فلما حوى قلبي براه ببخله
To God I complain of him who first approached me with his affection.
To Allah I complain of the cruelty of my beloved
Then, when he possessed my heart, he wore it away with his stinginess.
For when she took possession of my heart, she dealt with it stingily

I shall recompense myself for forgoing demands on him, content,
I will restrain my soul from reproaching her, being content

Until I see her become angry after her act

And I shall take what he freely gives, so long as he remains miserly,
And I will beg her pardon as long as she is stingy
and forbid my tongue to return to reproaching him.
And I will silence my tongue from returning to blame her

For many an apology has made me wish that I
For many a time I have wished that I was mute
had fallen mute, and had never been addressed with its like.
And had not addressed her with the like of this speech
