إذا ازداد رعياً للهوى زدته هوىً

إذا ازداد رعياً للهوى زدته هوىً

وضني به مقدار هذين يضعف

وضني به مقدار هذين يضعف

If he grows more attentive to love, I give him more love.

If passion for love grows, I only add more

And my jealous attachment to him doubles in proportion to these two.

And think it will double with these two

قفوه فأني زائدٌ في تخوفي

قفوه فأني زائدٌ في تخوفي

ولا حظ ل في أن يزول التخوف

ولا حظ ل في أن يزول التخوف

Stop him, for my fear is increasing.

Stop it, for I have too much fear

And I have no share in fear's passing away.

And no fortune in fear leaving me

فلا يتشاغل عاذلٌ بنصيحتي

فلا يتشاغل عاذلٌ بنصيحتي

فمثلي على إرشاده لا يوقف

فمثلي على إرشاده لا يوقف

So let no reproacher busy himself with advising me.

So no reproacher occupies advising me

For one like me cannot be made to heed his guidance.

For I do not pause for their guidance

ولا يرث لي في ذلتي وتواضعي

ولا يرث لي في ذلتي وتواضعي

بهذا الذل أزهى وأشرف

بهذا الذل أزهى وأشرف

Nor let him pity me in my abasement and humility.

And I inherit no lowliness and humbleness from my misery

Through this abasement I am prouder and nobler.

With this misery I become more radiant and noble
