The surges of longing insist on drawing near

To you, while reproach’s estrangement insists on keeping away.

    إذا أنا سلهت اطراحك صعبا

    A watcher from you stands over me, alone with my heart;

Whenever I made casting you aside easy, he made it hard.

So here I am, devoted to him, tried and tested:

Whenever a mount failed me, I sought another mount.

My turning away from you was not a turning away out of weariness,

Nor was my turning toward you a pursuit of delight.

Nor was that reproach anything but sincere counsel,

Nor that lowering of the eyes anything but apprehensive awe.

Nor was estrangement anything but excessive favor, nor contentment

Without cause anything but tormenting longing.

And whoever is denied sweet, clear water and abstains

From drinking what dogs have left, out of indignation,

Is likely, if he cannot drink anything else

And fears death, to submit and drink.

If a man is not allotted what he desires,

He desires what is decreed for him, whether he wishes it or refuses.
