فإن تكن القلوب إذن تجازي

and I follow a straight path in love,

And I were to follow the right path in love

فما لي أهون الثقلين جمعاً

عليك وأنت أكرمهم عليا

why am I the least esteemed of all humankind and jinn

Why should I find the two burdens lighter

to you, while you are the dearest of them to me?

When you are the noblest of the exalted?

عمرت سنين أستحفي التصافي

عمرت سنين أستحفي التصافي

ولا أرضى من الوصل الرضيا

ولا أرضى من الوصل الرضيا

I lived for years, earnestly seeking mutual affection,

I have lived years seeking sincerity

nor was I content with the pleasing kind of union.

But I am not pleased with gratifying union

فلم تقلع صروف الدهر حتى

فلم تقلع صروف الدهر حتى

حبست عن أن أجي أو أن أحيا

حبست عن أن أجي أو أن أحيا

Yet time's vicissitudes did not relent until

The turns of fate did not cease

I was kept from coming or from living.

Until I was hindered from coming or living

تبغض ما استعطت وعش سليماً

تبغض ما استعطت وعش سليماً

فأنت أحب مخلوقٍ إليا

فأنت أحب مخلوقٍ إليا

Make yourself hateful as much as you can, and live unharmed,

Hate what I have begged and live in peace

for you are the creature dearest to me.

For you are the most beloved creature to me
