نوح الحمام يشوق قوماI see the doves’ lament stir longing in some people,
- أريتني النجم يجري بالنهار فلاYou showed me the star coursing by day, so no
- أشكو عليل فؤاد أنت متلفهI complain of an ailing heart that you are destroying,
- أصول به تيها عليه فمن رأىI swagger proudly toward him—for who has ever seen
- أغريتني بحياتي إذ غريت بهاYou tempted me with my life when you tempted with it
- أفوض أسبابي إلى الله كلهاI entrust every one of my affairs to God,
- أقول لصاحبي وسليانيI say to my two companions, who have consoled me,
- ألا تكن في الهوى أرويت من ظماءHave you not, in love, given drink to one of the thirsty,
- ألا من لقلب قد دعاه تجاسرهAh, who will aid a heart summoned by its own daring,
- ألا يا لقومي للهوى المتزايدAh, my people, help me against this ever-growing passion
- العذر يلحقه التحريف والكذبAn excuse is tainted by distortion and lies,
- إلى الله أشكو عبرة قد أظلتTo God I complain of a tear that has overshadowed me,
- إلى الله أشكو من بداني بوصلهTo God I complain of him who first approached me with his affection.
- أمثل الذي ألقى يقاومه صبرCan patience withstand the like of what I endure,
- أمر على المنازل كالغريبI pass by the dwellings like a stranger.
- أمرت ألا أتشكى الهوىYou ordered me not to complain of love,
- أمن أجل سار في دجى الليل لامعIs it because of a gleaming night-traveler in the darkness of night
- أمنت عليك الدهر والدهر غادرI feared no harm to you from time, though time is treacherous;
- أمنت عليك صرف الدهر حتىI feared no turns of time where you were concerned, until
- أمولاي لم تبعد عليك مطالبيO my lord, my requests have not been beyond your reach.
- أنا بالرق في الهوى منك أولىI am more deserving than you of bondage in love.
- أنت ابتدأت بميعادي فأوف بهYou first made me a promise, so fulfill it.
- أنزه في روض المحاسن مقلتيI let my eye wander through the garden of beauties,
- أنظر إلى السحر يجري في لواحظهI see the magic flowing in his glances
- أهيم بذكر الكرخ مني صبابةI am enraptured at the mention of al-Karkh, so ardent is my longing.
- أيا أملي هل في وفائك مطمعO my hope, is there any prospect of your keeping faith,
- أيا زاعما أني له غاير خالصO you who claim I am not sincere toward him,
- أيا قلب لا تجزع من البين واصطبرO heart, do not grieve at parting, and endure patiently.
- بحرمة هذا الشهر لما نعشتنيBy the sanctity of this month, I beg you to revive me
- بدأت بموعد ورجعت عنهYou began with a promise and went back on it.
- بعينيك ما ألقى إذا كنت حاضراWhat I endure when you are present is before your eyes,
- تخير من الإخوان من شئت واتخذChoose whom you wish from among friends, and take
- تسليت عن ذكر الحبيب بغيرهI sought solace from remembering my beloved in another,
- تمتع من حبيبك بالوداعSavor bidding your beloved farewell,
- جعلت فداك أن صلحت فداءMay I be your ransom, if a fitting ransom
- جعلت فداك قد طال اشتياقيMay I be your ransom; my yearning has lasted long.
- جعلت فداك قد طال انعطافيMay I be your ransom—long have I turned with tenderness
- جعلت فداك لم يخطر بباليMay I be your ransom; it never crossed my mind
- خليلي أغراني من الشوق والهوىMy two friends, what beguiled me with longing and passion
- دعاني الشوق والركبان قد هجدواLonging called me while the riders had fallen asleep.
- رعى الله دهرا فات لم أقض حقهMay God preserve a bygone time whose due I did not pay,
- زبالة لا هم أسقها ثم روهاZubālah—O God, water her, then quench her thirst.
- زعمت بنفسي أنت أنك مغرمYou claimed—my soul be your ransom—that you are lovesick
- سأكفيك نفسي لا كفاية غادرI shall spare you myself, not as a betrayer would,
- سقى الله أياما لنا وليالياMay God water days and nights that were ours,
- سقى الله رمل القاع في النخلاتGod watered the sands of the plain with date palms
- سقى الله رمل القاع وبلا وديمةMay God water the lowland’s sands with cloudburst and steady rain,
- علام وقد أذبت القلب شوقاWhy, when you have melted my heart with longing,
- على كبدي من خيفة البين لوعةUpon my liver lies a burning grief from fear of parting;
- فإن تكن القلوب إذن تجازيIf, then, hearts do requite love,
- فداك اخوك اليوم يوم سرورMay your brother be your ransom today, a day of joy,
- فلا تهجر أخاك بغير ذنبSo do not forsake your brother without a fault,
- قسمك عليك الدهر نصفا تعتباTime has divided you against yourself: half in reproach
- قصرت عليك النفس حتى توهمتI confined my soul to you until it supposed—
- كأن رقيبا منك يرعى خواطريAs though a watcher of yours keeps watch over my thoughts,
- كفى حزنا ألا أعاين بقعةIt is sorrow enough that I behold no spot
- كم دون أرضك من واد ومن علمHow many a valley and standard there is below your land,
- لا تلزمني في رعي الهوى سرفاDo not charge me with excess in tending love;
- لا خير في عاشق يخفى صبابتهThere is no good in a lover who conceals his yearning
- لجرمي عقاب والتجاوز ممكنThere is punishment for my offense, yet pardon is possible.
