You claimed—my soul be your ransom—that you are lovesick

with thoughts of me, and that I shun union with you.

Look again at what you claimed, and do not turn aside,

so you may know which of us is wretched and tormented:

Is it he who falsely accuses, then denies the wrong he did

to his beloved, or he who confesses and makes amends?

Were you repaid with what is our due,

you would be angry; but I flee estrangement.

    So I close my eyes upon ghada's embers, fearing hatred;

and were it not for love, no escape would be barred to me.

How long, then, must I go on, longing for reconciliation,

believing one in whose eyes my truth is a lie?

And I have no offense against you that you can count

against me, save that I have no way to leave you.
