O you who deprive my eye of the delight of slumber,

May my soul shield you from misfortunes and sorrow.

By God, my soul has found rest in no haven

Except in you, nor has it yearned for any homeland.

And I will not say, even if passion wears down my liver,

In reply to your saying to me, 'You have betrayed': 'I have not betrayed.'

Grant that I am a stranger, blamed today on your account—was I not

Entitled to be aided against time?

So do not abandon your regard for what you knew

Of me with certainty, nor forsake me on suspicion.

For ever since I knew love within my liver, you have remained

Dearer, by God, to my body than my soul.