- لعمرك ما قرب الديار بنافعBy your life, the nearness of dwellings is of no use
- لقد باعدت عنك أخا شقيقاI have distanced a brother, a close one, from you
- لقد جمعت أهواي بعد شتاتهاIndeed, my once-scattered affections have been gathered
- لكل امرئ ضيف يسر بقربهEveryone has a guest whose nearness brings him joy.
- لم يكفك الهجر فأهديت ليYour estrangement did not suffice you, so you gave me—
- لو سامح الدهر أو لو ساعد العمرIf time were lenient, or if life lent its aid,
- لئن رقد الواشي سرورا بما رأىIf indeed the tale-bearer slept, pleased with what he saw,
- لئن كان الرقيب بلاء قومIf indeed the watcher is an affliction to some people,
- ما زلت أكذب فيك أرجاف العدىI never ceased denying the enemies’ rumors about you,
- ما لهم أنكروا سوادا بخديهWhat ails them, that they condemn the darkness on his cheeks,
- ما لي ألفت وجها غير ملتفتWhat ails me, that I have grown attached to a face that will not turn
- ما يعلم الله أني مذ هويتكمGod knows that since I fell in love with you,
- مباشرة النسيم لشخص الفيThe breeze's touch upon my beloved's form
- متى يا شفاء السقم سقمي منقضيWhen, O cure for sickness, will my sickness end,
- من كان يشجي بحب ما له سببWhoever is anguished by a love without a cause,
- من لي بعطف أخ خلي الإخاء وراWho can bring me the tenderness of a brother who cast friendship behind
- نصحت لكم حذارا أن تعابواI counseled you, fearing you might be reproached;
- نصيحة يوم المهرجان هديةSincere counsel on the day of Mihrjan is a gift,
- نظرت إليه نظرة مستهامI looked at him with a lovesick lover’s gaze.
- هبني أطيع ملام الكاشحين ولاSuppose I heed the reproaches of spiteful foes and do not
- هبوني أخفيت الذي بي من الهوىGrant that I concealed the love within me:
- هدية عيد قد علا فوق قدرهAn Eid gift—he has risen above his station;
- هذا مقام فتي اضاع زمانهThis is the station of a youth who squandered his time
- هممت بفرقة والموت فيهاYou contemplated parting, though death lies within it,
- والله لا نظرت عيني إليك ولاBy God, my eye has never looked upon you, nor
- وإني لأدري أن في الصبر راحةAnd I surely know that in patience there is rest;
- وأني وإن شاعت لديك سرائريAnd as for me, though my secrets have spread in your keeping,
- وتزعم للواشين أني فاسدAnd you claim to the slanderers that I am faithless
- وقائل كيف تهاجرتماSomeone asked, “How did you two become estranged?”
- وقائلة قد كان عذرك واسعاAnd a woman said, “Your excuse was ample
- وقد كان يسبي القلب في كل ليلةAnd each night the heart used to be taken captive
- وقد كنت لا أرضى من النيل بالرضاI once would not be content to gain mere approval,
- وكم ليلة قد بت أرقب صبحهاHow many nights have I spent awake awaiting their dawn,
- وكنت أرى أن قد تناهي بي الهوىAnd I thought that love had brought me
- ولما أتونا بالمطايا وقربواAnd when they came to us with the mounts and brought forward
- ولما وقفنا للوداع وبينناAnd when we stood to say farewell, between us lay
- يا أخي كم يكون هذا الجفاءMy brother, how long will this coldness last?
- يا عالما بالذي ألقى من الكربO you who know what anguish I suffer,
- يا غارس الحب بين القلب والكبدO planter of love between the heart and the liver,
- يا قلب قد خان من كلفت بهO heart, the one you are enamored of has betrayed you.
- يا مانعا مقلتي من لذة الوسنO you who deprive my eye of the delight of slumber,
- يا مت قبلك طال الحزن والأسفAh, may I die before you! Long have sorrow and grief endured.
- يا مت قبلك قد والله برح بيOh, may I die before you! By God, I have indeed been tormented
- يا من إذا صد لم أظهر له جزعاO you, when you turn away, I show you no anguish;
- يا من تجاوز حد السمع والبصرO you who have surpassed the bounds of hearing and sight,
- يا منية القلب لو آماله انفسحتO heart's desire—if only its hopes could unfold—
- يا مهديا يا سمينا حول سوسنةO you who offer jasmine around a lily,
- يعاتبني أناس في التصابيPeople reproach me for youthful dalliance,
- يعيرني الواشي بأن لست مدنفاThe slanderer taunts me for not being wasted by love,
- يقول أبعد اليأس تبكي صبابةHe says, “After despair, do you weep with longing?”
- ينسى الهوى وصفه من حل ذروتهWhoever reaches love’s summit forgets how to describe it,
