رضايmy contentment بأنwith the fact that تحياyou live سليماًin good health وأسقماand I fall ill
When what I endure grows severe, my affliction is eased
When hardship befalls me, I hope you live healthy while I'm ill,
by my contentment that you live in health while I fall ill.
For you who dispels my fears with your loyalty to our pact, without whom I'd not be lovesick,
فياso O منthe one whose يزيلremoves الخوفthe fear عنيfrom me وفاؤهhis faithfulness
بعهديto my pledge ومنand the one who لولاهwere it not for him لمnot أمسI became مغرماlove-stricken
O you whose faithfulness banishes fear from me,
Would it be fair if you saw me neglected,
by honoring my pledge—and without whom I would never have become love-stricken.
Yet kept silent about my affairs and wishes out of resentment?
أكانwas it? جميلاًseemly أنthat ترانيyou see me مهملاًneglected
وتسكتand you remain silent عنabout أمريmy command ونهييand my prohibition تبرماout of vexation
Was it seemly for you to see me neglected,
I shall race to honor you or disgrace you,
and remain silent about my commands and prohibitions, out of vexation?
And it suffices you as nobility to dishonor and honor.
سأرعاكI shall cherish you أنif أكرمتنيyou honor me أوor أهنتنيyou humiliate me
وحسبكand enough for you نبلاًnobility أنthat تهينyou humiliate وتكرماand you are honored
I shall cherish you, whether you honor or humiliate me;
I'm ashamed before God to see an oppressor of those close to me, or see myself oppressed.
and it is nobility enough for you to humiliate and be honored.
I shall take my right from myself for your sake,
وأنيand indeed I لأستحييI surely feel ashamed منbefore اللَهGod أنto أرىbe seen
ظلوماًdeeply unjust لألفيto my beloved أوor أرىI am seen متظلماcomplaining of injustice
And I would indeed be ashamed before God to be seen
And pardon you if you don't keep our pact out of nobility.
deeply unjust to my beloved, or to be seen complaining of injustice.
It's not only myself I care for, but also to protect my friend from tyranny and injustice.
سآخذI shall take منfrom نفسيmyself لنفسكfor your soul حقهاits due
وأصفحand I pardon أنif لمnot ترعyou keep عهديmy pledge تكرماout of generosity
I shall exact from myself the due owed to your soul,
If told to choose between attaining you or your rectitude,
and graciously pardon you if you fail to keep my pledge.
I'd prefer you disobey my passions and remain secure.
وماand not بيof concern to me نفسيmyself وحدهاit alone غيرexcept أننيthat I
أصونI protect خليليmy beloved أنlest يجورhe acts unjustly ويظلماand he does wrong
I am not concerned for myself alone; rather, I
You were more deserving of me than yearning and desire,
shield my beloved from acting unjustly and doing wrong.
And you were the most fulfilled in my conscience.
ولوand if قيلit were said ليto me اخترchoose نيلهattaining him أوor صلاحهhis righteousness
لآثرتI would prefer أنthat يعصىbe defied هوايmy desire ويسلماand he remain unharmed
If I were told, 'Choose: winning him or his righteousness,'
So why have I distanced myself as if I'm a foe,
I would prefer my desire to be defied and him to remain unharmed.
When I was the most beloved and brought near?
وقدand indeed كنتyou were أولىmore entitled بيto me منthan الشوقlonging والهوىand passion
وقدand indeed كنتI was أمضيI move onward فيwithin الضميرthe heart متمماmaking complete
And you once had a greater claim to me than longing and passion;
and I once moved within the heart, making it whole.
فماso what ليis with me قدindeed أبعدتI was banished حتىto the point that كأننيas though I
عدوٌّan enemy وقدthough indeed كنتI was الحبيبthe beloved المقدماfavored
Why, then, have I been cast so far away that I seem
an enemy, though I was once the favored beloved?
