May I be your ransom—long have I turned with tenderness

Toward you, though you are hard-hearted and aloof.

And he who cares for you unwillingly is not your brother,

Nor is one who first seeks your closeness like one who merely reciprocates.

    وإن لا ترع يوحشك انصرافي

    If you safeguard the trust, I will not squander it;

And if you do not, my departure will leave you lonely.

It will take you long to find a friend

For whom the days of mutual affection stretch long,

For fear that his company might weary you,

And so he is content with just enough of your bounty.

But if this withdrawal is withdrawal born of reproach,

While you remain true to affection and mutual fidelity,

Then come to my rescue before despair

Begets something too grave to mend.

Otherwise, cast aside my love, but act graciously,

With a hint sufficient in place of an outright declaration.

When will the sick one reach recovery,

If wasting sickness is what the healer achieves?
