O you, when you turn away, I show you no anguish;
O you, if you turn away, I do not show distress,
do not think I bear estrangement with fortitude.
Do not think me enduring of estrangement and stoic.

Nothing keeps the surging waves of tears from flowing
What prevents tears from flowing down my cheeks,
except the gloating of one who has been envious.
Is only the gloating of one full of envy.

The outpouring of tears—even if their first gushes have run their course—
The outpouring of tears, though its causes persist,
is more healing for one who has grappled with affliction than pent-up grief.
Is most healing for one who suffers misfortune silently.
