And when we stood to say farewell, between us lay

words whose number would exhaust those who count,

my tears rushed forth; I turned, weighed down

by tenderness for you, to hold my weeping back.

My eyes resembled nothing but a cloud

whose rain drew near, and whose thunderclaps hurried it on.

Thunder’s rebuke kept urging its clouds onward,

so they appeared, while the north winds turned them aside.

It did not clear until it wept; then laughed

the hillside meadows, and their stems grew green with grass.

And can a woman wearing a necklace recover her pearls

when her choicest pearl slips free from those strings?

Then my companion said, “Why has your complexion changed,

and why does your eyes’ downpour not pass your lids?”

    وخير قلوب العاشقين بليدها

    So I held back from answering, in dull bewilderment;

and the best of lovers’ hearts is the dullest.
