As though a watcher of yours keeps watch over my thoughts,

And another watches my gaze and my tongue.

So my eyes have seen no sight in your absence

That displeases you without my saying, "The two have watched me."

Nor has a jest escaped my mouth in your absence

To anyone but you without my saying, "The two have heard me."

Nor has a thought of anyone but you crossed

My heart without the two reining me in.

When the rest distract themselves from love

By drinking wine or listening to singing slave-girls,

I find that what consoled others makes me yearn

To be near you, until I weary of where I am.

And true-hearted young men—I have tired of meeting them,

And have withheld my gaze and my tongue from them.

It is not renunciation that has turned me from them, but that I

See you in every direction, watching me.
