أبى لي الوفاء دوام الجفا

وحل الحنين عديم العزا

Loyalty would not let me prolong estrangement,

The promise of loyalty has refused me constancy,

And longing settled in, without solace.

And yearning without solace has occupied me.

قعدت إلى الوصل مستعطفاً

قعدت إلى الوصل مستعطفاً

وقد كنت قبل شديد الأبا

وقد كنت قبل شديد الأبا

I sat seeking reunion, pleading for affection,

I sat requesting union,

Though before I had been adamant in refusal.

When before I had been most aloof.

وأني لفي طول كتم الهوى

وأني لفي طول كتم الهوى

وستريه عنك بفرط الجفا

وستريه عنك بفرط الجفا

And I, in my long concealment of love,

Yet I conceal the passion of love,

And my hiding it from you through excessive coldness,

And from you I hide it, so great is my estrangement.

كمن ينفخ البوق مستخفياً

كمن ينفخ البوق مستخفياً

ويضرب بالطبل تحت الكسا

ويضرب بالطبل تحت الكسا

Am like one who blows a trumpet in secret,

Like one who blows the trumpet in secret,

And beats a drum beneath a cloak.

And beats the drums beneath his cloak.

فيا قلب ويحك كن حازماً

فيا قلب ويحك كن حازماً

إذا تاه رام سبيل النجا

إذا تاه رام سبيل النجا

So, O heart, woe to you! Be discerning—

So O my heart, be resolute,

One who, when lost, seeks the path to deliverance.

If you wish to attain deliverance when lost.

ولا تك ذا عزمةٍ جاهلاً

ولا تك ذا عزمةٍ جاهلاً

إذا ما اعتدى لج في الاعتدا

إذا ما اعتدى لج في الاعتدا

And do not be a resolute fool,

And be not foolishly weak-willed,

Who, when he transgresses, persists in transgression.

If hostility transgresses against you.

فسل الحقود برعي العهود

فسل الحقود برعي العهود

وداو الجفاء برعي الوفا

وداو الجفاء برعي الوفا

So dispel grudges by honoring pledges,

Ask the hostile one to keep faith,

And heal estrangement by keeping faith.

And cure estrangement by keeping loyalties.

فأوجع من حمل عتب الصفا

فأوجع من حمل عتب الصفا

زوال الصفاء وقطع الإخا

زوال الصفاء وقطع الإخا

For more painful than bearing affection's reproach

For more painful than bearing the reproach of reconciliation,

Is the loss of affection and the severing of brotherhood.

Is the loss of affection and severing of ties.

فسامع هواك وكن مدنفاً

فسامع هواك وكن مدنفاً

أحب الدواء لحب الشفا

أحب الدواء لحب الشفا

So heed your passion, and be one stricken by sickness,

So listen to your love, and be gentle,

Who loves the remedy for love of healing.

For gentleness is the best cure for love.
