ياAh! متmay I die قبلكbefore you طالhas lasted long الحزنsorrow والأسفand grief
وجاوزand went beyond الشوقlonging بيwith me حدthe limit of الذيwhat أصفI describe
Ah, may I die before you! Long have sorrow and grief endured.
O one who died before me, sorrow and regret have been prolonged
And longing has carried me beyond the bounds of what I can describe.
And yearning has exceeded in me the limit I can describe
قلبيmy heart إليكtoward you معdespite الهجرانestrangement منعطفinclining
وأنتand you عنيaway from me رخيat ease البالmind منحرفturned away
My heart turns toward you despite estrangement.
My heart toward you is inclined despite separation
And you, carefree, turn away from me.
While you from me, relaxed, are turning away
فإنso if تكنyou are عنfrom إخائيmy friendship اليومtoday منصرفاًturning away
فاللَهthen God يعلمknows ماnot ليfor me عنكaway from you منصرفa way to turn away
If today you turn away from my friendship,
So if today you are diverted from brotherhood with me
Then God knows I have no way to turn away from you.
Then Allah knows I have no diversion from you
هبنيsuppose that I اعترفتadmitted بأنيthat I لستam not ذاpossessed of شغفٍpassionate love
ألمdid ... not? يكنbe كمديmy anguish أنthat لستI am not أنتصفobtaining redress
Suppose I admitted that I am not passionately in love—
Give me, I admitted I have no passion
Was my anguish not that I received no redress?
Did it not suffice that you are not avenged?
كمhow often قدindeed كذبتI lied علىabout قلبيmy heart فكذبنيthen belied me
طولthe persistence of الحنينyearning وعينٌand an eye دمعهاits tears يكفdrip
How often I have lied about my heart, only to be belied
How much I lied to my heart so it lied to me
By enduring yearning and an eye whose tears fall.
The prolonged yearning and a tearful eye
إنif كنتyou would be يوماًever مقيليpardoning me زلةًa lapse سلفتthat has passed
فالآنthen now منfrom قبلbefore أنthat يغرىis incited بيagainst me التلفdestruction
If ever you would pardon me a past lapse,
If one day I made a mistake that preceded me
Then do so now, before destruction is set upon me.
Then now before ruin makes me perish
اللَهGod! اللَهGod! فيconcerning نفسيmy soul فقدfor indeed عطبتit has come to ruin
وليسand there is no فيin قيلهاits words منof شكرهاits gratitude خلفbreach of promise
For God's sake, for God's sake, spare my soul, for it is ruined.
Oh Allah, oh Allah, my soul is impaired
Nor will its words of gratitude prove false.
And no gratitude remains behind
قدindeed ذللhas humbled الشوقlonging قلبيmy heart فهوso it معترفٌacknowledges
أنthat التذللself-abasement فيunder حكمthe rule of الهوىlove شرفhonor
Longing has humbled my heart, and it admits
Yearning has subjugated my heart so it admits
That self-abasement under love's rule is honor.
That humility in the ruling of love is honor

So act as you see fit; I will not call you a wrongdoer,
So act as you see fit, I do not call you aggressively
Nor call anything you have said excessive.
Nor say to a thing you said is excessive
